Henry Matisse has often been referred

to as one of the great artistic masters of
the 20th century. As one of the founders of
modern art, Henry Matisse is often
compared to Pablo Picasso.
Henry Matisse was able to work with in
a variety of artistic mediums. He worked as

stage and costume designer. Toward the
end of his life Matisse designed a total

Henry Hudson
Reading Passage

Henry Hudson set sail in 1607 in the attempt to find the

Northwest Passage to the Far East. Three subsequent
voyages followed.

Hudson’s first two voyages were made on the ship

Hopewell. After a third unsuccessful voyage, Hudson could
no longer find anyone in England interested in sponsoring
his quest of finding a shortcut to the Orient.

In 1608, Hudson dined with a Dutchman named

Emmanuel van Meteran, an English representative to the
Dutch East India Company. The company was looking for a
shorter route to trade with the Orient. Ultimately, the Dutch
hired Hudson to find that route.

With the assistance of a sturdy Dutch sailing vessel,

Hudson continued on his venture and eventually discovered
a river that had been called an assortment of names. These
names included Muhheakunnuk, Grande River, Rio de Sant
Antonio, and the River of Mountains. This river was once
again re-named and this time, named after Hudson himself:
Hudson River.

Mid Hudson Balloon Festival

Reading Passage

Each June visit to Dutchess County, New York to

attend the Mid Hudson Balloon Festival. Sponsored
and promoted by the Poughkeepsie Area Chamber of
Commerce, balloonists from both New York and New
Jersey pilot their balloons over the beautiful
landscape of the Hudson Valley.
During the entire festival, a variety of other
activities take place at a local City of Poughkeepsie
park. In addition to family shows and rides, carnival
games will be on hand to challenge and entertain
