Learning and development in a knowledge setting

Introduction
This module provides an overview of learning issues in a knowledge environment.
Figure 8-1 was introduced in Module 1 and has been represented here to show the
concepts related to learning organisations that are covered in this module.

Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to:

describe the learning principles that should operate in a knowledge environment

outline how holistic developmental support can be provided

identify strategies to help develop social capital

discuss the mechanisms that can encourage knowledge leadership capabilities

describe how project and problem-based learning needs can be supported

Learning in a knowledge environment

Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 245-252

Learning is a constant requirement within a knowledge-intensive workplace.

However, building a learning culture in busy workplaces can be difficult. Three terms
used to reflect the different ways people grow and adapt are: training, learning and
development.

Training is the way people develop job-related competencies (skills and

knowledge) under the guidance of an expert.

Learning is the term given to the changes in skills, knowledge or abilities that
result from one or more experiences such as training, experimentation, applied
activities, reflection and abstraction.

Development is the ongoing process of change and growth.

Note table 10.1 which describes some common forms of effective workplace
learning.
Figure 10-1 shows some factors that affect organisational learning and development.
These factors are grouped into organisational, individual, operational and the learning
context.

Creating a holistic developmental approach

Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 252-254

Learning and development is an ongoing activity in a knowledge organisation.

Organisations need to provide support for learning at every stage in an employees
career.

Developing social capital

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 254-255

Learning and development in a knowledge setting

Relationships are important to knowledge sharing and exploration. Communities of

Practice (COP) are important groups for building trust in relationships and COPs help
people develop necessary skills and expertise.
One-on-one relationships, team membership and communities of practice are all
important elements that help build social capital.

Developing knowledge leadership capabilities

Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 255-257

Leadership development is seen by many organisations as important to achieving

successful outcomes.
Some ways of leadership development are:
Modelling used for knowledge management leadership
Shadowing where an individual observes a leader close at hand
Coaching provides feedback and guidance
Mentoring a cheaper guiding mechanism. The mentor and mentee meet together
regularly to share issues and discuss strategies.

Project-based learning
Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 257-258

Section L05 describes project-based learning. Projects are finite activities that
require a number of individuals to contribute their specialist knowledge in a
collaborative manner to achieve a number of targeted outcomes (Debowski 2006,
p. 257).

Working with technology

Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 258-262

Information technology plays an important supporting role in knowledge

management. There are three types of technology users: novice users, empowered
users, and expert users.
Technological literacy is the capacity to analyse, apply and manage technological
processes.
Note the section on evaluating user competencies on page 261.

Building a comprehensive knowledge

development strategy
Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 262-263

There needs to be a well-managed approach to learning for knowledge organisations

to use the term learning organisation. Knowledge development needs to be nurtured
and supported through both central and local strategies.
Figure 10.3 summarises some of the issues which should be considered when
building a developmental strategy.

Planning for individual development

Textbook

Debowski 2006
Ch. 10, pp. 263-265

A range of strategies can be applied for regular learning and development in

organisations. Three effective approaches are: career planning, goal setting, and
performance development reviews.

Conclusion
Now that you have completed this module, turn back to the objectives at the
beginning of the module. Have you achieved these objectives?
Complete the following activities.
Activity 8-1
Complete discussion questions 10.2, 10.3, 10.6, and 10.7.

Activity 8-2
Imagine you are a project leader in a knowledge organisation. You have a new
project team of ten individuals with diverse skills and very mixed personalities; some
are highly technical and introspective, and others are very social and interactive.
Company experience of members ranges from 6 months to 15 years. The group will
be operating in a virtual mode for 6 months, with an occasional get-together to
review progress. Describe ways the project teams learning needs may be supported.
