Location Complete
For my A2 film studies project portfolio, following a textual analysis, I have produced
planning materials in order to help me proceed towards creating a short film, which will be
ideal particularly for my target audience. Alongside my essay, script and synopsis, I will be
using location notes which will make it easier for me to know what will be taking place at
each location during filming sessions.
Location 1 Bedroom
The prime location that will be used for my short film is a bedroom. This is because, my main
protagonist is a young male named jay who has freshly broken up from a long term
relationship with a young female named Ellie. As he is currently single and alone, I thought
using a bedroom would be the ideal location for majority of scenes taking place. There is a
double bed located in the middle of the room, which Jay will be positioned on when
introducing his character. The use of a double bed will instantly provide the audience with
ideas of being with a partner, having his own house or currently living with someone, as the
presentation of the room will create verisimilitude for all viewers. As well as this, the room
has great lighting, as well as curtains which means that I have the opportunity to adjust the
lighting in the room, using natural light from outside surroundings or via closing curtains and
using a light bulb. The bedroom is an important location, as it will be used most during the
entire film, as Jay will be reminiscing back on his previous relationship. I will be using a
variety of shots such as extreme close up shots, medium/long shots for example, to illustrate
Josephs actions as well as using non-diegetic sound to portray his emotions in a more clear
form. The fact that the room is mainly cream colour, will present a more calming
atmosphere as well as making the room more lighter, making it easier for me to film.
Location 2 Kitchen
My second selected location is a kitchen, which is very ideal for the flash back, which will be
occurring whilst Jay flicks through his scrapbook/album. The kitchen will be used whilst Jay
and will have their romantic meal together, as she will be feeding him with food. The spacing
of the kitchen will enable me to film in a number of different shots and angles, making my
short film look more appealing. With the incorporation of cinematography, I will use a sum
of camera shots varying from shot reverse and medium shots to wide and extreme close up
shots. By using this shot in particular, it will show her body language towards planning the
evening as well as giving the viewers an idea of her surroundings and what will be taking
place. Following this, extreme close up shots will be used to show her activities and details
of the food and layout of the table, making it obvious to the audience that the scene is
reflecting on a romantic genre. This will be creating a positive outlook on their relationship
showing that both protagonists are at good terms with each other as well as exaggerating
the level of effort put in to her meal to provide him with happiness. For the involvement of
sound, I will be using diegetic dialogue as Ellie will mention I love you so much, creating
suspense for the audience from her tone of voice. Overall, I have chosen this location to
demonstrate the contrast of Ellies behavior as a female and how it highlights the change in
representation of women in contemporary films to reflect back on my textual analysis and
how the directors used the convention in their films as well as differentiating the difference
of actions in my own remake of the production.
Location 3 Hallway
Another location in which I believe will play an important part within my film is the hallway.
This is because this is the scene that illustrates Jay running to his room whilst Ellie follows
him. I will be involving extreme close up shots as well as camera movement, tracking, to
follow Jay and Ellie. By doing this, it will show the audience how both characters are feeling
in that moment as well as building up tension for the viewers. For the involvement of
sound, my objective is to use diegetic sound of the characters running. With the use of
lighting, I will be filming with natural lighting, to portray a sense of pathetic phalacy, as the
weather is fairly cold with dark lighting, reflecting on the atmosphere. This will also show the
contrast of the previous flashbacks, as they delivered a cool positive atmosphere, mirroring
on the romantic gesture between the two characters and showing that the representation of
women has altered over time as the female character is the individual that cheats.
Location 4 Living room
My final chosen location is the living room. I will be using this room whilst presenting one of
the flashbacks Jay has whilst looking at the scrapbook. The living room scenes will consist of,
firstly, watching a film whilst eating popcorn together, and secondly, both characters sitting
on the living room floor, spending time with each other whilst eating Haribo love heart
sweets. I will be using a variety of shots such as a medium and long shot, to show their
actions towards one another. I will also be using focus and out of focus on the camera to
focus on particular subjects such as the love heart sweets reflecting on their relationship and
its stability, not revealing to the audience that Ellie has cheated. I will be using non diegetic
sound as well as diegetic sound to set the mood of the scene. Whilst editing I may switch the
effects to black and white to show that it is a flashback representing the past as well as
differentiating both past and present and the contrast of character roles in contemporary
film.
Overall, I chose these four locations in particular, as they will all provide my short film with a
realistic and effective view for the audience.
