UNIT 1: Pre Production/ LO3
The main part to any pre-production is:
Storyboard
Scripts
Risk assessments
Location recces
Sound material lists
For my LO3 the pre-production I have selected to write about is my pre- production for my corporate video which I completed earlier in the year, the reason I picked this one amongst others is because I feel this one was the most detailed and the best one my group and I made. Which is below.

Graphics and SFX ideas: When thinking about the graphics and effects for the corporate video, we have decided so far that we will be using titles at the bottom of the screen name each character talking, such as when interviewing the teachers and students. We put The HENLEY College logo at the end of the video while the credits were scrolled up on the screen to reinforce the name of the college. This helps the audience remember the name of the college. We played a song throughout the whole of the video that was produced and played by one of the students at the college. This helps show how proud the college is of the students work and that we try to promote their work as much as possible. Such as students art work on the walls in the rooms while the interviews were played.
Interviewee Release Forms: When asking for permission from the interviewees we told them what the footage would be used for and told them that there was a possible chance that the footage would be included in our final corporate video production which has a chance of being on the college website. All of the students and teachers that we interviewed gave us their permission that the footage could be used for educational purposes.

Production: The HENLEY College corporate video Sound and Music List: Voice Over Top be played at the beginning of corporate video, giving information about The HENLEY College and its history. Sound from Interview footage The sound from our interviewees answering our questions to them. Music playing throughout the whole production we asked permission from a music student; James Handcock who has produced his own music, he sent us two of them and we have chosen to use one of them; Compass Dreamer. This will played quietly whilst the voice over and interviews are playing and then in the interval clips of the college surrounds the music will be played loudly and then gradually fade back out.
Story Board
In any production you need to use a storyboard or you would not have a clue what to do or what to film, for me the storyboard is key it really gave me an understanding on what to do when it came to editing but also filming, it let me know where each shot or scene was taking place and how to film it, for example I knew because of the storyboard shot 14 on page 2 is 30 seconds of a teachers speaking into the camera at a close-up angle, so from there on I could easily film that shot with no problem.
Scripts
I wrote the script for the corporate video I produced, it was interesting to make and also very important for the type of production I was making, it consisted of all the relevant information needed for the video, I found most of the detail on the internet and in leaflets, although this wasnt an actual script an actor would read from like a drama for instance, it was one that was read over the footage we collected when we edited.
Risk Assessments
When it comes to making a production there are always hazards and risks, so these need to be monitored and accounted for, the sheets used to write down the hazards are called risk assessment forms and these have to be filled out with all the hazards spotted around the film set or anywhere you may be going, not only is it safe to have spotted anything which may cause an accident it is also a legal matter, if the hazards have not been checked or written down and then somebody do get injured it can cause a big penalty and cause a lot of trouble. The forms have to be filled in for the welfare of everybody involved in the production. The risk assessment does not come to me as an important factor to a production but over this unit they have stood out to me as being important now, when filming our production, we noticed a trip hazard on the Henley bridge and I tripped over but due to the risk assessment I knew it was there but I was clumsy otherwise the trip would have been more serious as it was next to a busy road.
Location Reeces
Locations Reeces are forms that show where you are going to be filming and what facilities there are about the area at which you may be filming. These are important for a production because you cannot just go anywhere and start filming for legal reasons, so you need to make sure you ask the owner of the location if it is okay to film on their land or in their home and they need to have signed the location reece. Without these reeces it would not give you a wide option to film your production in a certain area. Fortunately the video we filmed was a corporate video about The HENLEY College so most scenes and shots were filmed on site although the reeces still had to be completed. But in bigger productions I can definitely see the importance of Locations Reeces, for the production some of the Location Reeces allowed us to film around Henley.
Sound Material Lists
Sound Material lists have to be done and accounted for, because in some cases it is illegal and against copy write laws to use somebody elses music. If you wish to use music that is not your own you should really ask the producer or record company who made the song. On the other hand music and sounds are so important for productions they can completely change the feel of a production. The corporate video I used only used 3 parts to sound or music. So the list was helpful in knowing what I needed to included when editing the production, we used the script I wrote, the interview questions and two songs from a student who makes music at the Henley College, so therefore this came across well to the outcome of the video, we used close resources because we used a students music which only required an email to him to see whether we could use his music. We asked permission from a music student; James Handcock who has produced his own music, he sent us two of them and we have chosen to use one of them; Compass Dreamer. This will played quietly whilst the voice over and interviews are playing and then in the interval clips of the college surrounds the music will be played loudly and then gradually fade back out.
Evaluation and Importance
I believe I managed the production well in the end, I found by completing the pre-production booklet it really helped me through the process of completing the video, without it I would not have known what to do, it sort of took me by step-by-step what to do which was helpful. I have learnt in this unit how important it is, at the beginning I just thought it was a waste of time and wasnt needed, but now I know it needs to be done for any production. The time schedule was a bit faded, my group and I knew what to do and at what time but its difficult, so Im glad we scheduled everything out between the group, and we knew what day and what time to do certain parts. There where definitely a few parts that went wrong, we were losing time towards the end to edit because of the lack of urgency filming but apart from that everything ran smoothly. For example on the last day of filming two of our crew were not in which made it a more time consuming process some unfortunately it ran into our 3 editing days which made us rush for time. Our group had a checklist for all the production equipment which was helpful so we knew what equipment we needed on which day and we labelled the equipment to make sure nothing was lost or misplaced, unfortunately a few crew members where away on days of filming which made it difficult. But in the end we got there a produced a great corporate video, which one the Henley Film awards.
