The International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September
10th 1963. IFI remains the only global voice and authority for professional Interior Architects/Designers. The Federation
represents 270,000 designers, educators and industry stakeholders in 110 countries (IFI Articles of Association, 2011).

The objectives of the IFI are to advocate for the profession of interior design/architecture, raise the standards of the
practice, improve designers contributions to society and culture, initiate efforts connected to healthy, safety, and
wellbeing of all, to promote sustainability, and to foster design policies meant to improve the quality of life (IFI website,
2014). To implement these objectives IFI adopted a declaration developed by the global community on February 17
th
and
18
th
, 2011 in New York City and abide by all goals in the declaration. The declaration can be seen at

The IFI members consist of professional members, provisional members, educational members, corporate members,
promotional members, governmental member or an institutional members. All members go through an admissions
process before being accepted. 63 countries are now members of IFI. The IFI has Canadian representation on its board
and the Headquarters are in Montreal, Quebec.

The IFI is led an Executive Board that consists of a President, Past-President and President-Elect and four to six other
members. The Executive Board is supported by the Advisory Council of Past Presidents and the International Strategic
Advisory Council. The Board is in charge of daily conduct of IFI; the execution of the resolutions, the annual report, the
accounting services, organization of meetings, publication, administration, archives and appointment of a legal advisor.
Executive Committee, 4 people, the President, the President-Elect, a Past President and the Secretary General. The
Committee executes the day-to-day conduct of business between board meetings and meet as frequently as desired but
no less than twice a year at head office, in Montreal, Quebec, or any other location decided by the Committee. Finally,
there is a General Assembly once a year to discuss current issues in the industry and about IFI. The members of the
board are international members with professional backgrounds in the industry either at an educational institution or
practicing in the profession. Right now there is one Canadian member, Trevor Kruse, who is the Founder and Principal of
Hudson Kruse Design.

The IFI contributes to society by hosting a Global Interiors Education Open Forum (GIEOF) interior educators from IFI
member nations in the Asia Pacific region gathered in Sydney Australia on 3-4 October for the IFI GIEOF DFIE Asia
Region Interiors Education Symposium.

As a continuation of IFIs Design Frontiers Interiors Entity (DFIE) global project, the Design For Life Symposium aimed to
explore the IFI Interiors Declaration in relation to interior design/interior architecture education and its impacts on future
practice and research in the Asia Pacific Region and beyond.
