Prayer of Release
A Prayer of Release is a prayer asking God to remove any distractions that would get in the way of
hearing from and responding to Him. As we pray, we dedicate this time to the Lord and ask to be filled
with knowledge and understanding from Him, giving God His rightful role as teacher.
We can begin to model this posture of prayer with the children in our care. To lead two- to three-year-
old children, pray a simple prayer thanking God for His presence and asking Him to teach you as you
gather together. For example: Thank You, God, for being with us. We ask that You would teach us today.
Friends, before we go any further, lets all pray together and ask God to teach us. Lead the kids in
a Prayer of Release as you prepare to hear Gods Word.

(show image of King Darius.) This is King Darius. (Show the image of Daniel.) This is Daniel. Daniel
loved God. (Point to Daniel, hug yourself, and then point up to heaven.) Friends lets all do that
together: Daniel loved God. (Repeat the three motions.) King Darius liked Daniel. He asked Daniel to
be his special helper. King Darius had some other helpers too. (Show the kings helpers) These
helpers didnt like Daniel. They were mad because Daniel loved God. Lets do our motions again
for Daniel loved God. (Repeat the three motions.) Great job! They asked King Darius (Show the
image of King Darius) to make a rule. The rule was that no one could pray to God. They could only
pray to the king. Was that a good rule? Are we supposed to pray to King Darius? NO! We only
pray to God. Guess who loved to pray to God? (Show Daniel.) Daniel did, because Daniel loved
God. (Repeat the three motions.)

Daniel went to a special room, and he prayed to God three times every day. (Show the picture of
Daniel praying.) Can you help me count to three? One, two, three. Good counting! Daniel loved to
pray to God because he knew that God is the living God. God is alive! There is no one like Him.
Lets close our eyes and pray just like Daniel did. (Wait a minute, then close your eyes and pray a
brief prayer thanking God for being God. (Show the picture of the kings helpers.) King Darius
helpers were watching Daniel. One day, they saw Daniel praying. Was Daniel allowed to pray to
God? No. The kings new rule said he could not. The helpers went to King Darius and told on
Daniel. (Show the images of King Darius and the helpers.) They said, Look! Daniel is praying to
God! This made the king sad. He liked Daniel a lot, but Daniel broke the rule. He would get
punished. And so they put Daniel in a lions den. Oh no, I dont want Daniel to go in the lions den!
A lions den was where the lions lived together. It was full of mean, hungry lions!
(Show the images of Daniel and the lions.) King Darius put Daniel in with the hungry lions. He said,
Daniel, I hope your God can help you. Then he closed the den with a big rock so Daniel couldnt
get out. All night long, Daniel stayed with the lions. All night long, King Darius could not sleep. He
was worried.
Would the lions bite Daniel? In the morning, the king (Show the image of King Darius.) hurried to
see if Daniel was okay. The rock was pushed away. Guess what! Daniel was safe the lions didnt
hurt him! King Darius was so happy that God had protected Daniel. Daniel loved God. (Repeat the
three motions.) Daniel trusted God and was not afraid. Daniel knew that God is the one true living
God.
Did God take care of Daniel? (Allow the children to respond.) God was with Daniel when he prayed.
And God was with Daniel in the lions den. Our God is the living God. There is no other one like
Him.
