The Bomb Squad consists of
bomb techs, robots, & explosive
detection dogs.

Live Fire Training Facility
The four story, 17-room, Live
Fire Training Building that is
specially constructed to allow
repeated live fre training
evolutions without structural
damage to the facility. The
Draeger Maze, used to train
frefghters to do search and
rescue, is also in this building.
Outdoor Classroom
Provides portable seating
for students. Safety briefngs
and various exercises may be
conducted at this location.
Dumpster/Rack Prop
Used to demonstrate how to
handle dumpster fres as well
as fre in storage racks, such
as those found in warehouses.
Confned Space Rescue
Training Prop
Designed to simulate a typical
confned space, which may
be found beneath a paved
surface, but will also be used for
rescue training in any space.
Vehicle Extrication
Using salvage cars as
props, students are able to
practice using the Jaws of
Life to simulate extricating
passengers from a vehicle.
Flashover Simulator
Prop
Demonstrates the warning
signs of imminent fashover
in a controlled atmosphere
to frefghters conducting
interior fre attack.
Car Fire Prop
Introduces frefghters
to the hazards that
may be encountered in
handling vehicle fres.
Extinguisher Area
Used to instruct students in the
proper use of fre extinguishers,
and using fammable gas
to simulate electrical fres
and fammable liquids.

Four rooms used as fre
scenes to train investigators.
Roof Prop
A simulation of a normal house
roof using standard plywood
and roof shingles yet close to
the ground in order to be used
as a training tool without the
danger of height involved.
Training Tower
A six-story structure that
is used for ladder, stair,
hose, and rope training.
Sprinkler lab on 1st foor.
Flammable Gas
Training Area
Provides an opportunity
for students to be exposed
to frefghting techniques
involving three types of
fammable and/or cryogenic
liquids and gases: liquefed
petroleum gas, liquefed
natural gas, and natural gas.
Water Recovery and
Treatment System
Inasmuch as the use of water
is a major part of our training,
we are continuing with our
recycling efforts with a water
recovery and treatment system
that is capable of capturing,
treating, and recycling up
to 75% of the water that
is used for training.

fter three years of construction,
the Department of Fire Services
Stow facility is now complete.
The new DFS provides offce and
training space for: the Mass. Firefghting
Academy (MFA) staff and instructors,
the Fire Safety Division; the MA State
Police members of the Fire Investigation
and Bomb Squad; the Hazardous
Materials Response Unit; the Special
Operations Unit; and other agency-wide
administrative support people in fscal,
human resources, information technology
and facilities.
