Students that have taken MUET are eligible to be enrolled into degree courses offered at local public
universities as long as their CGPA for Diploma STPM or Malaysian Matriculation examinations are good
enough to fulfil the entry requirement. The difference between all these bands is that students from band
1 and 2 have to take two extra English courses during holidays while band 3 and 4 students take one extra
course. Students with band 5 or 6 can skip the extra English course. Some competitive degree courses like
medicine and pharmacy, however, require students to get band 5 or 6 in MUET.
Feeling inferior

IM STUDYING in university and currently living with my parents. Since I was
young, I was aware that I have an inferiority complex.
I feel that everyone is always better than me and looking down on me. During
primary school and to some extent, my secondary school years as well, I came to
terms with the fact that Im not the handsome, athletic kind. Im not particularly
smart, funny, popular or rich.
But I was fine with that since I have a tight group of friends and I didnt suffer from
an inferiority complex that much.
Now that Im in university, Im beginning to feel inferior again, and at first, I blamed
it on being too attached to my high school friends. But for the last few years, Ive
been feeling inferior even when Im mingling with the same group of close friends.
They have incredible fun pictures in their Facebook pages with their new friends,
they are in relationships, go clubbing and out of town regularly. Some are into
modelling, while others are working overseas my life seems so dull and
depressing in comparison.
My Facebook and Twitter profile have been absent from updates, and Im not part
of any clubs or societies. Ive never been in a relationship. I feel like everyone is
growing up and Im still stuck with the memories of my high school days. I know this
is a petty thing to worry about, but it really affects my self-esteem and grades.
What Im hoping for is a wake-up call and a guide on how to live my life out without
going along this train of thought. Thanks for listening.
Worry
The leap from school to college or university is not as easy as it seems. All of a
sudden, you have to fit in again. And there are also expectations to be met your
own, your parents and friends. Its not surprising that many people find it to be a
difficult period.
When faced with change, its normal to want to hold on to the past when things
were familiar and safe.
The best way to deal with change is to, well, change along with it. Change is
inevitable and you have to go with the flow.
It seems that your biggest enemy is your self-doubt. I dont know who convinced
you that you are not good-looking or athletic, but you seem to have taken this on as
some kind of punishment. Not all of us are blessed with all these attributes. But, we
make the best of what we have. So, you are not athletic. There are other sports or
activities you can still participate in. So what if youre not good-looking, whatever
that means. You can still play up your best features and look good. Not all of us can
crack a joke but we still find ways to be happy. And, you dont have to be rich to
have fun or enjoy yourself.
Make friends, of the same sex, of the opposite sex, and join clubs and activities. If
you dont have any hobbies, or dont know what you like, join a few to see which
ones suit you best. You have to make an effort.
If you dont like yourself, chances are others wont either. Chances are you have
changed from the person you were before this. Either you have not noticed this, or
you have not given yourself the chance to let the change show.
Unless you start being proactive, youre going to find everyone around you moving
ahead and you will still be stuck where you were. Life doesnt just happen to you.
You make it happen. Youre the only one who can fill up your social calendar. You
cannot rely on someone else to make changes in your life. The only wake up call
you are going to get is the one you give yourself.

Facing anxiety over changes in life
Email
Facebook

IM 19 years old and currently doing my STPM. Pursuing this wasnt my choice but
it was the only option I had, due to financial constraints.
My mum is a single parent. She cant afford to send me to a private college. I do
appreciate everything she is doing for me and understand her situation well.
Since STPM is now semester based, lessons are taught in haste and Im having
difficulty in coping with the lessons. I was quite a good student academically in my
lower forms. My class is full of excellent students who make me feel inferior and it
doesnt help that I keep failing my papers.
My friends do help me out but its embarrassing to continuously ask for help.
Friends who used to score less than me are getting As in their foundation studies
while Im getting Fs. I also hold a high position in the school Prefectorial Board. I
wish to be an example to my younger prefects.
Besides having trouble with studies, I have no proper transport to school, which
causes me to be late. Being late is a major offence for a prefect, thus we have to
pay fines and get demerit marks. How am I supposed to be an example to my
fellow prefects when Im having so many problems? Its embarrassing.
My ambition is to become a pharmacist. However, I dont think I will be able to
pursue this given my results. I dont want to end up in a career that has a lower
status than my circle of friends. I often get headaches thinking about all this.
Sometimes, I cant help but wonder, maybe if my father was still around, I might
have been able to follow a smoother path and achieve my ambition.
Now, I have to search for an alternative course. Im so afraid of making the wrong
choice. Once I decide on a course to pursue, theres no turning back.
All my close friends are leaving Form Six. The loneliness creeps in and I feel even
more depressed because Im not close to other students. Theres no one to pour
out my heart to. Besides, everyone has their own best friends. I would just be
intruding. My mother and brother are too busy with their own problems. They dont
have time to listen to me. Even if they do, they wouldnt understand what Im going
through.
Like any other parent, her advice is to take this matter lightly. School is the last
place I want to be. Yet, I have to go there and go through the routines every single
day. I get more depressed and agitated by the day.
This feeling of anxiety has caused my skin to break out. Skin problems is making
my self-esteem and confidence drop even lower. I need help to keep myself calm
and strengthen my confidence, and focus on my studies. This depression mode is
killing me. Please help.
Em
Yes, your life would most likely have been different if your father was around. That
is because the job opportunities available to a man like him would have been
different from the ones available to your mother a single mother who has to juggle
her time between work and family. Also, if your father was around, there could have
been a chance for your family to be more financially independent as there would be
two people earning income.
But, it is never helpful to think about what could have been. It is better to focus on
what is. Your mother is working hard to raise you and your brother alone. With that
comes some sacrifices on her part and also yours. Perhaps you may not have
many choices for your education. But, there are other things you can decide on.
You can choose to focus on the parts of your life that are not going as you wish. Or,
the parts of your life which are going well. You are obviously an intelligent and
capable young person. You can choose to capitalise on that and use that to your
benefit. Focus on your studies. Form study groups if you find lessons difficult to
keep up with. If you feel that way, surely others must feel the same way too.
Make new friends. So what if they already have their cliques? You are a special
and unique person whose friendship they will surely appreciate. Also, just because
your friends are leaving, it doesnt mean the relationship has to end. It just
progresses into a new one where each of you has different experiences. Think
about how much more fun conversations will be when you are having completely
different experiences.
You have problems with transport to school in the mornings. So, what have you
done about it? Have you asked around for a ride to school? Does someone in your
school live nearby and can help pick you up on the way? If not, arrange for a
regular taxi or schoolbus to take you. Contracting them long term will surely allow
you to compromise at a discounted price.
There is no shame, absolutely none, in asking for help. Stop feeling that way. It
takes far more strength to ask for help, and be open to receive it, than to want to do
everything on your own. Your friends are obliging. That means they dont mind
helping out.
Finally, you have to stop making unrealistic expectations of yourself. Nobody is
perfect. Accept these things about yourself and work to better it.
If you hate school so much, have you thought of an alternative plan? Are you ready
to quit school to find a job where you can save money for the kind of education you
want? Many people are now going back to university in their adult years. There is
no shame in that, either.
Remember, life is about change which is inevitable. We all make plans for the
future and later find that the road there isnt as smooth as we hoped it would be.
You have to learn to roll with the punches. Your dreams and ambitions will surely
be attainable.
