The Rise of m-Commerce

Mobile Commerce, or m-Commerce, is about the explosion of

applications and services that are becoming accessible from
Internet-enabled mobile devices. It involves new
technologies, services and business models. It is quite
different from traditional e-Commerce.
What is M-Commerce?
"Mobile Commerce is any transaction, involving the transfer
of ownership or rights to use goods and services, which is
initiated and/or completed by using mobile access to
computer-mediated networks with the help of an electronic
device."

According to Recent Survey:
“Mobile commerce is gaining momentum as consumers get comfortable
with ordering all sorts of products by cell phone and companies such as
Papa John's watch sales climb. Much recent m-commerce growth can be
traced to eBay and Amazon.com, which last year accounted for about 70%
of all mobile sales of physical goods. In September, eBay said its iPhone
application alone facilitated $380 million in sales this year.” – Business
Week.
“A report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India titled 'Mobile
Value-Added Services in India' projects that the mobile VAS sector (of
which m-commerce is a part) is expected to grow from Rs 5,780 cr (June
2008) to Rs 16,520 cr in June 2010 as a direct benefit of the growth in
mobile telephony.”
Why M-Commerece is getting so much of attention?
• Consumers are changing their behavior and
expectations with regard to shopping and brand loyalty.

• Businesses are changing the way they do business.

• Mobile phones are enabling these changes to happen

on a global scale.

M-Commerce brings incremental opportunities to any small or large
business. As the mobile communications industry continues to grow at an
astronomical rate, retailers, e-commerce merchants, banks and utility
companies need to take advantage of this opportunity to incrementally
increase their revenue streams with this growing sector. This will help to:

Mobile Commerce: towards personalization
• Permission-based: unlike the interruption model that characterizes
television advertising, direct mail and other forms of mass
marketing, consumers need to give their permission before being
marketed to.
• Targeted: by agreeing to share information about themselves and
their buying habits, consumers allow businesses to improve the
relevancy of the offers they send out.
• “Live”: because of the nature of mobile phones, responses can be
processed to give realtime visibility of reaction to specific offers.
• Two-way: using mobile devices, consumers can not only respond to
offers but also request specific types of information or interest (for
example, offers related to a brand or a category) as well as sharing
information with their peers.

Checkout System on Mobile Commerce
Payments: How It Works

• Billing tethered to your phone bill

• The telecoms take 20%+ cut from payment
vendors
• Billing through your cell phone bill is capped
at $50 or $100, depending on the company
• Payment vendors are working on upping this
• For now, it restricts most payment vendors to
small payments, social games, e-gifts, prizes
Text Message as ATM
• You can coordinate payments
through text messages
• Text messages can include
hyperlinks to the checkout
page
• Requires a Smartphone (or
that you paste the hyperlink
from your non-Smartphone
later on)
• Billing links have a 10-50%
conversion depending on the
business (50% for social
gaming)
