Total perimeter for first lane = 400 m
Distance from the finishing line = 400 400
= 0 m

Total perimeter for second lane = 200+2(103.771)
= 407.543
Distance from the finishing line = 407.543 400
= 7.543 m

Total Perimeter for third lane = 200+2(107.543)
= 415.086
Distance from the finishing line = 415.086 400

b) I would choose first design, probably due to the first design has a straight path can reduce the rate of injury to
participants.

ACTIVITY 5: CONCLUSION

a) Causes of track and field injuries

1. Runner's knee. This is a common overuse injury. Runner's knee has several different causes. It often happens
when your kneecap is out of alignment.
Over time, the cartilage on your kneecap can wear down. When that happens, you may feel pain around the
kneecap, particularly when:
Going up or down stairs
Squatting
Sitting with the knee bent for a long time
2. Stress fracture. This is a small crack in a bone that causes pain and discomfort. It typically affects runners in
the shin and feet. It's often due to working too hard before your body gets used to a new activity.
Pain gets worse with activity and improves with rest. Rest is important, as continued stress on the bone can
lead to more serious injury.
3. Shin splint. This is pain that happens in the front or inside of the lower leg along the shin bone (tibia). Shin
splints are common after changing your workout, such as running longer distances or increasing the number
of days you run, too quickly.People with flat feet are more likely to develop shin splints.

b) Ways to avoid track and field injuries

1. Find the Right Shoe
What makes running so easy is that it's a fairly simple task: step outside of the house with a pair of running
shoes and take off. Since there is only one real piece of equipment for running, it should make it that much easier to
invest in the right shoe. The proper shoe can equate to an enjoyable running experience, while an I improper shoe can
result in injury or pain during the run.

2. Knowing Limitations
Overuse injuries are common with runners. The simple reason for this is that runners start running long
distances too soon and too often.

3. Develop a Dynamic Warm Up
The days of static stretching before warms ups are over, but that doesn't mean there can't be some type of
warm-up that takes its place. A runner's body should be warm before starting an intense run; otherwise injuries can
creep up on a runner. A dynamic warm up will help increase oxygen and blood flow to the body in order to prepare it
for a hard run. This warm-up will also allow the muscles to become elastic, which will help prevent injuries and
soreness that you may experience after a hard run. This dynamic warm up could include:
Jogging
Knee raises
Butt kickers
Back peddling
Shuffling

REFLECTION

1. This project means a lot to me because I was able to learn many stuffs throughout carrying out this
project. By conducting this coursework, I was able to learn on how to practically apply mathematical skills
in real-life situations. Thus, it provided me a better understanding of the topics which are being discussed
in this project work.Apart from that, this coursework has also enhanced my skills in terms of technology.
Using software such as Microsoft Excel enables complex calculations to be solved much easier. It gives
me new experience and useful skills in using technologies

2. While conducting this assignment, I have learnt that perseverance pays off after all the hard
work succeeding in completing this project with my teachers guidance, I have a new perception of
Mathematics in our daily tasks. Besides, this assignment has taught at me to be patient while
calculating. Moreover, I have also learnt to be more confident and self dependant.

APPRECIATION

First of all, I would like to thank all of them who have helped me to complete my project work
for the year 2014. I would like to thank the principal of SMK Bukit Mertajam , Puan Chew Saw Hwa
for giving me this opportunity to carry out and complete this Additional Mathematics project.
Next , I would like to thank my Additional Mathematics teacher, Mr Hong , who have been
guiding me through out the whole project until it is done. He provided me some very useful tips
and information on this project so that I can complete this project successfully.
Not forgetting , my parents who have been by my side to give me support and encouragement
to complete this project. They provided me with basic things that I needed to complete this project.
Last but not least , I would like to thank all my dear friends who have been sharing ideas and
information about this project. Cooperation that they gave helped me a lot to complete this project
in time.

Thank you.

OBJECTIVE

All the form five students who are taking Additional Mathematics are required to carry out a project
work. This year the Curriculum Development Division, Ministry of Education has prepared two tasks for us.
Based on the tasks given, we are suppose to choose and complete only ONE task based on our area of
interest and capability. This project can be done in groups or individually, but each of us is expected to
submit an individually written report. As we are suppose to complete this project, we are to gain valuable
experiences and able to :

1. Collect data of the circumference and radius of semicircle.
2. Calculate the distance of each lane.
3. Solve problems by using various strategies.
4. Relate our knowledge with data obtained.
5. State the cause of injury during the running and ways to avoid accidents.
