1. Front Matter
This section provides introductory information on the Internet Resource Guide for Computer
Engineering majors. The front matter consists of subsections that describe the content, the
purpose and the audience this guide is designed for. Moreover, there are tips and hints of using
it that will help better understand each section.

1.A The Guide Content
Resources represented in this guide will be helpful for students pursuing undergraduate degree
in Computer Engineering and people interested in this field. There are links to web sites in the
Guide which are more like databases with references to much more resources. Furthermore, a
professional journal is provided that publishes the most recent articles on the field of Electrical
and Computer Engineering. One can find the list of textbooks, tutorials and lectures that might
be useful in his/her research.

1.B Audience and Purpose of the Guide
This Internet Resource Guide is designed for current or perspective undergraduate students at
Pennsylvania State University majoring in Computer Engineering. Also, it can be useful for
students who are seeking for extra references and deciding on specific research topics.

1.C Assumptions
It is assumed that students who are more or less familiar with the field and have taken some
classes related to a major will use this document. On the other hand, those thinking to apply to
Computer Engineering undergraduate degree can also use it since some of the sites suggest
tutorials and lectures that might be helpful to get to know about the field. However, the user of
the guide must have some basic knowledge of computer engineering and what skills one needs
to major in it.

1.D The Guide Organization
The main part of the Guide divided into three logical sections. The first one contains abstracts
on databases related to Computer Engineering field and tips on how to use these databases
intelligently. Second part is followed by Professional Sources that includes Statistical Abstract
of the United States, Catalog of US Governmental Publications and the journal Advanced in
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ACEE). Here you can find economic conditions,
important publications and salary figures offered to job seeking professionals according to
fields of study and degrees, such as bachelors, masters and doctors. Finally the last sections are
websites that provides useful information relevant to the Computer Engineering field. . If you
are a freshman student or a perspective one, it is better to begin with this section to get more
familiar with the field.

1.E Using Tips and Hints
There are some tips and hints of using the Guide that will help you to get most of it and to apply
information more productively. First of all, study the table of content to know what kind of
resources I offer. Also, it will help you to navigate through the content of the document.
Second, before going to a web site, read the abstract to be familiar with it and to know what
kind of materials you should expect. Finally, look through tips that I provide for each section.
They will help you to utilize the resource as much as possible.

Engineering Village is the huge online source database for computer science and engineering
audience where you can find all recently added information. This database has a good search
panel that allows user easily find answers to his questions from the simple to the complex.
Engineering Village connects with multiple engineering literature databases and it mostly
consist of Scholarly journals, trade publications, patents, government reports, reference books
and etc. The search menu is done very convenient for every user. For example, it has quick
search option where it is can be selected right database and refine results section for the
more precise research. If there is a trouble to find anything, there is assistance of librarians and
engineers trough Ask an Expert section. Moreover Engineering Village database stays up to
date, because latest records are added every single week.

Tips

Abstract
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics engineers) Xplore is the largest professional
association for the advancement of technology in the world. It has more than 3 million in its
library and publishes 148 transactions, journals and magazines in electrical and computer
engineering fields. This database also produces third of worlds technical literature,
monographs, guides and textbooks. All content of IEEE since 1950 is available in digital format.
It has good design along with convenient search tool panel with different options and filters.
For example, typing in the key word in search panel, user can narrow down his research by year
of publication, author, country, location and etc. That is why IEEExplore is a good source for
students majoring computer engineering or for those who are connected to this field.

Tips

Abstract
The Statistical Abstract of the US publishes the economic, social conditions in the United States
described by statistics since 1878. Following the link above, there is a table 302 which describes the
salary that employees offered to candidates for degrees between the years 2005 2012. The names of
fields of study are in the most left part of table. The table is divided as Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral
by three sections and each section has three columns sorted by the years 2005, 2011 and 2012. There
are amount of salary in dollars is written next to each field and under appropriate sections. Because this
is a guide mostly for computer engineers, the main information to be noticed is the salary offers for
computer engineers. It is obviously seen that the salary offers to computer engineer candidates are the
biggest in all degrees in each year except Doctoral management in 2011. The source for building this
table was National Association of College and Employers that was established in 1956 and its leading
source of information in tracking starting salaries, outcomes and etc.

Tips
1. Go to http://www.libraries.psu.edu/psul/home.html (Penn States library home page), then
choose Databases from A to Z under research section.
2. Find Statistical Abstract of US
3. Choose section 12 (Labor Force, Employment and Earnings) and type in
computer engineering in the search tab.
4. 23 tables will be found and the sixs one will be table 302.

stays up to date since July 1976. There are bunch of search options that are can be narrowed
down by maps, congressional or internet publications.
I choose the publication named as Entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley during the Boom and
Bust by Robert Fairlie, University of California. In this publication Robert Fairlie tried to
understand how the labor market in high- tech industry impacts the labor market and its effects
on entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley during the boom and bust. He found out that rates of
entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley during expansion period are higher than in the rest of United
States.
