Reflective Practice Guidance Logs - Semester Two

The document describes a reflective practice guidance log entry involving an incident at a water table. Part 1 provides an objective observation of the incident where J took a toy cup from L, causing L to cry. Part 2 identifies the chosen guidance strategy of redirection by offering J a similar toy. Part 3 discusses the action taken, with J initially refusing the new toy but then playing with it after the teacher's encouragement. Part 4 reflects on keeping more toys available to avoid arguments and providing more supervision at the water table.

Reflective Practice Guidance Logs

Part 1 Objective Observation

(Clearly identify the problem. Examine the context of the problem.)

Date of Observation: February 25 2!1"#

_______________________________________________________________

The children put on their aprons in order to play at the water table. There were several (about four) baby dolls in the water as well as assorted cups, scoops and sponges. The children were encouraged to bathe the babies. There were five children playing in the water, as that was the number of aprons that were available. The children were smiling, splashing in the water and using the cups, scoops and sponges to pour water onto the baby dolls. L was playing with a cup when J reached for it, ta ing it out of L!s hands. L began to cry and reach to ta e the cup bac . J pulled his hand toward himself and tightened his grip on the toy cup. L continued to cry and J was frowning. "oth J and L continued to hold tight to the toy, neither one letting go.

Part 2 Decision
(Clearly identify the guidance strategy chosen and why the chosen strategy is appropriate for this child / situation.)

The strategy # used was $edirection (%ivert & %istract). This strategy was the most appropriate for this situation because the water table offered many similar'type toys so it was relatively easy to redirect J!s interest to another toy, rather than trying to ta e the toy L was playing with.

(n adult can be most helpful by immediately doing something to distract the child from the forbidden activity and steering her toward a different activity. ()uidance of *oung +hildren, page ,--).

Part " $ction

(Clearly discuss your actions, the child s response and the results of the guidance strategy.)

.y (ctions / # redirected J by offering him a toy that was similar to the toy L was playing with. # also told J that he would be able to play with the toy L had once L was finished with it.

+hild!s $esponse / J initially re0ected the measuring scoop # was offering him, but when # showed him how he could use it to bathe the baby that was in the water table, he too the measuring scoop, filled it with water, and began to pour water over the baby doll.

$esults / J and L both ended up parallel playing in the water table without further incident. The guidance strategy was successful and the children played together cooperatively.

Part % Reflection
