The document discusses defects that can arise in rolled metal products from both the raw material and the rolling process. Some key points: 1) Defects in the raw ingot like pores, cracks or inclusions can remain or worsen during rolling. 2) Surface irregularities in the raw material like scaling can become trapped as laps in the rolled product. Non-metallic inclusions from oxides/nitrides can cause cracks. Internal pores from gases can elongate and weaken the product. 3) Operational defects include barreling from uneven deformation, alligator cracks from inclusions, waviness from uneven roll gaps, and edge cracking from constrained edges during rolling.
