Preparation and uses of

(1) Malachite green
(2)Rosaniline
(3) Congo red
(4) Bismark brown
(5) Flrorescene.
MALACHITE GREEN :
1) Malachite green is an organic compound that is used as a dyestuff and has
emerged as a controversial agent in aquaculture. Malachite green is traditionally used as a
dye for materials such as silk, leather, and paper. Although called malachite green, the
compound is not related to the mineral malachite the name just comes from the
similarity of colour.
STRUCTURES AND PROPERTIES :
1) Malachite Green is a member of the triphenylcarbenium salts, classified in the
dyestuff industry as triarylmethane dyes.
2) Formally, Malachite Green refers to the chloride
salt [C6H5C(C6H4N(CH3)2)2]Cl, although the term Malachite Green is used loosely and
often just refers to the coloured cation.
PREPARATION :

Malachite green was first prepared by Fischer in 1877 by

condensing benzaldehyde and dimethylaniline in the molecular ratio 1:2 and
in the presence of a dehydrating agent .

USES :
1) Malachite green is traditionally used as a dye. Millions of kilograms of MG and
related triarylmethane dyes are produced annually for this purpose.
2) MG is active against the oomycete Saprolegnia, which infects fish eggs in

commercial aquaculture
3) It is also a very popular treatment against ichthyophthirius in
freshwater aquaria.

ROSANILINE :
(Pararosaniline)
1) Pararosaniline, Basic Red 9, or C.I. 42500 is a magenta dye having chemical
formula( C19H18N3Cl) .
2) It is one of the four components of basic fuchsine. (The others are
rosaniline, new fuchsine and magenta II.

CONGO RED :
1) Congo red is the sodium salt of 3,3'-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl)bis(4aminonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid)(formula: C32H22N6Na2O6S2 ; molecular weight :
696.66 g/mol). It is a secondary diazo dye. Congo red is water soluble, yielding a
red colloidal solution; its solubility is better in organic solvents such as ethanol.

2) It has a strong, though apparently non-covalent affinity to cellulose fibers.

However, the use of Congo red in the cellulose industries (cotton textile, wood
pulp & paper) has long been abandoned, primarily because of its toxicity and
tendency to run and change color when touched by sweaty fingers.
