Sequence and Series

1. The document discusses sequences and series, which are important tools in mathematics. A sequence is a function whose domain is the set of natural numbers. Sequences can be described explicitly by a formula, recursively, or in language. 2. The document defines monotonic, bounded, and convergent sequences. A monotonic sequence is either monotonically increasing or decreasing. A bounded sequence is bounded above by a constant. A convergent sequence converges to a limit. 3. The document discusses arithmetic progressions and geometric progressions. An arithmetic progression has a constant difference between consecutive terms, while a geometric progression has a constant ratio between consecutive terms excluding the first.

SEQUENCES AND SERIES
IMPORTANT TOOLS / TECHNIQUES TIPS
A sequence is a function whose domain is the set of natural numbers
and the range of the sequence is subset of real numbers (complex
numbers), then it is called real (complex) sequence. Sequences are
generally denoted by
{ }
n n
a a , > <
or
( ) n f
where n
a
of
( ) n f
give us the value
at n. A sequence can be described in three ways :
(i) By explicit formula (i.e., just like functions).
(ii) By recursion formula, i.e., two or more terms are connected
through some defnite relation.
(iii) By describing through language.
For example,
1 +

n
n
a
n
is a sequence given by explicit formula. The
sequence whose nth and
( ) 1 n
th terms are connected as
1
2

n n
a a
is
called a recursion sequence. In such sequences if the frst term is known
then all other terms can be found by applying recursion formula
successively.
Finally a sequence given by n
a
= nth prime (
7 , 5 , 3 , 2
4 3 2 1
a a a a
etc.) can neither be expressed by explicit formula nor by recursion
formula. (Still remains a mystery and conjecture in number theory). But
there are sequences, which can be given both by recursion formula and by
explicit formula. For example
( ) 1 + n a a
n
d,(a and d are constants) or
d a a
n n

1
with
a a
1
describe the same sequence which is called an
arithmetic sequence. An advanced example is the sequence
{ }
n
u
where n
u
denote the number of no match of n diferent objects. The recursion
formula is
( ) ( )
2 1
1
+
+
n n n
u u n u
with
0 , 1
1 0
u u
while the explicit formula is

MONOTONICITY OF A SEQUENCE
A sequence
{ }
n
a
is said to be monotonically increasing
( ) MI
if
n n
a a >
+1
for all n and is said to monotonically decreasing
( ) MD
if
n n
a a <
+1
for all n. A sequence is said to be non monotonic if it is neither MI nor MD.
For example the sequence
1 +

n
n
a
n
is MI,
n
a
n
1

is MD while n
n
n a
1

is non-
2

monotonic note that the n
n
n a

is MD if
3 n
. (follows by showing that
corresponding real function
x
x
1
is monotonically decreasing in
( ) , 3
and
1 lim

).
The advanced examples for MI, MD and non monotonic sequence are

BOUNDEDNESS OF A SEQUENCE
A sequence
{ }
n
a
is said to be bounded if
k a
n
<
for all natural
numbers n. For example the sequence
n a
n
sin
is bounded since
1 <
n
a
for all n. The sequence
n
n

,
_

+
1
1 is bounded since 3

1 2 <
,
_

+
n
n
. The
sequence
n
n
1
is also bounded since
2
1
<
n
n
for all n.
CONVERGENCE OF A SEQUENCE
A sequence
{ }
n
a
is said to be convergent if
n
n
a

lim
exist. If the
sequence diverges to . If a sequence neither diverges to nor tends to a
limit, it is said to be oscillatary. For example
n a
n
sin
is oscillatary. There
is a remarkable theorem in mathematical analysis which states that every
bounded monotonic sequence is convergent.

(ii) If
( ) n f
is a sequence then the function
( ) x f
(where x is in some
subset of real numbers) may difer from
( ) n f
in various ways. For
example range of the sequence
n sin
is the set
{ } ... , 3 sin , sin , 1 sin
while range of the function
x sin
is
[ ] 1 , 1
.
( ) x f

sense.

then
n a

n

which clearly proves that n

diverges to .
(iv) At times the monotonicity of a sequence can be proved by proving
the monotonicity of corresponding real function by using
diferentiable functions. For example
( )
x
x x f
1

is MD in
( ) , e
which
implies ... 5 4 3

( ) , ... , 5 , 4 , 3 e
otherwise a
monotonicity is proved by showing

(v) If
{ }
n
a
is MI and converges to l then
1 <
n

for all n.

3 2 1 n
a a a a

is a series. A series is fnite or infnite according as the
number of terms in the corresponding sequence is fnite of infnite.
PROGRESSIONS
It is not that the terms of a sequence always follow a certain pattern
or they are described by some explicit formula for the nth term. Those
sequence whose terms follow certain pattern are called progressions.
i.e., (i) 2, 4, 6, 28 (ii) 2, 6, 18, 54, 1458 (iii) 1, 8, 27, 64,
ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION (A.P.)
A sequence whose terms increase or decrease by a fxed number is
called an arithmetic progression. The fxed number is called the common
diference of the A.P.

SUMMATION OF SERIES
Finding the summation of series is not always possible in algebra.
The summation of only limited class of series can be found. We can fnd the

To fnd nth term
n

of a series we frst of all fnd the diference of
successive terms. If it a constant then the series is an AP and the sum is
determined by usual formula. In case these diference are not constant

OTHER CASES OF SUMMATION
Method of diferences: We have already described the method of
diference when nth term is a polynomial in n. The method of diference
may work out in general. In this method we try to express nth term n
T
as
a diference of two terms. Suppose we want the sum of the series
n
u u u u + + + + ...
3 2 1 . We try to express n
U
as a diference of two terms.
If
n n n
v v u
+1
, then
ln ...
1 1
u u u + + +
( ) ( ) ( )

... v v v v v v v v
n n n

.
Thus 1 1

+ .
At times we do partial fractions by hit and trial by expressing the
numerator as a diference of extreme terms. For instance we want to fnd
the sum of the series
