Performance

The document discusses performance in the context of social groups. It describes how social facilitation can improve performance on simple tasks but interfere with complex tasks due to evaluation apprehension. Social loafing, where people put in less effort when working with a group, is also discussed. Cures for social loafing include increasing identifiability, setting goals, and increasing involvement and group identification. Brainstorming and the Delphi technique are presented as ways groups can boost creativity and performance through idea building and repeated opinion surveys rather than face-to-face meetings.

PERFORMANCE

The action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function

any activity or gathering of reactions which leads to an outcome or has an impact on the
surroundings
the actions of a living being whenever confronted with a particular job.

Social Facilitation (Presence of Others)- when someone performs differently, either more
effectively or less effectively, in the presence of others than when alone.
Conclusion and Application- Social facilitation occurs because humans, as social
beings, respond in predictable ways when joined byother members of their species
Evaluation Apprehension- the fear of being evaluated or judged by another
WHY DOES SOCIAL FACILITATION OCCUR?
They involved strangers working on individualized tasks without any interaction, influence,
shared identity, or common goals. Yet,even in these circumstances the mere presence of
others was sufficient to improve performance when tasks were simple and interfere with
performance when tasks were difficult.
CONCLUSION AND APPLICATION
Conclusion and Application- Social facilitation occurs because humans, as
socialbeings, respond in predictable ways when joined by
other members of their species
Distraction-conflict Model- which recognizes that the presence of others creates a conflict
as to where attention is directed.
PROCESS LOSSES IN GROUPS
Ringelmann effect - the tendency, first documented by Max Ringelmann, for people to
become less productive when they work with others; this loss of efficiency increasesas group
size increases, but at a gradually decreasing rate.
MOTIVATION LOSS
Social Loafing: "Free Riding" when working with others additive tasks are those in which
each person's contributions are added together to another's. Unfortunately, as people work
together, some in the group may ride on the efforts of others. This is social loafing.

CAUSES AND CURES OF SOCIAL LOAFING
For every slack group memberworkers leaning on their shovels instead of digging with
them, meetings that degenerate into gabfests, task forces that perform no tasksthere are those
who strive to reach new levels of efficiency and productivity.
CURES OF SOCIAL LOAFING
Increase Identifiability
Free Riding
Set Goals
Increase Involvement
Increase Identification with the Group
PROCESS GAINS IN GROUPS
Steiners theory argued that a groups success depends, ultimately, on the resources that the
group members contribute and the processes that determine how their inputs are combined and
coordinated.
Brainstorming- A method for enhancing creativity in groups that calls for heightened
expressiveness, postponed evaluation, quantity rather than quality, and deliberate attempts to build
on earlier ideas.
IMPROVING BRAIN STORMING
Stick to the rule.
Pay attention to everyones ideas.
Mix individual and group approaches
Take breaks
Persist
Facilitate the session
Delphi technique -A group performance method that involves repeated assessment of members
opinions via surveys and questionnaires as opposed to face-to-face meetings.
