GENERAL PRACTITIONER (GP)

1. Eligibility Criteria
In determining the eligibility of an applicant for licensing with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) as
General Practitioner (GP), the applicant must fulfil the following general requirements:
1.1. Primary medical degree awarded after a course of study comprising at least 5,500 hours
(equivalent to four years full time study course) from an approved Medical School listed on
one of the following websites:
1.1.1. The Avicenna Database (formerly the World Health Organization(WHO) directory of

1.2. Successful completion of (one (1) year internship program) that covered different clinical areas
e.g. Medical, Surgical, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
1.3. Recent practice: Applicant shall have recent and more than two (2) years experience in
General practice area prior to application except for the following categories:
1.3.1. A UAE citizen holding a valid UAE passport who has graduated from any recognized
university by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR).
1.3.2. A non-UAE citizen whose mother is UAE citizen who has graduated from a university
in UAE recognized by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research
(MOHESR).
2. Permitted facilities for employment:
2.1. GP may work only in the following healthcare facilities:
2.1.1. Government or Private Hospitals.
2.1.2. Day Surgical Centres.
2.1.3. Polyclinics with three (or more) different medical specialities (excluding dental
specialities) or speciality centres with at least three permanent specialists/consultants in
the same field.
2.1.4. Private clinics located in industrial areas 1
2.1.5. Schools and college clinics.
2.1.6. Construction and labour camp clinics.
2.1.7. Hotel clinics.
2.1.8. Remote and rural areas e.g. Hatta.

Industrial Areas are area designated by Dubai Municipality as industrial regions this includes but not limited to
AlQusais Industrial Area 1,2,3 and 4, Al Qouz Industrial Area 1,2,3 and 4

3. Documents Required:
3.1. Applicants shall upload copies of the following documents via the online licensing system
(Sheryan):
3.1.1. Evidence of successful completion of an approved Medical education program.
3.1.2. Valid license to practice in country of graduation and/or country of last employment (if
available).
3.1.3. Experience letters signed and stamped by the Medical Director or Human Resource
Department
3.1.4. Good Standing Certificate issued by the medical council/association from the country of
last employment (Certificates are only valid for six (6) months from date of issue)2
3.1.5. Valid passport copy
3.1.6. Passport sized coloured photograph.
3.1.7. Evidence of malpractice insurance is required before issuing the license.

Additional documents may be requested by HRD to justify the application for licensure and
registration.

The Health Regulation Department will carry out Primary Source Verification (PSV).
Applicants who knowingly submit falsified documents will be liable for prosecution as per
UAE Federal Law. This would also include termination of the licensure process and/or
revocation of licensure if already issued by DHA.

4. Assessment
4.1. All applicants are required to attend and pass the DHA assessment in order to acquire the
license to practice with the title of 'General Practitioner' in the Emirate of Dubai. For more

4.2. Assessment exemption criteria
4.2.1. Applicants who got a valid license from the following authorities in UAE: Health
Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and Dubai Healthcare City Authority (DHCA).
4.2.2. Applicants who got a valid examination pass-record from the following registration will
be exempt from the DHA licensing assessment. The scope of exemption is limited to
examination requirements and does not apply to any other requirements for licensure.

Not applicable for GP graduates from UAE.

5. Renewal of License
5.1. All GPs are required to renew their professional license annually.
5.2. To renew the professional license the applicant must upload via Sheryan system:
5.2.1. Evidence of completing thirty (30) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
CPD points shall be accredited by one of the DHA recognized accrediting bodies.
5.2.2. Valid malpractice insurance.
