programming movement of computer programming. The other major model, the spiral
model developed during the object oriented movement of software engineering makes no explicit
mention of a maintenance phase.
Basic software maintenance is divided into three. Which are Scan Disk, Defrag and Virus
Scan. Scan Disk is a simple but effective hardware utility that works at the basic, or DOS, level
of a PC-based computer system. Scan Disk is able to check the integrity of a disk drive and
correct many errors. It was acquired by Microsoft from Norton and is now bundled with its
popular DOS program. Scan Disk runs a scan over all sectors of the hard drive.
It checks every folder and file for errors, orphaned files and corrupt files. Because Scan
Disk is packaged in DOS, the error outside of Windows can be repaired if the operating system
crashes. Scan Disk also should be run on the computer about once every 3 months. Besides that,
it cant be used to repair a CD or DVD-ROM drive. A CD or DVD-ROM can only be erased or
written with burning software.
Below image (Figure 1.1) is an example of Windows Scan Disk while it is running within
Microsoft Windows. As can be seen in the below example, Scan Disk allows the user to select
which drive he wish to check for errors and then a simple status bar to indicate its overall
progress.
Figure 1.1
Next, the below image (Figure 1.2) is an example of what a Windows 98 computer or
later would display if the computer was improperly shut down. In this example Windows XP is
displaying a message that it'll being scanning the computer if a key is not pressed within seven
seconds.

Defrag or Defragmentation, also known as defragging, is a process that takes all the file
fragments scattered across a computer's hard drive and rejoins the multiple pieces of each file
into one area. In other words, after defragging your computer become smooth because it can
speed up your computer, save you time and extend the life of your hard drive. Defragging can be
a lengthy process, but it is an essential part of regular computer maintenance. Sometimes we
think of a computer storing files are enough large like a file cabinet. But files on a hard drive
exist more like a jigsaw puzzle because files are stored in pieces across the drive, then brought
together when the user needs the complete picture or data. As time passes and more files are
stored, it takes longer for the computer to find the pieces, and the computer's processes become
slow down.
By defrag program, it will checks the hard drive bit by bit, collecting the pieces of a file
and placing it in a new spot on the drive. It will also identify "lost" fragments, or pieces of a
deleted or damaged file that can't be rejoined. Furthermore, defragging can also identify errors on
the hard drive. After the defrag is done, the armature on your hard drive will travel less because
the files it looks for are all in one place.
Defragging should be done monthly, or even once or twice a year. Before defragging a
drive, we should uninstall unused or unneeded programs use the "Disk Cleanup" utility which
checks your hard drive for damage and major errors. We also must have a back up data before
starting any maintenance on our computer.
Figure 1.3
The above image (Figure 1.3) is an example of what Microsoft Windows Defrag may
look like, as can be seen this hard disk drive is seriously fragmented its show that each red
portion is fragmented files. In this example if the Defrag was allowed to be completed it's likely
the user would notice a significant improvement on performance.
Virus Scan is a procedure designed to identify and remove various types of threats
that download to computer hard drives. First developed is in the latter part of the 1980s,
the virus scan programs of today tend to identify a wide range of spyware and malware that is
picked up through email attachments as well as visits to various web sites. The main objective of
Virus Scan is to protect the computer hard drive and any files saved on the hard drive from
permanent damage.
Moreover, Virus Scan are beneficial in both work and home settings. Because of the
proliferation of various types of online security threats, it is not unusual for manufacturers of
laptop and desktop computers to include trial versions of highly regarded antivirus scan software.
Typically, the buyer can activate and use the software for a limited period of time to protect the
system from infection. Nowadays, most of these software packages will scan the entire hard
drive for threats, checking data files, program files and even computer registries for any foreign
code and program downloads.
Besides, there are many virus scan programs offer a free scan to interested consumers.
The online virus scan also available in the market nowadays will utilize a connection to the
Internet to remotely conduct a scan of the system hard drive. Upon completion, the
remote scan is published to the potential consumer along with the ability to purchase and
download the software to remove all the infections found on the hard drive.
In addition, virus scanner software is relatively inexpensive. Both single and multiple
user packages are available for customer, making it possible to protect computers in both home
and office environments.
Here are some example of Virus Scan that is very famous and popular today:

BitDefender
Kaspersky
Panda
