BSED-II

THE INCUBATOR BOY
Closed in a room, my imagination becomes the universe, and the rest of the world is
missing out.
A pre-mature baby boy was born on July 16, 1989. It was like the angels sprinkled gold
dust in his hair. Yet, he was so small that his family was thinking if he could survive. He weighed
only 2.2 kilograms. He was placed in an incubator and was left in the hospital for a month to
become better. It was heart -breaking for his mother but she had no choice because her baby
needed it. She wanted to hug him and hold his little hands but the only thing she could do was
stare at her small little angel. After a month, the baby was discharged; it was a heavenly
moment for a mother and child to be finally together. Just when the family was enjoying their
delightful time with their angel, he faced another challenge. He was diagnosed with an
umbilical hernia and had to go an elective surgery.
Growing up as a kid, his mother noticed that he was aloof. He doesnt want going to
places with throngs of strangers. He seldom went out of the house. When visitors came to their
house, he tends to just stay in his room until the visitors left. He had a sister who was one year
older than him, they were only two siblings. One of the most vivid memories of his mother
about him was during his first day of school as Kindergarten. He threw tantrums showing hate
at his mother for sending him to that crowded place. Right then, his mother had decided to pull
his daughter out from Grade 1 and enrolled her in Kindergarten as the boys only condition for
continuing school.
At school, he didnt make best friends. His sister was his best buddy. He refused joining
camps if his sister would not go, like Boy Scout camp. Sometimes, when he really needed to join
a particular activity, his sister was forced to join, too for him. He was very silent yet he topped
their class. He was a simple boy you would never find roaming around the classroom even at
free times. He just stayed in his chair with his notebook. His hobby was drawing and watching
TV. He could watch TV the whole day if he was lesson-free.
When they had to go to college, he was very sad when his sister didnt make it in the
University of the Philippines, Los Baos. So, whether they like it or not, he would not just study
but live there alonefar from his family that he used to live with for 16 years. The day he left
home was heart-breaking. To him, it was stepping into the new chapter of his life. He was
entering into a place filled with strangers alone. For his mother, it felt like they were losing a
child, for his sister, it felt like he was losing his best friend. After he left, their home was
somber. It took time for them to accept that had to happen. It was for their sons future and
besides, he really had to get out of his shell.
He had to live in a boarding house. There, he had to be with four roommates. After a
week, he called his mother to come into his boarding house saying he wanted to leave. He said
his roommates were loud and disturbing. His mother hurriedly came to his son. Then, he
transferred him to a boarding house where he could be solo in the room. It satisfied him. He
stayed there until he finished college.
One memorable moment in his college life was during their Recognition Day before
Graduation Day. He told his family to come because all graduating students will be given a
Certificate of Recognition for making it until the end. On that very moment when they were
sitting on their chairs waiting for the ceremony to start, he handed them the Program of
Activities. They were indeed astounded when they found his name under the list of Cum
Laudes. Asked why he didnt tell them beforehand, he answered that its a surprise. It was an
elating moment! His family were very proud of their incubator boy!
Right after graduation, he was hired as an Instructor in UPLB. He also passed the board
exam for Electrical Engineers. Now, while teaching, he was taking his Masters Degree in the
University of the Philippines, Diliman campus.
He may have gone far but he remained a very reserved person. He still hates noise. He
gets irritated at people talking loudly in public transportations. He hates when his neighbor
sings in videoke until dawn. Asked where he got that attitude, his opinion was that maybe he
developed this personality when he had been left alone in the incubator for a month during his
early days. He may not be tactful to other people, but to his sister whom he considered as
someone he could never be afraid of talking, he was such a bully, mean, joker and a free
person.
This boy who is always closed in a room where his imagination becomes the universe is
my beloved brother. Its such a pride being his sister.
