Magic Equation r1 (All Codes)

The document presents "Magic Equations" developed by Sh. R.G. Gupta for the design of reinforced concrete columns according to Indian, British and ACI codes. The equations simplify the cumbersome column design process. Examples are provided applying the equations to short rectangular, circular and L-shaped columns. Experts are requested to review the equations and provide comments to help revolutionize not just column design but all structures subject to moments. Sh. Gupta hopes this will greatly benefit structural engineers.

Development of Magic Equation for Column design by

Sh.R.G. Gupta, Superintending Engineer(Retd.)/DDA

Since time immemorial, the design of column has been a challenge to Structural Engineers because of its cumbersome,
complicated and time consuming nature. The method of design has also changed from time to time. The working stress method used
in early 1970s was improved to ultimate design which remained in vogue from early 1970s to 1980s. Finally came the limit state
approach which is being followed till today. In the working stress method the curves as given in reinforced concrete design handbook
by R. Chandra and R. Narayan published in the year 1967 were used. For ultimate stress design charts given in Torsteel Handbook by
R. Chandra were used for a long time and finally came the limit stage design.
Now, the undersigned has developed some equations based on basic fundamental principles which simplifies very much
this arduous column design. You are requested to give your valuable comments on these, so that these may be utilised by the structural
engineers.
The basic fundamental principles adopted in the development of these equations will be disclosed at an
appropriate time and place in a presentable format, if appreciated by EXPERTS.

Here I would like to mention that these Equations have been developed for Indian ,British and ACI Codes having their respective
different codal provisons for design stress and partial safety factors of concreate and steel. Now the examples are being given for
the generation of these equations through EXCEL for short RCC columns of different shapes like Rectangular Circular and L-shape
based on mainly two parameters based on concreate and steel ,Experts are requested to interrect directly with the undersigned.
I HOPE THIS WILL BRING A REVOLUTION NOT ONLY IN THE FIELD OF RCC COLUMNS BUT ALSO
ALL STRUCTURES PRONE TO MOMENTS.
