Teacher Study Guide

Preface I designed this 8-week curricular plan around the hourglass rehearsal concept. I expected that the class would meet 5 times a week for 5o minutes a day. Throughout the beginning is a plethora of time for students to learn through research, experience, and performance. The front end of the plan is full of critical thinking lessons that require prior knowledge of terminology. Because of this, I would suggest this concert program to be the final of your year. It is a difficult program, but with the right preparation throughout the year, it is very possible Get ready to work! Week 1 During this week students are listening to recordings of the pieces, researching the background of the composer and piece. Please see weekly lesson plan for details on required materials (which are all provided in this packet) Week 2 During this part of the rehearsal sequence we are starting to break down the theory of the pieces. Be sure to make yourself familiar with common rhythms of each piece (within each piece) and identify chord progressions (particularly in the Copland) At the end of this week students are asked to write a short essay about a topic of their choosing that will help the classs knowledge of the pieces and styles. Feel free to narrow down their topics. Week 3 Students will be asked to discuss their research papers that they finished over the weekend. This may be a practice you decide to stretch out over a couple of days. In the lesson plan I have listed some trouble areas I predict will need to be addressed at this point. Week 4 We are starting to get away from written assignments and focusing more on the

playing aspect of the course. I have planned for many sectional days followed by full ensemble days in alternating order. I suggest having your technicians come in to help. If you do not have those resources, then have your principal players whom you trust to run their instruments sectional Week 5 Continuation of week 4... This is the time of the preparation period to get picky and single problems out. Be sure to record lessons so that you and the students can listen for areas to improve. Week 6 We are beginning to put the puzzle back together now. At this point it is difficult to plan for what problems you will run into, so be flexible and use your musicianship to find solutions to issues. Week 7+8 Polish and Clean
