Castoro Cellars Exhibits Artist Kristopher Doe

Each month, the art gallery at Castoro Cellars Winery Tasting Room in Templeton exhibits
artwork from local artists.
In November, Castoro will be showing the work of local artist Kristopher Doe, a transplant from
the Los Angeles area. It will be his first local show.
Doe was raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena where its tall, sun-splashed palm and
camphor-tree-lined streets contrasted against the backdrop of the grand San Gabriel mountains.
“Though I was raised in an urban environment, the commanding presence of nature has firmly held
my attention since I was a child and has served as my primary inspiration in my adult life as I work
to capture the differing characteristics of our natural environment in its many rich and diverse forms
and faces.”
A graduate of Art Center College of Design, Mr. Doe’s career as an illustrator, designer and painter
has spanned twenty years, in addition to fifteen years teaching drawing, design and painting courses
at community and private art colleges throughout southern and central California.
Castoro Cellars Winery Tasting Room is located at 1315 N. Bethel Rd in Templeton. For more
information on the artist's exhibit or the reception, they can be reached at 805-238-0725.

temperature, without the need for mechanical cooling or heating. When
visiting, there is a small window that looks into the straw bale construc-
tion so wine tasters can educated themselves in architecture as well.
By all accounts Claiborne & Churchill has carved out a well
respected niche of unusual wines and they are seeing a resurgence of
consumers turning toward these wines. “I don’t know of any one thing
that accounts for consumers having a more accepting attitude toward
Riesling,” Clay ponders, “but it’s probably a combination of factors.
There’s a growing boredom with Chardonnay, a larger wine-drinking
demographic, including drinkers who never learned that it wasn’t “cool”
to drink Riesling, and better examples of California Rieslings,” he says.
They specifically purchase grapes rather than running their own
vineyard simply because they are not dependent on a single crop. Wine-
making is farming after all, and Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate
with seasonal changes. Additionally, they can focus more on the wine-
making and marketing of their wines, rather than worry about frost
damage, excessive heat or intrusive pests. “It’s about relationships,” Clay
says of the various vineyards he works with. “We seek out growers who
share the same values as we do, and we develop and maintain a close
relationship with them. It’s really a community effort,”
That is evidenced in the Riesling and Gewürztraminer Clay has been
purchasing from the same vineyards since 1988. “We don’t tell them
how to grow the grapes, but they know what we like and we know they
will deliver it.” That kind of relationship and trust extends into the
wines themselves and Claiborne & Churchill is known for the consis-
tent quality of all of their diverse wines.
Since Mother Nature ultimately dictates how the fruit will turn out,
winemaker Coby Parker-Garcia takes a cautious approach to each
vintage. “With most of the wine already in bottle, my mind moves from
one important factor of winemaking, bottling, to another important
factor of winemaking…harvest,” he says. “Things are looking promising
for this upcoming harvest,” he adds.
With only about 10,000 cases of wine made each year, it’s best to
secure them as soon as possible. Parker-Garcia employs Claiborne &
Churchill’s traditional European winemaking techniques which
includes extensive use of barrel-fermentation and barrel-aging, minimal
manipulation of the wines as they progress, spontaneous fermentation
using indigenous yeasts and the limited use of SO2. The philosophy is
that the winemaker’s task is to coax out the inherent flavors and charac-
ters of that particular grape. The goal has always been to create enjoy-
able dinner wines which exude a harmonious balance of fruit and oak,
structure and texture, and which compliment the meal.
Taste the overnight success wines located within the wine cellar of
their unique straw bale winery. The Tasting Room is open every day
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is a $5 tasting fee. Claiborne &
Churchill is located at 2649 Carpenter Canyon Rd. in the Edna Valley
of San Luis Obispo. For additional information, contact them at (805)

Jones’s passion for the human figure is evident in this show, which will
include pastel and watercolor originals from live models, as well as giclee
fine art prints of the same.
“Both men and women model for workshops I participate in, and I
love working on each – the male for his more pronounced muscle defin-

With a fine winery showing her work, Jones will also include pastel
paintings and prints of local vineyards, hence the show’s theme.
Although Jones considers watercolor her primary medium, recently to
prepare for this show, she has worked more in pastels, a medium suited
to her skills as a draftsman.
“As with many of us, I am a ‘work-in-progress.’ My studies will never
be complete, but this area to me is the ‘mecca’ for all the arts, including
the visual arts. I feel so very lucky to have landed here,” Jones said, adding
that, “the Lord has blessed me with good health, good teachers and the
support of family and friends in the pursuit of my craft.”

Cantara Cellars – Dream, Passion, Reality

by Mark Storer

M
ike and Chris Brown have become true winemakers, though
it wasn’t their first calling. The couple lives and works in
Ventura County and raised a family here. It wasn’t until well
into their careers that they took a trip to Oregon that included a little
wine tasting. “We were tasting the great Pinot Noirs of the Northwest
when we sort of looked at each other and said, ‘we can do this,’” Mike
says. Sometimes the most powerful decisions are the simplest ones
born of a common dream and that is how Cantara Cellars was born.
Their first winemaking was done at home with the Chardonnay
grapes that came straight from Mike’s parents ranch in Lodi. That was
the beginning of Cantara Cellars which now has a winery and tasting
room in Camarillo, right off of the 101.
“We considered moving to Lodi,” says Mike, but their lives and
young family were here in Ventura County. “We didn’t need to move Davis and continues to do so and together, the couple spends nearly
to make it work,” Mike says. They had all the resources they needed all of their free time at the winery seeing their high quality fruit
right here in their hometown, sourcing fruit from one of the great through every phase from crush to bottling.
California appellations and bringing it to Ventura County and “I never worry about the quality of the fruit,” says Mike about the

Mike also points out that Lodi “put together the first book” on of blind faith into a dream they had together and the result is an ultra-

work with are simply the best. “I don’t lay awake at night worrying became a reality. Cantara Cellars is all of that and the wines they make

Even so, the Browns will take between four and five trips to Lodi Mike and Chris invite you to come tour the winery at 126 Wood

harvest and the winemaking process. That dedication pays off and to taste their award-winning wines. For more information, call (805)
Cantara Cellars now produces some 1500 cases of wine a year. 484-9600 or go to www.cantaracellars.com.
“We’ve developed an extended family in our wine club and we
now have over 250 members,” says Chris. And Cantara’s wine club
members get all kinds of perks. They’re invited to blending parties,
where Mike walks them through tasting and blending of wines,
giving everyone a chance to write down their impressions and
making those a part of the decision making process. Members are
also invited to “pick-up parties” several times each year where they
come to pick up their order and, at least once during the summer,
enjoy a fully catered meal paired with the year’s releases. Membership
has its benefits, indeed.
Cantara’s blending parties have resulted in some truly amazing
wines. Mike takes particular pride in finding just the right compo-
nents to make the flavors truly unique. One of his latest blends,
which I was fortunate enough to taste, was Cabernet, Syrah and
Barbera. All three were perfect matches and Mike obviously spent a
good deal of time figuring out how each complimented the other.
“You follow the fundamentals in winemaking and generally
speaking, you’ll do fine,” says Mike. “But there are a lot of things, a
lot of components to it as well. We get great complexity for example,”
Mike continues, “from the yeasts we choose. I can create different
tastes and get different results not just from the fruit, but from the
yeasts we use as well.”
Part of the success of Cantara’s wines is the quality fruit according
to the Browns. “Sometimes, I see my challenge as really toning down
these big and bold flavors these wines can exhibit,” says Mike. “They
can be overpowering if you let them.”
Science and art sometimes collide. A married couple takes a leap
