Professional Development Plan
Step I: Self-reflection
I think that reading is immeasurably important and I believe that I am a good reading
teacher. Almost all of my students are reading at or above grade level. Although most
of my students are doing well in reading, I feel that I do not meet the needs of a few of
my students. Based on this, I feel that I need to differentiate for those students by
implementing an RtI system. Historically I have relied too heavily on the reading
specialist to get them up to grade level. Although the reading specialist has helped
with her interventions, she is only allotted a minimal amount of time with these
students per week. To improve student learning, I believe I need to be working with
the reading specialist more closely and together we should implement an RtI program
in the classroom.

Step II A. Description of School and Teaching,
Administrative, or Pupil Services Situation
Description of Position:
I am currently a first grade teacher at Belleville Elementary School.
Number of Years in Position:
1 year
School Location/Setting:
The School District of Belleville (SDB), established in 1862, is a small rural district
located in south-central Wisconsin. Belleville's current population is 2089. The school
district's present teaching staff of 76 and support staff of 37 serve 930 students in pre-
kindergarten through twelfth grade in four schools located in the Village of
Belleville.
Demographics:
Belleville Elementary houses Pk-1st grade students. Belleville Elementary consists of
162 students. Race and ethnicity is broken up in the following categories: Alaska
Native 0.6%, Asian or Pacific Islander 2.5%, Black not Hispanic 0.6%, Hispanic
4.9%, and White not Hispanic 91.4%. 16.7% of the students enrolled have a
disability. 22.2% of the students are economically disadvantaged. 2.5% of the
students are limited english proficient.
District Goals:
The following are Belleville District goals in the 2012-2013 school year:
Raise reading achievement
Raise mathematic achievement
Close the reading and mathematic achievement gap

Step II B. Description of Goal to be Addressed
Goal:
I will attend a workshop/seminar on RtI (response to intervention) so that I can obtain
new tools to help improve student learning.

Step II C. Rationale for the Goal: Links to Professional
Situation and Wisconsin Educator Standards
Goal:
I will attend a workshop/seminar on RtI (response to intervention) so that I can obtain
new tools to help improve student learning.
Rationale for the Goal and Link to Educational Situation:
Belleville elementary listed reading achievement as one of the goals for the 2012-
2013 school years. Although I have seen a lot of success in reading in my classroom, I
would like to implement RtI to reach the at risk students that I have and to close the
achievement gap.
Although many of my students in my classroom are at or above reading level, there
are a few students that may not be having their needs met when it comes to reading
instruction. I plan to attend a workshop/seminar on RtIso that I can better learn how to
implement it my classroom. RtI benefits struggling students in the regular classroom
by requiring early intervention of additional academic and behavioral support. I
believe that implementing an RtI program and also utilizing the reading specialist will
help to improve student learning.
Licensure standard(s) addressed in your plan:
Teacher :(2) The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and
provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social and personal development.
Teacher:(3) The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning
and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs
of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
Teacher:(9) The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effect
of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning
community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
Teacher:(10) The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents and
agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and wellbeing and who acts
with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.

Step II D. Plan for Assessing and Documenting the Goal
Goal:
I will attend a workshop/seminar on RtI (response to intervention) so that I can obtain
new tools to help improve student learning.
I will assess my professional growth through:
Documenting and recording each intervention and how successful it was.
Have the reading specialist sit in on an intervention to share his/her thoughts.
Review and reference notes from the RtI workshop/seminar
I will assess my students' progress through:
Pre assessing and post assessing my students.
