5 - Piston Mechanical Cad Model. 6 - Piston Mechanical Event Simulation

The tutorials taught the student how to model and simulate the mechanical behavior of a piston using finite element analysis. In the first tutorial, the student learned how to create a CAD model of the piston, including generating a solid mesh and adding joints. The second tutorial covered applying material properties, constraints, and a prescribed rotation to simulate piston motion over one revolution. Analyzing the von Mises stress results showed highest stress occurs at the crank. The student proposed applying this analysis to study stress on a backhoe digger during operation.

5 Piston Mechanical Cad Model.

6 Piston Mechanical Event Simulation.
1. What did you learn from this tutorial?
From these tutorial, I have learnt how to do the simulation of the piston mechanical. There
are two tutorial involved in this simulation process. The first tutorial is we need to follow
simple steps of piston mechanical cad model before proceed to the next tutorial which is
piston mechanical event simulation. In first tutorial, we need to generate a solid mesh of
the model within the absolute mesh size. The size that we use for this model is 0.5. the the
surface will look like brick-shaped. Then Ive learnt how to create the joint between the
piston and arm. We need to joint them to allow the parts to rotate about the centerline of
the joint. The model will be recoloured according to the surface numbers. When the
achieve was first opened, the colors were based on the part numbers. After that, I can
create the joint between the arm and crank. After adding the joint, the piston mechanical
CAD model is now completed.

From second tutorial which is piston mechanical event simulation, Ive learnt that I
need to select diameter 1 in2 as a cross-sectional area field first. This area is arbitary
and is intended only to provide a relatively rigid joint. The I have learnt how to choose
the suitable material properties for the model. In this tutorial, Aluminium 6061T6;6061-T651 and Steel (AISI 4130) had been chosen. Then I know to apply
constraints to the piston and crank. Then apply a prescribed rotation to the joint at the
free end of the crank that will go through one revolution in 1 second. We need to
apply X, Y, and Z translational and Y and Z rotational constraints to the large
cylindrical surfaces of the piston. X translational constraints were applied to all
surfaces of the crank. Besides, specify an event capture rate of 36. This will produce
results for every 10 degrees of crank rotational ( 360/36 = 10 ). After that, the model
will be analyze. For a better results view, review the displacement results. The von
Mises stress results are displayed by default. I know that the differences of coloured is
accordings to its maximum and minimum stress that acts on the computer case. . The
result of the simulation of the piston can be seen from the figure 2 below.

2. How can you apply this tutorial to a real world problem?

In my opinion, this tutorial can be applied to a real world problem if we know the
steps to do the simulation for different type of object. This tutorial will guide us to
solve simple problems regarding on how to identify the stress on the object and how to
apply force on the object. There are many kind of problems that can be solved by
using this tutorial such as the analysis of the syringe and the stress that involved in the
force that act at the end of an object and also the backhoe that use the same concept of
the piston.

3. Propose a simple real world problem where you can use finite element analysis
similar to the analysis type done in the tutorial. ( Use sketches, figures, notes etc
to explain your proposal.)
A simple real world problem that can use finite element analysis same as computer
case analysis in this tutorial is backhoe. The mechanism concept of backhoe is same as
analysis type done in the tutorial. Backhoe has the digger that use piston concepts. So
the foces need to be applied at the end of the backhoe. Both backhoe and piston have
their joint at the middle (more or less) of the backhoe and the piston. So, we absolutely
can see the similar analysis and characteristic between both of them.

4. Explain the result obtained from these tutorial. ( Include figures and analysis of
the figures.)

At the end of the first part, the object should be exactly looks like the figure below.

Figure 4 Tutorial 1s result.

At the end of the first tutorial, the effect that we can seen is there are meshed model
with absolute mesh size of 0.5 inch on the surface of the piston. Actually the size of
the mesh on the model surfaces are depends on how much size that we are been using.
To prevent the mesh size bigger than in the tutorial, read the instructions properly.
While doing this tutorial, we can rotate the joint at the free end of the crank that will

go through one revolution in 1 second to check whether the joining step has
successfully follow or not. If it was success, we can easily rotate the crank and
produce results for every 10 degrees of crank rotation (360/36 = 10).

At the end of the second part, the object should be exactly looks like the figure below.

Figure 5- second tutorial result.

The differences of coloured is accordings to its maximum and minimum stress that acts on
the piston. The displacement magnitude value is less in the part towards blue colour. That
means there are forces that applied at the crank. In this the simulation, if our process is
incomplete yet, well straightly failed to run the simulation. If we cant run the simulation,
we didnt get the graph for the crank of piston movement. So, we need to check our steps
back. There must be some steps that we skip or miss during the simulation process.
