About this compendium

This compendium is intended to be used as a stand alone document to introduce the various
schemes that exist to support mobility between India and Europe (in both directions),
enabling students and researchers to scan the range of schemes and quickly be able to
grasp the key essentials of each programme. It is not intended to give exhaustive information
on each scheme.

Using this booklet, we aim to provide comprehensive information that will be of interest to:
- Researchers and students wishing to travel to India from Europe,
- Researchers and students wishing to return to or visit Europe from India,

The information contained in the booklet is mainly targeted at those in graduate school or
who are working as a researcher, at postdoctoral or senior levels. The information should
also be of interest to those in universities, companies or research institutions responsible for
international relations or careers.

In addition to the EU schemes, the document lists the national schemes of European
countries. New schemes regularly come on board that will not be included in this booklet.
The best way to keep informed of all new funding developments is through the web sites
mentioned at the end of the compendium.

The information presented in this compendium has been gathered together by the Science &
Technology Counsellors of the embassies of the EU Members states in India and the
Delegation of the European Union to India.

The information provided is for guidance purpose only. While every effort has been made to
ensure accuracy, it is the responsibility of the reader to check the particular details for each
scheme. In particular, readers are advised to be vigilant to changes in the schedule for
deadlines and calls.

At the beginning of each national section we have listed the central access point for foreign
researchers coming to Europe: EURAXESS Services. EURAXESS Services is a network of
more than 200 centres located in 37 European countries. If you are a mobile researcher,
EURAXESS Services can assist you and your family in every step of your move, starting in
your home country and continuing until you have settled in a new one.

"EURAXESS - Researchers in Motion" is a key initiative funded by the European
Commission to enhance careers of researchers. EURAXESS brings together four major
initiatives which support the mobility of researchers in Europe: Jobs, Services, Rights and
Links.

EURAXESS Links is a networking tool for European researchers working outside Europe. It
has thus far been launched in the USA, Japan, China and recently in India and Singapore. It
provides information about research in Europe, European research policy, opportunities for
research funding, for international collaboration and for trans-national mobility.

FWO PhD fellowships
Outline
Research funding. The FWO-Vlaanderen is the funding agency
of Flanders for research performed at the universities in
Flanders. The FWO is very keen to promote international
collaborations as a driving force for excellence.

The Odysseus-program Odysseus Group I International leading
research
Outline
The Odysseus initiative is intended to offer start-up funding to
outstanding researchers who have built up a research career
outside Flanders. The funding should be used to develop a
research group within a Flemish university or to set up a
research line and become progressively more involved in the
Flemish research establishment.

Researchers who are internationally considered as pioneers in
their field and who already have a position at a foreign
university.
Budget
The support for this set-up ranges from 2 to 7.5 M for a 5-year
period.

It is expected that these researchers already lead their own
research group within the institute to which they are affiliated,
and this research group will consist of permanent staff, several
post-docs and a number of PhD students.

The Odysseus-program Odysseus Group II
Outline
The Odysseus initiative is intended to offer start-up funding to
outstanding researchers who have built up a research career
outside Flanders. The funding should be used to develop a
research group within a Flemish university or to set up a
research line and become progressively more involved in the
Flemish research establishment.
Budget
The support for this set-up ranges from 0.500 to 1 M for a 5-
year period.
Career stage
Researchers with the potential to develop a leading international
status. Researchers who have at least 3 years of post-doctoral
experience abroad and who are considered by leading
colleagues in the field to have the potential to develop a leading
international position.
Others
These researchers are expected to be leading a small team
within an existing research group, consisting of one or more
PhD students and post-docs.

Scientific networks
Outline
Besides bilateral cooperation, researchers can take the initiative
to start research networks including multiple international
partners. . These research networks pave the way towards
more intense collaborative research.

IWT Fellowships
Outline
Applied research IWT is the government agency of Flanders for
Innovation by Science and Technology. Its mission is to support
Flemish companies and research centres in realizing their
research and development projects.

All types of companies are eligible for R&D funding, even if their
innovative projects are non-technological. Including foreign
research institutes and companies as subcontractors.

In 2009, IWT has funded 65 projects with foreign partners for a

M of this amount for the foreign subcontractors.

The Industrial PhD Programme
Outline
The programme supports business-oriented PhD projects. The
PhD student is employed by a company and enrolled at a
university at the same time.

Niels Bohr Professorship
Outline
The Niels Bohr Professor program seeks to attract strong
international research capacities at the senior level that are able
to significantly advance the internationalization of a specific area
of research in Denmark with a lasting, long term effect.

Danish Government Scholarships
Outline
Danish higher education institutions receive a limited number of
government scholarships each year to fund highly qualified full-
degree students from non-EU/EEA countries.
Organisation
The scholarships are administered by the higher education
institutions, who individually decide which students are selected
to receive a scholarship. For further information about the
government scholarship, please consult the higher education
institutions admission details.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship you must be:
- a citizen of a country outside the EU and the European
Economic Area
- enrolled in a full degree higher education programme

Finnish Government Scholarship Pool
Outline
The Finnish Government Scholarship Pool programme is open

Researcher Mobility Grant
Outline
To raise the standard of research and to promote the
international mobility of researchers. For this purpose, the
Academy grants funding to researchers for research at Indian
universities and research institutes.

The grant and travel costs. In case the period in India lasts at
least six months, the travel costs of accompanying family

This scheme is to help scientists add an international dimension
