LEVEL I CPTED CERTIFICATE COURSE

1.0 Goals

The goal of this basic Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
course, is to provide the participant with a solid, practical, working knowledge of
CPTED and;
To provide the successful participant with the necessary skills and
knowledge to become actively involved in the planning, design and/or
development process as it relates to preventing crime and nuisance
behaviour through the incorporation of CPTED design strategies.
To understand the direct relationship between the physical environment
and crime.
To create awareness of the relationship between design professionals,
municipalities and CPTED practitioners in creating safer, more productive
environments.

1.1 Strategies

The course instructor will present subjects in classroom and field trip settings,
utilizing audio, visual and site inspection techniques and experiences. The bulk of
participant learning will be done in a "hands on" manner, utilizing individual and
syndicate projects.

Projects and a written test will provide the participant with the opportunity to
demonstrate his/her understanding of course objectives. Daily case study
assignments will prepare participants for the main syndicate project at the end of
the course.

This final project will utilize all principals of CPTED, urban planning, architectural
and landscape design and land use. Syndicates will be assigned local real world
sites and asked to provide design recommendations for reducing crime and
nuisance behaviour along with future plans for development.

Each syndicate will make an in-class presentation on the final day.
Presentations will be critiqued and evaluated by classmates and course
instructor. Successful participants will be issued with a Level I CPTED Certificate.

Some evening work is involved in Level I CPTED Course. Evening work can be
accomplished according to participants availability.

Level I Basic CPTED Course is a pre-requisite for those wishing to take the
