Quantity Take Off


 Determining and noting the quantity of different materials in






construction is called quantity take off.


Quantities are taken off from drawings
It is required to understand drawings
Determine any missing dimensions in drawings
Read all the plans, elevations and sections and make sure that
their dimensions make sense in each view.
Order of taking off quantities should follow the sequence of
construction.

 PWD system (Long Walls and Short Walls)

 Usually quantities are measured to the two decimal places


 Measure the whole area first and then deduct for openings if

needed. Example
Area = (10 x 6) - (4 x2)

 PROVISIONAL QUANTITIES Some quantities are

provisional (they can not be accurately measured unless


performed). FOR EXAMPLE EXCAVATION.
 PRIME COST The total cost of labour, materials and
contractors profit that is charged from client.

Methods of Taking out Quantities


English Method (used by Military Engineering Services)
2. PWD Method (Used by Public Works Department) PWD
is a federal institution that
1. ENGLISH METHOD
 Dimension Paper: Dimensions are taken from drawings on
to Dimension Paper.
 It is a sheet divided in to two main sections, each section
with four columns as shown.

 Colum 1 is timesing column.


 Column 2 is called dimension column
 Column 3 is called squaring column = Col 1 x Col 2
 Column 4 is Description Column. Extreme right side of

column 4 is called Waste, used for side notes and calculations.


 Since English Methods is based on measurements in feet and
inches, dimensions are also taken in feet and inches on
drawings as well as on dimension paper.
 A DOT SEPARATES FEET AND INCHES AND SHOULD
NOT BE CONFUSED WITH DECIMAL POINT. (96=9.6)
