5or a bookstore to remain successful, it must improve >the e?perience of buying books,@
says le? 7ifschut=, an architect whose 7ondon<based practice is designing the new
5oyles. 'e suggests an array of approaches; >small, 0uiet spaces cocooned with booksA
larger spaces where one can dwell and readA other larger but still intimate spaces where
one can hear talks from authors about books, literature, science, travel and cookery.B The
atmosphere is vital, he adds. 6?teriors must bu== with activity, entrances must be full of
eye<catching presentations
2.!- 4ser C'aracteristics
5 6very user should be;
5 2omfortable of working with computer.
5 'e must also have basic knowledge of 6nglish
2.%- Constraints
5 G18 is only in 6nglish.
5 7ogin and password is used for identification of user and there is no facility for guest.
2.&- De0initions o0 ro#le,s
+roblems with conventional system are C
3
2.&.1- Manual s$ste,
The manual system of performing a task is often more complicated and time consuming
whereas if the same system is automated the time factor and complications are reduced to
a great e?tent.
2.&.2- Lac2 o0 i,,ediate retrievals
The information is very difficult to retrieve and to find particular information 7ike C 6.g.
< To find out about the different books by same author or other books in same category
the user has to search a number of websites or bookstores .This results in inconvenience
and wastage of time.
2.&.!- .rice and selection
The major disadvantage of buying books through physical stores is that we cannot always
have the complete range of books to select also the price of a book can vary from to shop.
2.&.%- C'an+in+ *etailers
nother disadvantage of physical bookstore is that it not always easy to switch suppliers
and vendors.
2.(- Alternative Solutions
2.(.1- I,roved Manual S$ste,
-ne of the alternative solutions is the improvement of the manual system.
nything, which can be done by using automated methods, can be done manually.
utomation reduces the manpower re0uirement of a particular company.
4
2.(.2- 3etter selection and .rice +uarantee
-ne advantage of shopping online is being able to 0uickly seek out deals for items or
services provided by many different vendors. !hipping costs "if applicable& reduce the
price advantage of online merchandise, though depending on the jurisdiction, a lack
of sales ta6 may compensate for this.
2.(.!- *etailers
dvantage of online bookstore is that it is always easy to switch suppliers and vendors
without changing the e?perience of customers.
!. "easi#ilit$ Stud$
The highlights of the feasibility analysis are;
!.1- Tec'nical "easi#ilit$
The -nline .ookstore is feasible technically, although there is some risk. -nline
.ookstore risk regarding familiarity with 8nternet order applications is high.
9 The Marketing Department has little e?perience with 8nternet<based marketing and
sales.
9 The 8T Department has strong knowledge of the company:s e?isting order systemsA
however, it has not worked with Web<enabled order systems.
9 'undreds of retailers that have 8nternet -rder applications e?ist in the Market place
-nline .ookstore risk regarding familiarity with the technology is medium.
D
9 The 8T Department has relied on e?ternal consultants and an 8nternet !ervice +rovider
to develop its e?isting Web environment.
9 The 8T Department has gradually learned about Web systems by maintaining the current
Web site.
9 Development tools and products for commercial Web application development are
available in the marketplace, although the 8T department has little e?perience with them.
9 2onsultants are readily available to provide help in this area.
The project si=e is considered medium risk ;<
9 The project team likely will include less than * people.
9 .usiness user involvement will be re0uired.
The compatibility with -nline .ookstore e?isting technical infrastructure should be good.
9 The current -rder !ystem is a client<server system built using open standards.
n interface with the Web should be possible.
9 /etail stores already place and maintain orders electronically.
9 n 8nternet infrastructure already is in place at retail stores and at the corporate
head0uarters.
9 The 8!+ should be able to scale their services to include a new -rder !ystem.
E
!.2- Econo,ic "easi#ilit$
costCbenefit analysis was performed conservative approach shows that the 8nternet
-rder !ystem has a good chance of adding to the bottom line of the company
significantly.
8ntangible 2osts and .enefits ;<
9 8mproved customer satisfaction
9 Greater brand recognition
!.!- Or+ani7ational "easi#ilit$
5rom an organi=ational perspective, this project has low risk. The objective of the system,
which is to increase sales, is aligned well with the senior Management:s goal of
increasing sales for the company. The move to the 8nternet also aligns with Marketing:s
goal to become savvier in 8nternet Marketing and sales. The users of the system, 8nternet
consumers, are e?pected to appreciate the benefits of -nline .ookstore Web presence.
nd, management in the retail stores should be willing to accept the system, given the
possibility of increased sales at the store level.
