January 2015

Happy New Year to you all and welcome

back to Fortune School for Week 22 of
the 2014-2015 school year. I hope you
all have enjoyed the opportunity to rest
and rejuvenate during the winter holiday
break.
We are in middle of the 2nd Trimester
and have 37 days of instruction
remaining in this term.
As we kick off a new calendar year, this
is a great time to re-focus ourselves and
our scholars on learning and leadership
goals. Please help your scholar to set
and relentlessly pursue academic and
character goals for the next 37 days of
school until Spring Intersession. These
short-term goals should be connected to
the Big Goals we set at the beginning of
the school year.
Also, be sure to share words of
encouragement every day with your FS
teacher leaders, as well as with your
scholar.

Thursday-Formal Dress
Scholars will be sent home if
they are not in their dress
uniform.
*Khaki pants-white collar shirt-tie and
sweater*

Dr. MLK Jr. March January 19th

honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The
march will begin at Sacramento City College
at 8:30 AM and end at the Sacramento
Convention Center (near the State Capital)
at approximately 10:30 AM. Regional Transit
will be providing transportation from the
Convention Center back to SCC. Bring your
entire family for a fun filled morning. The
first 50 FS families in attendance will receive
an FS t-shirt as a token of appreciation for
their participation. Please wear Orange!
See you there!

The Nile Project is an unprecedented cross-cultural

musical collaboration featuring musicians from countries
along the Nile, all of whom rely on the common shared
resource of the river and its water, but who historically
have developed independently from one another. Together
for the first time they are now creating a new sound and
pan-Nile way of working together; the parallels between
the Nile and California with its system of shared water
rights, especially in this time of drought, promises to
make this a stimulating event that will generate new
understandings and dialogue.
The Nile Projects unique sound comes from intensive
musical residencies, gathering the musicians together for
weeks to learn from one another and translate that
experience into collectively composed new musical
works. A powerful pan-Nile percussion section drives this
orchestra of Ethiopian masenko and saxophone, Egyptian
ney, oud, violin, simsimiya, and tanbura, Ugandan
adungu, bass guitar, and six vocalists singing in 11
different languages.
