Unit 1: Properties and Structure of Matter Create an Element Trading Card Project
Introduction. Congratulations, alchemists! You all have completed your Level 1 training to become a world-class alchemist! In order for you to proceed to Level 2 training, you must first demonstrate your understanding of the elements. In this task, you and a partner will travel to a distant planet. You will explore this new world and identify one element that exists there but not on Earth. You must collect vital information about that element and create an element trading card that summarizes the structure, properties, and integration of the element into the periodic table.
Directions.
There are three parts to this project and each part will have a designated amount of time in class to complete. If a part is not completed within the given class time, you will be responsible for finding additional time after school to work on it. Your work will be graded based on a rubric score of 1-4, where 4 is demonstrates mastery of your Level 1 training.
Part 1: Element Report 1. Create: a. Element name b. Symbol derived from the element name. c. Drawing that reflects the nature or the description of the element. 2. Classify your element as a metal, non-metal, or semi-metal. a. Provide a 1-2 sentence explanation of what it means for the element to be a metal, non-metal, or semi-metal. 3. Identify the subatomic structure of the element. a. Identify the atomic number, atomic mass, numbers of neutrons, number of electrons (neutral atom) b. Include a Bohr drawing 4. Identify the properties of the element. a. What does the element look like? b. What are the properties of this element? (For example: Is it a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma? Is it malleable or ductile or flexible?) c. Where did you find the element? Be specific; on the planet is not a good enough description. Include a 3-4-sentence explanation of how the elements atomic structure (number of protons and electrons) contributes to the elements reactivity. 5. Find a location for the element in the periodic table. Keep in mind how the periodic table is organized. Consider the atomic number, atomic mass, and reactivity of the element. Include a 1-2 paragraph explanation of why the elements location on the periodic table adheres to the organization of the table and is useful to scientists. 6. List two advantages and disadvantages to the usefulness of this element on Earth. a. Advantages could include how it can be used in industry, medicine, or daily live. b. Disadvantages could include how it can be toxic to humans, animals, or Earth, or the limitations of this element in industry. c. Each advantage and each disadvantage must include a 2-3-sentence description that identifies the advantage/disadvantage and reasons supporting how the elements structure plays a role in the usefulness of the element on Earth.
Part 2: Creating Your Trading Card 1. Organize the information in your report into a trading card. Although trading cards are typically 2.5 x 3.5, your trading card must be on a provided poster of 25 x 30.5. 2. Trading card posters must convey information in a readable manner. Include color and images to support your descriptions.
Part 3: Presenting Your Trading Card 1. Posters will be hung on the walls around the room. You will present your poster with your partner to the class during a guided Gallery Walk. During this presentation, you must discuss all components of Part 1 from your element report.
