Punching Shear Check For Slab

1. Punching shear check was performed for a concourse slab supported by a plunge column at the construction and permanent stages. 2. At the construction stage, shear reinforcement and structural steel sections were provided to resist the punching shear load of 6552kN, and the calculated shear stress was less than the permissible value. 3. At the permanent stage, with a higher load of 7560kN, the calculated shear stress was still less than permissible without structural steel sections, as they were neglected, and the provided shear reinforcement was sufficient to resist the load.

ULS load factor = 1.3
ULS load to be considered for punching shear = 160 x 31.5 x 1.3 = 6552 kN
Punching Shear Check at 'd/2' from support face:
Maximum net load on column = 6552 kN
Finished size of plunge column = 1080 mm x 480 mm
Overall thickness of concourse slab = 600 mm
Effective depth of base slab = 518 mm
Grade of concrete of base slab = 35 MPa
Provided structural steel section to increase shear capacity = ISMB 300 of grade 250 MPa
Web area of steel section (Tw * D) = 2250 mm

Provided numbers of steel section at critical shear plane = 4 nos.
Total area of structural steel 9000 mm

Shear force to be taken by concrete section = 5202 kN
Permissible Punching shear stress (cl. 31.6.3 IS:456) = 1.5 x 0.25 x 35

Perimeter for shear at 'd/2' from column face = 5192 mm
Calculated punching shear stress =V / (b x d) = 1.934 MPa < 2.219 MPa
OK
