Ergative

Ergative verbs are verbs where the subject of an intransitive sentence was the object of the transitive form of the verb. For example, with the verb "melt", "the sun melted the butter" has a subject, verb, and object, while "the butter melted" has the former object as the subject. Ergative verbs differ from other verbs in that the subject is affected by the verb.
