Course Content:
Expectations:
It is expected that students will be able to learn and apply physical chemistry
concepts to biological problems. This includes thermodynamics of
biochemical reactions, binding interactions, and ion/metabolite transport;
electrochemistry with respect to biochemistry in energy production;
properties of solutions and acid-base chemistry. The student should be able
to determine if a biochemical reaction is spontaneous under the specific
conditions and calculate such thermodynamic properties like Enthalpy,
Entropy, free Energy, and equilibrium constant.
Examinations:
Two examinations will be given during the lecture hours on Friday, October
31, 2014 and Friday, November 21, 2014. The final examination will be
comprehensive and will be from 3:30-5:30PM on Tuesday, December 16,
2014. Students are responsible for material discussed in lecture as well as
material contained in the textbook. There will be no make-up exams. If you
miss an exam, you must provide a written, official excuse. There will be no
early or late exams given.
Quizzes:
Grading:
Lowest quiz score will be dropped and quiz total will count towards 15% of
the grade. Each of the one-hour examinations will contribute 25% to the
overall course grade; the Final Exam will count 35%.
