Incense Recipes

Here are some of the incense recipes I have collected. Some are mine, some are f
rom the net, and some are from books. To my knowledge, it is the largest collect
ion on the Internet. Do have fun with them and try your own blends.
A
Abramelin Incense
2 Parts Myrrh
1 Part Wood Aloe
a few drops Cinnamon Oil
Burn to contact spirits during rituals or as a simple consecration incense to sa
nctify the altar or majickal tools.
Aine Of Knockanie Incense
1/2 oz (15 gm) meadowsweet flowers and leaf (gathered when the plant is in full
bloom and dried)
1/2 oz (15 gm) finely chopped pine needles
1/2 fl.oz. (15cc) lemon verbena oil
by the way, meadowsweet blossom also makes a delicious wine.
Air
Air is the other masculine element and it is usually associated with east. Areas
governed by this element are education, communication, weather magic, general p
ower raising, and music magic. The following combination makes a basic air incen

4 parts rosemary
2 parts mugwort
1 part chicory
1/2 part coffee beans
other air-related herbs and plants include benzoin, elm bark, lavender, parsley,
sage, and spearmint

This works well for most solar deities. It is light and cleansing, but be sure t

Arabian Incense Powder
To five ounces of coarsely ground frankincense, add
1/2 oz each of
ground cascarilla

mix them well. After you get your powder situated you add the oil/s of choice de
pending on what type of aroma you are after or just use it as is.

Pack the petals tightly into the crock, layering them with the coarse salt. Cove
r tightly and leave in a cool, dry place for 6 weeks.
Filter the liquid into clean glass jars, and leave these in the hot sun for 6 mo

rom the attar.

Balance
To restore and maintain balance of energy in your home. A multi purpose balancin
g incense, use frequently in each room of your home. Especially good for the bed
room.

hemp for rope making.

Gives great amounts of courage to those who are fearful or timid. Used to anoint
purple candles and wear the oil when confronting frightening or dangerous situa

Crystal Purification Incense

1 Pinch finely powdered salt
a small purified Quartz crystal point
Pour a bit of incense leaving the crystal in the jar) onto charcoal. Smolder & p
ass the crystal to be purified through the smoke wafting away the stones impurit
ies. Naturally, this incense can be used in connection with the others recommend
ed purifying rituals, or in place of them.
Curse-Breaker Incense
2 Parts Sandalwood
1 Part Bay
Burn at night near an open window if you feel "cursed". Though curses are rare,
if we believe we are cursed, we are! Therefore smolder this incense & visualize
it banishing all negativity from you. Repeat this ritual for 7 nights during the
Waning Moon, if possible or desirable.

Diana Of The Moon
It is recommended that it be made in the hour and the day of the Moon - i.e. the
first or eight hour after sunrise, or the third or tenth hour after sunset on a
Monday.
Thoroughly mix equal amounts of the following:

Add a few drops of wintergreen oil and moisten with a little clear mineral oil.

Dry peel of one Orange
1 t. Nutmeg
1 t. vanilla extract
1 t. almond extract
Petals of one carnation
Petals of one rose
Dragon Breath
1/3 cup sassafras
1 tbs cedar wood powdered (or small chips)
1 tbs dragons blood (substitute myrrh or cedar
resin)
1/2 tbs rosemary leaves, dry and crushed
2 tbs cinnamon
1/2 tbs nutmeg
1/2 tbs chili powder
Burn on charcoal disks
Dragon Love
Mix 1/3-cup cinnamon with vanilla extract until you
make a muddy paste. Roll into a ball, place on wax
paper and let dry one week.
After week is up, fold the wax paper over the
cinnamon/vanilla and crush with hammer. Grind in
mortar and pestle until fine powder. Mix with
dragons blood resin (substitute another resin, if
you dont have dragons blood), add more vanilla
extract and mix into muddy paste again. Roll into
ball, place on wax paper, dry for one week.
Crush again, and grind. Burn on charcoal disks.
Draw Love Incense
(To attract love, strengthen love you have, to expand your
ability to give and receive love)

Earth is usually associated with the direction of north. This element is feminin
e in nature, and its attributes include stability, fertility, prosperity, ground

In an enamel or glass bowl mix equal parts of:

Once the mix is well mixed together, it can be charged for use as ritual incense

Fire
Fire is a masculine element, one usually associated with the south in the Northe
rn Hemisphere. Its energies govern the areas of protection, employment, sex magi
c, the law, exorcism, strength and courage, and profound transformations or chan
ge. A basic fire incense recipe contains:
4 parts frankincense
3 parts cinnamon
1 part dried orange peels
1/4 part thyme
Other fire-related herbs and plants include allspice, basil, bay, black pepper,
clove, cumin, dill, garlic, ginger, nutmeg, onions, and thistle.

Burn while scrying, or throw into coals of a fire once the flames have been quen
ched & gaze into them to see images form within them. the latter rite is best pe

r noisome creatures. Stand back and hold your nose or better still, leave the ro
om while this incense is smoldering. Those herbs marked * arent necessarily dan
gerous or baneful, but they emit a powerful smoke that is irritating to the eyes

Kyphi
Kyphi is an ancient Egyptian formula of which the Greek Essayist, Plutarch (46-1
20 AD) said: "its aromatic substances lull to sleep, allay anxieties, and bright
en the dreams. It is made of things that delight most in the night and exhibits
its virtues by night."
The following is a traditional recipe for making Kyphi. If you want to stick to
it fine, but you may also omit or substitute certain herbs if some of the ingred
ients are difficult to obtain.
.Place 1/4 cup raisins in a bowl. Add just enough white wine to cover the raisin
s, cover
loosely with a tea towel or cheesecloth, and allow to steep for seven days.
On the third day, blend equal parts of the following powdered herbs in a bit of
white wine: Juniper, Acacia, Henna, and Sweet Sedge Root. After two days drain a
nd reserve any liquid.
On the last day, drain the raisin mixture, reserving the liquid. In a small bowl
mix together equal parts of the following ground herbs: Calamus, Gum Mastic, Pe
ppermint, Bay Laurel, Orris, Cinnamon, and Galangal. Set aside. In another small
bowl blend together:
1 T. Powdered myrrh, and 1 T. clove honey. To this mixture add the ground herbs,
and the raisins and herbs steeped in wine. Blend well. Add a little of the reser

ved wine if the mixture becomes too dry. Follow the directions for making cone o
r block incense.
Kyphi (from Susanne Fischer-Rizzi)
4 parts Frankincense
2 parts Mastic
1/2 part Juniper berries
1/4 part Calamus
1/4 part Galangal
1/2 part Cardamom
1 part Cinnamon bark or flower
1 part Myrrh
1 part Lemon grass
1/2 part Rose leaves (dried rose buds)
1 part Benzoin Siam
1 1/2 part Sandalwood
a pinch of Aquillaria wood
1/2 part Forest honey, liquid
1 tablespoon as needed Red wine, full bodied
8 parts Sultana raisins, unsulfured
.Soak the raisins overnight in the wine. Grind the frankincense, mastic, myrrh,
and benzoin with a mortar and pestle. Individually grind the cinnamon, juniper b
erries, calamus, galangal, cardamom and sandalwood. Mix the ground ingredients t
ogether, crumble in the rose buds and lemon grass. If you can get aquillaria woo
d, use 1/2 teaspoon to 1 cup of the other mixture; otherwise, it can be left out
.)
.Take the raisins out of the wine and blend them into the mixture and add the ho
ney. Kneed the mixture well and crumble with your hands. Spread it out on a clea
n cloth to dry in a warm place away from oven heat and direct sunlight. Dry for
seven to 14 days, turning often. Once it has dried, it can still be formed into
the traditional pea-sized pellets for burning.
Kyphi 2
4 Parts Frankincense

Mix the ground dry ingredients thoroughly. Let sit in an airtight container two
weeks. In a separate bowl, mix together the oil, wine, honey & raisins. Add to t
he dry ingredients & blend with the hands. Let sit another 2 weeks. Then, if des
ired, grind to a fine powder. Kyphi is used in night rituals, to invoke Egyptian
Goddess & Gods & as a general majickal incense.
Kyphi 3
Soak about 1/2 handful raisins in white wine for 5 days.
Take equal parts of:
juniper

acacia
sweet sedge root
henna
Macerate all in white wine for 24 hours.
Take equal parts of:
calamus
gum mastic
peppermint
bay
laurel
cinnamon
Galangal
orris
Grind these to a powder, mix well and set aside.
Drain the raisins, mix with 1 TB. myrrh and 1 TB. honey.
Add the drained herbs, and finally work in the powdered herbs.
If the mixture is too dry, add a little of the white wine.
Spread out on a board to dry, powder and use on charcoal discs
Kyphi 4
This recipe was reconstructed from ancient Egyptian papyri.
Although an ingredient or two may not have translated correctly, this should be
pretty
close to the actual incense used in Egyptian temples.
Ingredients:
3/4 part Honey
3 part Raisins
1/4 part Copal
1/4 part Myrrh
1/4 part Orris
1 part Sandalwood
1/4 part Storax
1/2 part Frankincense
1/2 part Cinnamon (REAL stuff only, and grind it forever)
Red Wine (enough to moisten mixture)
Benzoin (enough to roll balls in)
Thoroughly grind all ingredients separately, then mix together groups of ingredi
ents by nature: resinous together, powdery together, etc. Finally, mix all batch
es together, add red wine to moisten, then roll into 5/8" balls and roll balls i
n benison. Lay out on waxed paper for a week or so, until firm. The balls can be
used when firm, but for best results, they should be allowed to cure a few week
s.

To guard your home from thieves: During the day smolder this mixture in a censer
before the front door, then move it to each opening in the house doors, windows
, cellars, etc.), through which thieves may enter. Visualize its smoke forming
an invisible but impenetrable barrier. Move in a clockwise circle throughout you
r home, replenishing the incense as necessary.
Repeat monthly at the time of the Full Moon, if possible, or, use as needed. Thi

Moon
This incense is used in many rituals and is a common spell component. It is an i
ncense of increase that is deceivingly easy to make.
Use all of your focus and energy, your will and intention, while making this sce
nt.
It is used over charcoals (the ones specifically made for incense) or over a ri
tual fire.
CAUTION If used over a ritual fire, flames will leap up along the
dust trail of this incense powder! There will be sparkling (sparks) of incense o
utside
of this trail of flames as well!
This is an impressive effect, but dangerous if you are
not practiced at it! Start out small and toss about 1 teaspoon of it over the gl
owing
coals or flames, all at once, dont trail the dust or sprinkle it. Stand away fr
om the fire,
and upwind. Use in areas that do not require burn permits, and have something to
douse the fire nearby. Do not use if you are wearing gauzy or loose ritual robes
and costumes.
Within the three days prior to the actual full moon, but not after! Gather the i
ngredients
required, along with a pestle and mortar to blend them in. If desired, you can u
se your cauldron, and some sort of crushing or mixing tool.
1 ounce (about 30 grams) of the finest sandalwood powder you can find (santalum
album)
5 grams (a marble sized nugget) of amber resin, NOT the stone! The soft, sweet
smelling resin that is often imported from India, available at health food store
s,
and of course herb and Witch shops.
3 drops of vanilla essential oil. NOT the perfume or fragrance oil, only
true vanilla from the orchid (Vanilla planifolia or Vanilla aromatica) If this i
s cost
prohibitive or unavailable, use real vanilla extract available at most any groce
ry store.
Preferably outside, under the actual full moon, or indoors near a window where t

he moon is visible: Fill the mortar or cauldron with the sandalwood powder, and
crush the amber into it with the pestle or tool of your choice. Use clockwise or
deosil blending motions.
Focus on the energy of the full moon, or if you are making the incense for a spe
cific spell, focus on the goal of that spell alone. You can incorporate your fav
orite words of power or chant while doing this.
When the powder is smooth and consistent, add the vanilla, one-drop at a time wh
ile saying your chosen words of power, (which is best) or the following (which w
ill suffice in most cases):
Drop of moon, grant my boon.
Blend in the drops in the same way you blended in the amber resin. Place the mix
ture in a clear glass jar with an airtight lid. Keep it away from heat, sunlight
, and moisture.
Charge it under the light of the full moon on the three days prior to it becomin
g actually full. The full moon light penetration is the reason for not storing t
his in an opaque jar.
It is ready for use immediately, but can be charged more if desired.

Water is usually assigned to the direction of west. This is the element of the n
atural psychic, one related to pregnancy, birth, rebirth, death, regeneration, d
ivination, purification, psychic endeavors, spirit contact, and past life explor
ation. Water is the other feminine element.
To make the basic water incense try using the following:

1 part catnip

Other water-related herbs and plants include cypress bark, jasmine, kelp, lotus,

Add your ingredients to your mixing bowl one at a time. Measure carefully, and i
f the leaves or blossoms need to be crushed, use your mortar and pestle to do so
. As you blend the herbs together, state your intent. You may find it helpful to
charge your incense with an incantation, such as:
As the sun returns, back to the earth,
we celebrate life and death and rebirth.
Cold winter nights and chilly days,
smoke in the sky, carry ills away.
A time of magic, at the longest night,
for without the dark, there cannot be light.
Herbs of power, blended by me,
As I will, so it shall be.
Store your incense in a tightly sealed jar. Make sure you label it with its name
and date. Use within three months, so that it remains charged and fresh.
