The Best Car Rental Investigation

You are tasked with summarizing two documents related to choosing the best car rental and sports club payment options using mathematical problem solving and modeling. For the car rental document, you must graph the cost functions, find the intersection points, and answer questions about which company provides the best deal based on mileage. For the sports club document, you must write the payment options as equations, find intersection points, and answer questions about daily versus monthly rates.

The Best Car Rental Investigation

Part A:

The Situation:
You are going to rent a car for a day trip. Your town has two choices of car rental
companies to rent from.
a) ZZ rental charges simply $10 per kilometer driven.
b) Fat Tire Rental charges a $48 fixed fee and then $6 per kilometer driven.

Task:
1) Create a graph using your choice of technology with all of the following:

Graph of all three cost functions.

Label all the intersection points.

Take a screen-shot of this graph with the equations and intersection points
shown
2) Create a document.
It must include the screen shot taken.
Write a narrative that answers all of the following questions. Make sure you
are fully explaining and showing all the necessary working of how you found
the answers.

Select and apply mathematical problem solving techniques to answer

the following questions:
a)

Which rental is best if your trip is for 100 kilometers? Why?

b)

Which is best if you only go 20 kilometers? Why?

c)

Which is the best deal overall? Why?

d)

Which equations did you use for your graph (define the variables and
constants)?

e)

What do the intersection point of your lines represent?

f)

Looking at the equations, can you tell which rental agency will be the most
expensive without looking at the graph? How?

g)

Discuss weather the results make sense in the context of real life situation.

Part B:

The Situation:
You are going to choose a best payment option for using a sports club. There are
two options:
You pay a fixed cost for each of your visits and you pay USD 5 for a
smoothie after your workout.

You pay a monthly rate; you can come as many times as you want. As you
are a member at the sports club, you pay USD 4 for a smoothie at the end
of your workout.

Task
In the document created answer the questions below. Justify and verify the option
chosen using graphs, analyzing the data, and providing clear explanations as
necessary.

Select and apply mathematical problem solving techniques to answer

the following questions:
a) Write down the equations of the two situations given in a slope-intercept form.
Use letters for unknown values. Explain your thinking and define the
variables/parameters.
b) Look up prices for a sports club in Phnom Penh and substitute these into the
formulas. Cite your sources.
c) Find the point of intersection of these lines and explain the meaning of it.
Provide proof for choosing one of the options and justify reasonableness of
your choice.
d) Could the two lines representing the two payment options be parallel?
Interpret the meaning of this situation. Do you think this situation is likely to
happen in real life?
e) Now assume no smoothie are bought.
f)

Use the same monthly rate as you found for part b, but assume that the daily
cost - lets call it A - could change (by a whole dollar). Given that there must
be a point of intersection for the two lines what are the possible values for
A?

g) Verify that your answer in part f is correct by choosing a particular value for A
and showing that there is a point of intersection. Justify the degree of
accuracy of your answer.
h)

Discuss whether the results make sense in the context of real life situation.
What would be a reasonable price for a day pass?
