This document provides information about the course "Secondary Metabolites (3+4 hp), 7.0 credits". The course is intended for PhD students and is divided into two parts. The first part covers different groups of secondary metabolites, their structures, properties, biosynthesis and analytical methods through lectures, exercises and study visits. The second optional part treats secondary metabolite biosynthesis from an organic chemistry viewpoint through literature studies and discussions. Upon completion, students will have basic knowledge of secondary metabolite structures, functions, biosynthesis and analytical techniques including hands-on experience identifying metabolites using HPLC and GC/MS. The course is offered at the Uppsala BioCenter by the Department of Plant Biology and Forest Genetics.

PNS0072 Secondary Metabolites (3+4 hp), 7.

0 credits
Syllabus approved: 2010-08-30
Subject:
Marking scale: Pass / Failed
Prerequisites:
The course is intended for PhD students within SLU Graduate School in Organism Biology but will be open for
all interested PhD students/researchers.
Objective:
Metabolism is frequently divided into primary and secondary metabolism. The primary metabolism is the central
metabolism necessary for maintaining life whereas, secondary metabolites are important because of their
biological effect on other organisms. The function of many secondary metabolites is yet to be determined, for
example, many secondary metabolites produced by plants attract or repel insects or protect the plants from
grazing, whereas many fungal and bacterial secondary metabolites have antimicrobial properties. Based on the
above advantages many secondary metabolites have been developed into important pharmaceuticals during the
last few decades, whereas others are used as flavors or fragrances.
The aim of the course is to provide a basic understanding of secondary metabolites based on the structural
elucidation, biosynthesis of key secondary metabolites and biological activity of representative compounds.
After the completion of the course the student would have acquired basic knowledge on
- the structures, occurrence, biosynthesis, properties and functional role of the major secondary metabolites.
- analytical methods suitable for different types of secondary metabolites, including hands on experience on the
use of analytical techniques such as HPLC and GC/MS to identify some secondary metabolites including
interpretation of data.
Content
The course is divided into two parts. During the first part of the course (3 hp), the different groups of secondary
metabolites, including polyketides, terpenes, alkaloids, peptides, phenylpropanoids and carbonhydrates, will be
discussed with respect to structure, occurrence, properties, biosynthesis and analytical methods. This part of the
course will be given in the form of lectures by specialists at the Uppsala BioCenter and by invited experts, as
well as laboratory exercises, group discussions and study visits.
The second optional part of the course (4 hp) will treat the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites from an
organic chemical viewpoint, and will consist of literature studies and group discussions.
Literature:
Part one: Natural Products The secondary metabolites, James R. Hanson, ISBN 0-85404-490-6.
Part two: Medicinal Natural Products A biosynthetic approach, Third edition, Paul M Dewick, ISBN 978-0-
470-74167-2.
