Aviat 'S Recommendation For XPD Value

1. The document discusses XPD (cross polarization discrimination) value and the XPIC (cross polarization interference cancellation) function. It addresses several customer queries about measuring and achieving the proper XPD value in the field. 2. Typical dual polarized antennas exhibit XPD values between 30-40dB, with high performance antennas at 30dB and purpose-designed antennas at 40dB. The minimum XPD value to achieve in the field is 25dB. 3. XPD can be measured using the diagnostic performance screen but any improvement from the XPIC function is additional to the measured value. The recommended range to adjust the XPD value in the field is between 25-35dB.

Recommendation
for XPD Value
Standard XPD Value & XPIC Function

Aviat Networks

Customer queries regarding XPD Value & AVIATs Response:

1. Should XPD value in field be equal to as per mentioned in the link budget?

Its the XPD fade Margin Multipath value mentioned in the link budget which is the
hypothetical value of fade margin in XPIC links and this value is not the XPD value of the dual
pole antennas to be achieved in field.

2. What is the XPD value of a typical Dual Polarized antenna?

High performance shielded antennas typically exhibit 30 dB cross polarization discrimination
whereas 40 dB is typical for purpose-designed, high polarization discrimination antennas.

3. How can we measure XPD value?

The received-signal V and H discrimination can be checked using the Diagnostics > Performance
screen. The XPOL discrimination entry measures the V and H signal discrimination in dB at the
input to the XPIC RAC (from the antenna feeds).

4. Is it the same value of XPD provided by XPIC function of RAC?

Any improvement in signal discrimination provided by the RAC XPIC function is in addition to
this measurement which we receive from alignment of feed horn or see in portal as XPOL
discrimination.

5. What should be the Minimum XPD value to be adjusted/achieved in the field?

The horizontal-to-vertical receive signal discrimination (XPD) for satisfactory XPIC operation
should not be less than 25 dB

6. What should be the Maximum XPD value to be adjusted/achieved in the field?

The XPD should never read higher than the XPD specification of the antennas, which for most
high performance dual-pol antennas will be between 30 dB to 35 dB.

7. If XPD value is adjusted at 25 dB or compromising 5 dB of C/I value will affect a link?

No, XPD of 25 dB is the design specification requirement measured from RSL

Any improvement in signal discrimination provided by the RAC XPIC function is in addition to
this measurement (20 dB XPD improvement)
So with measured XPD at 25 dB, the resultant XPD improvement with RAC XPIC function will
be 45 dB
That will be sufficient for typical co-channel C/I specification of 30Db

8. What should be the range of XPD value to be adjusted/achieved in the field?

Range for XPD value to be adjusted in the field is recommended as between 25 to 35 dB or 5

dB the actual value of dual pole antenna i.e. is 30 dB.
As mentioned in below picture, the minimum range or value of XPD is marked at 25 dB and
upper value as 35 dB and the expected value to be achieved is somewhere in between 25 to 35
dB.
