Installation

This chapter describes how to install and begin using the NEXIO XS
NX3600HDX. This chapter includes the following sections:

Rack Mounting

Rack Mounting

Connecting the NX3600HDX

The NX3600HDX comes with the following rack mounting hardware:

Rack slides

Rack extension brackets

The following are installation requirements/recommendations:

Equipment Mount the frame on an appropriate rack using the

provided rack mounting and support equipment.

Power source Connect the power inlet to an adequate power

source. Using a UPS is strongly recommended. Connect each of the
two redundant power supply connections to a separate electrical
circuit for added protection.

Adequate airflow The NEXIO frames require adequate airflow

around the chassis to provide sufficient cooling. All components draw
air in through the front and exhaust via the rear of the frame. The
surfaces must be clear of obstructions to provide proper air circulation
and cooling.

18

Chapter 2
Installation

External device connections Video monitors and all connections

to external devices should be available and in working order.

Cable clearance Provide at least 2 inches of clearance in the rear

of the rack for cabling.

Insure that the rack is anchored to the floor so that it cannot tip
over when the NX3600HDX is extended out of the rack.
To rack mount the NX3600HDX:
1 Remove the chassis rails from the rack slide.
2 Attach a chassis rail to each side of the NX3600HDX frame. The lock on
the chassis rail faces the rear of the frame.
3 Mount the rack slides in the rack. Use the rack rail extension if needed.
4 Extend the rack slides and insert the extending rail into the chassis.
5 Slide the NX3600HDX into the mounted rails until it locks.
6 Press the locks and continue sliding the frame into place.

NX3600HDX (G1)
Rear Panel Port
Descriptions

The following sections describe the NX3600HDX (G1) rear panel port
connections.

Video Ports (G1)

The video ports use BNC connectors for SDI and HD-SDI video and
embedded audio input and output.
Ports can be configured for SMPTE-259M SD or SMPTE-292M HD outputs.
Irrespective of this configuration, SD and HD content can be played
seamlessly back to back on any port.
RECORD 1 (5) IN Supports SDI and HD-SDI input.
RECORD 2 (6) IN Supports SDI input.
PLAY 1 OUT Supports SDI and HD-SDI output.
PLAY 2 OUT Supports SDI and HD-SDI output.
PLAY 3 OUT Supports SDI and HD-SDI output.
PLAY 4 OUT Supports SDI output.
Do not use wire or plastic ties on cables as this can impede cable
performance. Use soft cable ties such as Velcro-based ties for wrapping
cables.
The BNC connectors use coaxial cable to connect devices together. Use
high-quality cable suitable for HD-SDI with the NX3600HDX frame, for
example, the Belden 1694A cable. Cable used for SD and ASI devices may
not be high enough quality.

AES/EBU Audio Ports (G1)

The audio ports use BNC connectors for AES/EBU digital audio input.
RECORD 1 (5) and RECORD 2 (6) Supports a total of 4 channels of
digital audio in per video channel. Each input connector supports one pair
of AES/EBU digital audio.

NEXIO XS NX3600HDX
Installation and User Guide

PLAY 1-4 Supports a total of 4 channels of digital audio per video

channel. Each output connector supports one pair of AES/EBU digital
audio.

VGA (G1)
The NX3600HDX has two available VGA ports. This lets you
simultaneously connect two monitors to the system.
VGA1 is the primary VGA port. VGA2 is optional. If the VGA2 connection
is used, it supports spanning of the desktop or a second simultaneous
instance of the desktop.

Reference Ports (G1)

There are two reference ports on the NX3600HDX back panel. These
reference ports are labeled the following:

REF IN

LOOP

The reference ports use BNC connectors for analog bi-level or tri-level sync
reference connection. A valid reference signal must be applied to the REF
IN port when the system is configured for external sync.
Looping is not recommended. If loop through is not used, terminate with
75 .
Each frame should have its own reference for the source device to ensure
correct timing.
When recording from a satellite feed, apply frame synchronization
hardware between the receiver and the video input channel. The
synchronization hardware and the NEXIO mainframe must be connected
to the house reference.
Referencing the Server System to the House Time Clock (Optional)
Refer to the documentation for your Adrienne AEC Box (NXUSBTC,
NXTC2110, or NXTC2230) for more information on referencing the
NX3600HDX to your house time clock.

GPI Ports (G1)

There are two ports designated for GPI:

GPI IN

GPI OUT

GPI IN Manages 16 GPI inputs for control commands. These can

reference commands including Play, Stop, and Record.
GPI OUT Manages 8 GPI outputs for commands and responses. These
can reference commands and responses including Start, Recue and Next in
Playlist, and RAIDset Error.

Ethernet (G1)
The NX3600HDX is equipped with two Ethernet Interfaces, labeled
Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 2. Both ports are 10/100/1000 Mb capable with
full autonegotiation. The ports may be flexibly used to support NEXIO SAN
communications or FTP based data transfer. Full duplex operation is always
preferred for both networks. Category 5 or 6 cables must be used at
100Mb operation, and Category 5e or 6 cables are required for operation
at 1000 Mb/s.
ETHERNET 1 The following shows the default configuration from the
factory:

Configured as the SAN communications port

Preferred port for Ethernet based automation control

If the IP address of this port is changed, the registry value at

HKCU\Software\ASC Audio Video\LLM\Control\IPAddress must also be
changed to match the new address.
If the subnetmask of this port is changed, the registry value at
HKCU\Software\ASC Audio Video\LLM\Control\IPSubnetMask must also
be changed to match the new mask.
ETHERNET 2 The following shows the default configuration from the
factory:

NEXIO XS NX3600HDX
Installation and User Guide

If the IP address of this port is changed, the registry value at

HKLM\Software\Harris\Archdiag\Settings\HardIP must also be changed to
match the new address.
The following specifications apply for Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 2 when
moving content in and out of a NX3600HDX mainframe:

FTP Server must be running on the NEXIO mainframe that is used to

move clips in and out of the server system.

FTP Server does not need to run on the same NEXIO mainframe that is
hosting the FTP client controlling the transfer process.

FTP sites created for a drive, folder, or mapped drive that are accessed
via Ethernet are created as folder type rather than an FTP server type.

Clips can be transferred to and from any local drive or USB drive,
shared folder, or mapped drive that is accessible by the mainframes
ETHERNET 2 network port or the Windows XP operating system.

For media transfers, the NEXIO FTP Server can move both SD and HD
content in and out of the server system.

NX3600HDX (G2)
MDR Connector
Assembly

This section describes the procedure for assembling a NX3600HDX (G2)

MDR connector.
To assemble a MDR connector:
1 Use a wire stripper to remove approximately 1/16 of the wire insulation
from each of the required conductors (see Figure 5-4).

Figure 5-4 Stripped Wires

2 Solder wire 1 to pin 1 on the connector. To locate pin 1, see Figure 5-5.

Figure 5-5 MDR Connection Pin Locations

Tip:

For optimal results, use a soldering iron with a fine tip. To make a solder
connection from the wire to the solder cup, first flow solder on both the
cable and the cup. Next, use tweezers to locate the wire through the hole
of the solder cup. Then, use the solder iron to flow the solder and make
the connection.
WARNING: Do not push the wire down too far when installing the
wire through the hole in the solder cup or you may cause a short to
the cup.

3 Repeat Step 2 for each connector position.

4 Install the grounding strap to the connector so that the long tab is placed
underneath the connector (see Figure 5-6).
