Introduction
Level sensors, either of the continuous measurement model which measures the whole range where the level changes, or of the
point level measurement model which detects the material when it reaches the specified points such as high and low, directly use
one of the physical characteristics the measured material has.
For example, float sensors and pressure transmitters utilize the density of measured fluid, capacitance sensors the dielectric
constant, Additionally, solids exhibit some characteristics that liquids do not, including shape, apparent density, angle of repose,
and water content. They are known to change, sometimes enormously, when operating conditions or application environments
change, adversely affecting the operation.
In the following paragraphs, sensors are divided into two groups, liquid level sensors and solid level sensors, and general
instructions for selection and use of level sensors are given based on the characteristics of each group.
LIQUID LEVEL SENSORS
The levels a liquid level sensor measures include: the interface between air and liquid, the one most commonly known as a
level; the interface between liquids, such as water and oil; and the interface between liquid and solid, such as the tank bottom
and the liquid inside it.
Liquids to be measured vary widely. They can be made of a single component or a mixture of multiple components, with
different density, viscosity, or dielectric constant. The state of liquid, such as if it is highly viscous, adhesive, with foam on its
surface, slurry, or easy to crystalize, is also very important in selecting a level sensor.
The state or condition of liquid in the tank, such as its behavior, pressure and temperature, can affect measurement accuracy
and thus is an important factor. Relation between the speed of level change due to filling or discharge and the sensor response
rate, foam because of an agitator, vortex, bubbling, and vibration also require special considerations.
If accuracy is important, the mounting location and method will have to be chosen carefully. In this case, sensors should not
be mounted near the inlet or the outlet, or a guide pipe or a stillpipe may have to be provided to prevent the sensor from being
carried away by the fluid.
Sensors using specific gravity
Liquid characteristics are very important in selecting a level sensor.
Float sensors and pressure sensors utilize specific gravity of the measured liquid. Although change in specific gravity causes
measurement error, the conditions are usually controlled in process measurement or control applications. The specific gravity is
not likely to change in these applications, and level sensors adjusted to the specified specific gravity will work fine. However, it
has to be noted that measurement error can occur when operating conditions are different from the usual states, such as during
startup of the plant.
Sensors using dielectric constant
Capacitive sensors use dielectric constant. Dielectric constant of liquid is generally sensitive to temperature change, and the
value decreases as the temperature rises. For example, dielectric constant of water is 88 at 0C, 80 at 20C, and 48 at 100C.
Thus, temperature conditions must carefully be considered when using a capacitive sensor.
Moreover, temperature change is not the only challenge. Many users use the capacitive sensors assuming the temperature
change will be small after process conditions are decided and there will be no other problem. Even when the temperature change
is small, care must be taken when the measured liquid has small dielectric constant or is adhesive, or when high accuracy
measurement is required.
SOLID LEVEL SENSORS
Solids exhibit totally different characteristics from liquids, with some possibly yet to be satisfactorily explained. It can be said
that solid level sensors have been developed empirically to this day.
Some of the characteristics are explained in the following paragraphs.
Angle of repose
When solid materials are poured onto a horizontal surface, a conical pile will form. The internal angle between the surface of the
pile and the horizontal surface is known as the angle of repose. The slope angle, by the way, at which solid materials start to slide
is called the angle of slide. The angle of slide is smaller than the angle of repose.
The angle of repose varies with the water content, size and shape of the particles, and tends to increase when water content
increases and when the particle diameter decreases.
Solid pressure
While liquid pressure is exerted equally in all directions, solid pressure acts the most strongly in the direction the pressure is
applied, and less strongly in other directions, with the weakest point at a 90 degree angle off the original direction.
When the applied pressure exceeds a certain limit, the particles start to slide.
Pressure exerted on the tank bottom becomes the largest when the solid level is 3 to 5 times the tank inner diameter, however,
at lower levels, most of the weight acts sideways on the tank wall and the downward force does not increase.
General Notes for Handling Level Sensors
3
Bridging
Bridging is one of the characteristics of solid materials that can pose problems.
Solid materials are usually discharged by gravity. Even those with high fluidity can deposit at the tank bottom in a funnel shape
and stop discharging if the outlet is small. Adhesive solids tend to discharge only at the portion directly above the outlet, and the
rest of material remains in the tank. These phenomena are called bridging. It is said that solids of its particle diameter larger than
1 mm do not cause bridging if the outlet diameter is at least 6 times as large as that of the particle.

General Description
The LR series, custom continuous level sensors,
are designed to meet customers requirements
for reliable operation. Models are available in
lengths up to 3900mm with a variety of mounting
configurations. The wide selection of materials
include 304SS, 316SS, PVC, CPVC, PP, and others.
For stable operation, we recommend using with our
controller of Model MP2000 or CU2000.
Operational Description
The LR series consists of the reed switch and
resistor on the PCB inside the stem and permanent
magnet inside the float. The float is the only
moving part which travels vertically on the stem.
A permanent magnet inside the float acts on a
series of closely set reed switches and resistors
on the PCB inside the stem. The reed switches
are actuated by the float magnetic field in a 2-3-
2 at a time" as the float travels. Accordingly, the
total resistance value of PCB is changed by float
traveling. The total resistance value is converted
into voltage and current signals in proportion to the
level of the liquid.
28
Interface Monitor
Model LR series float transmitters can monitor
the interface between two immiscible liquids. A
minimum specific gravity difference of 0.1 can be
accommodated. The weight and buoyancy of the
magnetic float will be adjusted so that the float sinks
through the lighter liquid and rides on the heavier
liquid. This option can be provided if the following
conditions are met:
1. Float material is 316 stainless steel
2. Minimum specific gravity difference is 0.1
3. Liquids have a specific gravity of 0.6 or greater
Volume Monitor
The control unit, MP2000-2, is provided with the
function of volume conversion selected from seven
common tank shapes as mentioned below.

No moving parts
Application
The LA is ideal for measuring drainage, night soil
or sewage water with high viscosity and suspended
solids.
General Description
The LA series air bubbler is simple and proven
level measurement system for dirty wastewater
treatment. The bubble tube is the only component
in contact with the liquids.
The control unit consists of pressure elements, a
needle valve, V/I converter and indicator. Even if
sludge or suspended solids become clogged in the
bubble tube, they can be blown out by operating
the bypass valve. There are two kinds of bubble
tube, an easily installed flexible PVC hose and a
304SS pipe which can withstand high temperature.
The LA is ideal for measuring drainage, night
soil or sewage water with high viscosity and/or
suspended solids.
Operational Description
The LA system operates by bubbling a small
flow of air from a submerged dip tube and then
measuring the resulting air back pressure. Pressure
increases proportion to depth of measured liquid
until air is forced out the bottom. At this point,
pressure stabilizes and the pressure is measured by
the control unit. The pressure signal is converted to
4-20mA DC output. The field indicator is provided
by the converter.

Protection For Electrical Surges:
1. Over voltage
Reed switches are not designed for the direct
switching of inductive loads such as motors,
contactors, solenoid valves, and so on. They are
susceptible to damage from over voltage. DO
NOT EXCEED THE CONTACT RATINGS. Contact
should be wired to miniature relays, suppressors
or similar devices. We recommend the use of our
relay unit model RE7000.
2. Over current
The switching lamps or stray capacity from long
cable length may produce surge current, and the
reed switch may be welded. Contact should be
wired to our relay unit model RE7000.
Technical Notes
1. The sealing compound over the lead wire egress
will keep moisture, but is insufficient to prevent
water penetration. Please install in good location
or apply suitable sealant.
2. If there is surface wave motion, use a time-delay
relay to dampen the switch action.
3. The switch should be located away from strong
magnetic fields such as those produced by
motors or solenoid values.
4. Max. Allowable impact is 10G. Shocks greater
than 10G may damage the switch.
5. Max. Pull load of lead wire is 19.6N. Exceeded
pulling during installation may damage the switch.

MODEL FS
WIDE DIFFERENTIAL FLOAT SENSOR
Features
Direct pump control
Adjustable ON/OFF switching levels
Unaffected by magnetic fields
Simple installation
General Description
The Model FS is a simple float sensor designed
for top mounting in open tanks or vessels. The FS
can be installed by bulkhead, screw-in or flange
mounting. Control range is adjustable from 60mm
to 1500mm. This sensor is designed for use as
a reliable component in hydraulic units, boilers,
magnetic cooling equipment, irrigation systems,
etc. The model FS is an economical solution for
emptying and filling control.
Operational Description
The model FS consists of a micro-switch operated
by a vertical rod and float mechanism. The float
freely moves between upper and lower stoppers
which are fixed on the rod at the customers
requested points. As the liquid level rises, the float
moves up until it reaches to the upper stopper. The
rod will then be pushed up by the buoyancy of
float, and the micro switch will be operated. When
the liquid level falls, the float moves down until it
reaches to the lower stopper. Then the rod will
be fallen down by the weight of the float, and the
micro switch operation will be reversed. A spring
mechanism attached to the rod is designed to
provide mechanical hysteresis. During the float
traveling on the rod, the operating state of micro
switch is held until the float reaches the upper or
lower stoppers.
The stoppers on the rod can be adjusted to obtain
desired switching range, and the 5A rated, single-
pole, double-throws switch makes the model FS
suitable for either empty or full operations.
Installation Notes
Installation of the model FS is extremely simple
and easily accomplished. When installing the
switch, the following points should be noted:
1. The spring operation tension is factory set, but
may require adjustment on site, especially if the
length of the operating rod is changed. Correct
operation should be checked and the spring
tension adjusted if necessary.
2. It is important that the shaft and rod be mounted
so that their axis is truly vertical.

MODEL MT
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY LEVEL SENSOR
Features
Stable operation with build up of scum and slurry
High durability
Easy operation of relay unit
Easy maintenance
General Description
Model MT system is a conductance actuated
control system utilizing the electrical conductivity
of the liquid to carry a small current which when
sensed, activates the appropriate controls. The
multi-points probe has the capability to control
several pumps and alarms, as well as indication of
levels, using discrete set points.
Operational Description
When AC power is applied to a pair of isolated
electrodes, without liquid between them, no current
is delivered. When there is liquid, it becomes a part
of electrical circuit and a current is delivered.
When liquid contacts the electrode, MT directly
detects the resistance and compares it with the
value set in the relay unit to determine the liquid
presence, then sends signals to amplifier, causing
the relay to give output signals.
Applications
Model MT system can be used in any suitable
conductive liquids. Applications involve both alarm
point detection and pump valve control. Since MT
system contain no moving parts, it is very reliable
and can be used in tanks where mixers or other
moving equipment would damage ordinary float
sensor or other level detectors.
MT system is very reliable to use in Waste water,
Sewage water, Fresh water, and Conductive liquids.
Manhole pump control is one of biggest application
for MT system.

MODEL KRV
CAPACITANCE LEVEL SENSOR
Features
No adjustment required
High sensitivity with dielectric constant as low as
1.1
Ignores coatings and build up
Detects solids, liquids, and interface of two
immiscible liquids
General Description
The KRV series of capacitance sensors are
designed for point level detection of liquids, solids,
powder, or interface between two immiscible liquids.
Radio Frequency sensors are typically used to
detect liquids, but have a difficult time with solid
or powder materials. The KRV series overcome
this limitation by having a parallel LC circuit on its
oscillator and five switch selected sensitivity ranges.
The KRV series easily detect solid and powder
materials such as plastic powder/pellet, fly ash,
carbon black, and similar substances.
The KRV series reliably detect the interface
between two immiscible liquids, oil and water as an
example. The KRV can be set to operate in water
but not in oil. Additionally, the KRV will ignore heavy
oily build up on its electrode.
Operational Description
When the electrode is in free air, the oscillation
circuit synchronizes with the detection circuit. When
the electrode is in the medium, the synchronization
between the oscillation circuit and the detection
circuit breaks with the capacitance of the medium
being taken in. This difference is then converted into
the relay output.

Operational Description
When the power is applied to an R7
sensor, a motor powers a revolving shaft
to which a paddle is mounted. When the
material level inside the container reaches
the revolving paddle, the paddle rotation is
halted then the motor itself starts rotating
around the shaft and activates an isolated
SPDT micro switch. This removes power
from the motor so that it stops rotating
and an alarm signal is provided. When the
material level falls below the paddle, the
motor resets and the micro switch restores
the revolving action.
Technical Note
Detection torque can be easily adjusted
on site by changing the spring position.
The R7 has four torque setting (see chart
below). The standard setting is B. Adjust
to A, if there is a slight vibration on the
hopper. Adjust to C or D, if the load is

General Description
The RB series of rotating paddle sensors are
designed to use in the application such as coal,
limestone, ore, and etc, where our R7 series can
not be used. Moreover, RB can also be used in the
application of powder and solid detection by changing
the detection torque.
The RB20 series are standard type. The RB21
series are custom made for heat resistive, extension,
and long shaft. The maximum operation temperature
is up to 250C. The extension type is up to 1000mm,
and long shaft is up to 3000mm at vertical mounting.
Operational Description
When the power is applied to an RB sensor, a
motor powers a revolving shaft to which a paddle
is mounted. When the material level reaches the
revolving paddle, the paddle rotation is halted then
the motor itself starts rotating around the shaft and
activates an isolated SPDT micro switch. This removes
power from the motor so that it stops rotating and an
alarm signal is provided. When the material level falls
below the paddle, the motor resets and the micro
switch restores the revolving action.

MODEL MWS
MICROWAVE LEVEL SENSOR
Features
Non-contact sensing
High penetration, 60m operation range
Unaffected by adverse environments
Simple beam alignment
Selectable detection mode, Block or Unblock
Adjustable on delay timer
General Description
The MWS-ST/SR-11 microwave sensor is a
level sensor consisting of a transmitter (MWS-
ST-11) and a receiver (MWS-SR-11) installed face
to face. The transmitter emits a continuous, low
power microwave beam towards the receiver
and an output relay is released when the beam is
obstructed.
The sensor has wide application across all areas
of industry where highly reliable, non-contact level
detection is required. The sensor is generally used
for process control by monitoring presence or
absence of products, flow or non-flow conditions
and point level detection in bins and silos. The
sensor may also be used as a proximity sensor for
detection of vehicles such as dump trucks and rail
cars.
Applications
Garbage level detection in Garbage Incineration
Plant
Flow/Non-flow detection of Cement, Sugar,
Firebrick, Wood chip, etc
Slab position in a hot oven of an iron plant
High level detection of pig iron for the car at iron
plant
Presence/absence detection in a plastic bottle,
Carton box, etc
Technical Advantages
High Penetration
24 GHz high frequency is not attenuated by dust,
moisture, or vapor, and easily penetrates process
build-up on antenna, firebrick, refractory etc.
No Angle Adjustment Required
Approx. 30 degrees beam spread prevents
misalignment.
On delay timer
On delay time, adjustable 0.1 to 10 seconds,
prevents instantaneous detection of falling
material whist filling.
Safety of Microwaves
Complies with FFC Title Rule 15 and OSHA
exposure specification stated in Section 1910.97.

MODEL AF10
ACOUSTICAL FLOW SENSOR FOR SOLIDS
Features
Acoustic noise sensor for equipment maintenance
requirements and solid flow sensing in pipes
Works in audible sound frequencies of 8 to 16kHz
Easy to install by strap or screw to pipe or bearing
Selfcontained with 24 to 264VAC or DC power and
1 SPST relay output
Offset, gain and time delay adjustments with (4)
LED indicators
General Description
The AF10 is a selfcontained acoustical sensor
that detects the audible noise made by powders or
grains in a pipe or conveyor. It may also be used to
detect audible noise on mechanical equipment for
preventive maintenance.
Operational Description
The solid state sensor detects acoustical
vibrations by a piezoelectric pickup. If the audible
vibrations exceed a Gain setting limit, a relay
output occurs. Because sound is transmitted
very effectively by a metal or plastic pipe, this is
especially suitable for pneumatic conveying. A lack
of sound indicates a plugged pipe.
Applications
The AF10 works best in granular and powdered
materials that are hard. The rattle of conveyed
material on the pipe wall would convey audible
noise through the pipe wall to the transducer. The
AF10 can also be affixed to motor or machine
bearings and can be adjusted to provide an alarm
when excessive noise from the bearing occurs.
Calibration will require an audible noise source
comparable to a faulty bearing.
