FEM Syllabus 2014

This document provides an overview of a finite element method course offered at National Taiwan University. The course aims to guide students through the mathematical and programming foundations of the finite element method. It will include both lectures and labs. Lectures will cover basic theory and formulations. Labs will provide hands-on experience programming FEM codes in MATLAB and using a commercial FEM program, ANSYS. Students will be expected to spend about 8 hours per week on homework and lab assignments. Exams will cover both conceptual understanding and programming skills.

Finite Element Method, 2014
This is an introductory to finite elements offered by the Department of Civil n!ineerin!" #ational
Tai$an %niversity. The finite element method has been coined as the most useful tool for solvin!
en!ineerin! problems !overned by partial differential e&uations. The contents are vast and the
commercial pro!rams are sophisticated. 't is thus impetus (and sometimes difficult) to cover the
important aspects of the method. This course is offered to !uide you throu!h the mathematical and
al!ebraic basis of the method and help you to ac&uire hands(on e)perience on pro!rammin! the
method as $ell as to use the commercial pro!ram to solve en!ineerin! problems.
Course Objective
*earn the basic theory and formulation for finite elements (+) $ith hands(on e)perience on
+ pro!rammin! (,-T*-.) and + commercial pro!ram (-.-/%0).
Teaching and Learning Rationale
Three(hour $ee1ly lectures $ill be !iven to facilitate your learnin! of basic theory and
formulation for +. 2ou $ill need $or1in! 1no$led!e on elementary n!ineerin! ,echanics
and n!ineerin! ,athematics to comprehend the contents. Comprehensive lecture notes $ill
be released a fe$ days3$ee1s before the class and you are STRONGLY encoura!ed to !o
throu!h the contents before attendin! the class.
T$o(hour $ee1ly lab $ill be offered for hands(on e)perience on ,-T*-. pro!rammin! and
on usin! -.-/%0" a $idely used commercial + pro!ram. 4rior 1no$led!e on ,-T*-.
pro!rammin! is not re&uired (but helpful). 5ne very uni&ue feature $e $ill do is to $rite a
parser to parse the input records from -.-/%0 and do analysis both in your o$n ,-T*-.
codes and in -.-/%0. 6e thin1 this uni&ue feature $ill help you not only to unveil the blac1
bo) of -.-/%0 but also to !ive you a !reat confidence on your o$n + pro!rammin!.
7ome$or1 and lab assi!nments $ill be !iven in a re!ular basis and $e e)pect that you $ill in
!eneral spend about 8 hours after the class to complete these assi!nments every $ee1.
