CHM151 Experiment 1

This experiment aimed to determine the percentage of ascorbic acid in a vitamin C tablet. The procedure involved dissolving the tablet in water, titrating the solution with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) using potassium iodide and starch as indicators, and calculating the moles and mass of ascorbic acid present. The results showed that the vitamin C tablet contained 24.59% ascorbic acid based on the titration values and known mass of the tablet.

Experiment 1

Determination of Ascorbic Acid content in Vitamin C tablets

Aim: To determine the percentage of ascorbic acid in vitamin C tablet
Procedure:

1. Weigh a vitamin C tablet in a 50mL beaker and add about 30m of deionized water to dissolve it.

2. Transfer the solution into 250mL volumetric flask thoroughly

3. Transfer 25 ML of vitamin C solution into a 250mL conical flask using a pipette.

4. Add 50mL of water, 5mL of 4% KI solution, 2mL of 3% CH3COOH solution and 5 drops of starch
solution into the conical flash.

5. A white tile is placed beneath the flask.

6. Fill the 50mL burette with 0.01M N-bromosuccinimide(NBS).

7. Before titration, record the initial burette reading.

8. The end point is reached when 1 drop of NBS turns the solution into a permanent yellow-green
or blue colour. The final burette reading is recorded.

9. The whole titration process is repeated 1 more times

Results:
Experiment Volume of Vitamin C
(mL)
Burette Reading (mL) Volume of NBS
(mL) Final Initial
1 25 56 0 56
2 25 55.7 0 55.7

Discussion:
1. Upon conducting the experiment, the purity of solution should be taken into account.
Contaminated solution will affects the results obtained.
2. At step 2, rinse the beaker twice with some deionized water and transfer the washings into
volumetric flask to make sure that all the Vitamin C solution has been thoroughly transferred to
volumetric flask.
3. The titration process should be stopped immediately the second when the solution turned into
permanent yellow-green or blue colour. Record the final burette reading.
4. Potassium iodide is used in this experiment to indicate or to show the end point of the titration
process. (When the colour of the solution turned into permanent yellow-green or blue, the
titration process should be ended)

Conclusion:
Number of moles of NBS = MV
1000
= 0.01 x 55.85
1000
= 0.0005585 moles
Number of moles of ascorbic acid = 0.0006 moles
Mass of ascorbic acid in 25mL
= 0.0005585 x 176.13g/mol = 0.09837g = 98.37mg
Mass of ascorbic acid in tablet
=98.37 x 250
25
= 983.686mg

Mass of vitamin C = 4.0g = 4000mg
Percentage of ascorbic acid = 983.686 x 100 = 24.59%
4000

The percentage of ascorbic acid in vitamin C tablet is 24.59%.
