Boost Converter Simulation Using PSIM
Boost Converter Simulation Using PSIM
To further analyze the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique as well as
the characteristic curve of photovoltaic (PV) cell, we have applied the Perturb &
Observe Algorithm using PSIM to simulate the most suitable converter for PV cell
applications.
The Perturb & Observe algorithm is obtained that the operating voltage of the PV cell
is perturbed and increased if the resulting change in output power of the PV cell is
positive. Then, we are going to achieve in the direction of Maximum Power Point and
keep perturbing in the same direction.
We are going in the direction of Maximum Power Point reversely and the sign of
perturbation will be changed if the PV cell is negative.
Implementation of interleaved boost DC DC converters
Interleaved boost converter is built by four inductor branches. The triangular signal is
also divided by fours and it performs output current reduction. Phase shift of each
triangular signal is set by 60 degrees and average of its period.
The control signal of feedback loop will feed all four triangular signals for consisting
PWM signal. Besides that, this interleaved boost converter is also capable of
Maximum Power Point Tracking as one control signal is enough to affect all four
PWM signals.
Implementation of Maximum Power Point Tracking Technique (Perturb &
Observe)
A maximum power point tracking model is built and based on Perturb & Observe
Algorithm.
Vref_1 and Vref_2 is connected to two bi-directional switch and energized either
perturbed photovoltaic cell input power raise and fall by in parallel with a NOT gate.
The differentiator will calculate the derivative of the input power versus time to obtain
a positive or negative result to the summer. Vref_3 is a constant which represent
the maximum voltage while maximum power point reached.
Flow chart of the maximum power point tracking model is shown as follow. There is a limitation
that the maximum PV voltage (while maximum power point) is constant in PSIM model and it
means power tracking for temperature changes may be available.
The input power is very close to PV maximum power under Perturb & Observe
control.
Input power of interleaved boost converter and PV maximum power without
MPPT (P&O)
Input power of interleaved boost converter and PV maximum power with MPPT (P&O)
The irradiation changes are capable in PSIM model as the waveform shown below. It
also performs the characteristic of PV cell in which maximum power is almost
proportional to irradiation.
