History
-US forces conquered Guantanamo Bay in the war between USA and Spain.
-At February 23rd 1903, a contract between the USA and Cuba was signed.
-Contract: Guantanamo Bay belongs to the USA for 99 years for a fee of
2000 dollars a year.
-Origanal purpose of Guantanamo: a base where the steam ships of the US
marine were maintained and repaired
-But after the second world war no more steam ships were build.
--> a normal military base of the US Army
-In 1934 the fee has been increased to 4000$.
-1959 Cuban Revolution -->new president of Cuba: Fidel Castro
-Castro didn't accept the fact that Guantanamo Bay belonged to the USA.
-USA refused and kept the base
-Original contract: it should only used as a millitary base
-but there is also a McDonalds and a bowling centre
-USA didn't pay the fees anymore
-->Cuba cut Guantanamo from the water and electric supply
This is one reason why Cuba and the USA are still politic enemies.
Now the base is supplied by Ships and Aircrafts.
A 28 kilometer long border fence was build because many Cubans wanted to get in the
US territory as refugees.

Murat Kurnaz
- Murat Kurnaz was 4 years in guantanamo
- He sat in Guantanamo without contact to the rest of the world, without a trial
and without an Indictment
- In the year 2001 Murat Kurnaz traveled to pakistan to get to know the koran
- In November 2001 the pakistani authorities arrested him and sent him to
afghanistan where the US soldiers took care about him
- Murat sent a postcard to his mother in which he told her that he was is
Afghanistan
- The next postcard was sent in 2002. Murat told his mother that he was now in
Guantanamo.
- The US authorities classified him as an enemy combatant
- He sat in Guantanamo not guilty
- German Investigators had doubts. They couldnt proove connections between
Mr.Kurnaz and terrorists
- Even the documents of the Command Information Task Force had no prooved
information for this
- In 2004 Kurnaz lawyer enforced visitor rights
- On January 31 , 2005 the judge Green released an Opinion in which she told
that Kurnaz is in no way an danger for the United States
- Kurnaz wasnt set free
- The Us court was against this decision
- On the 24th August 2006 Kurnaz was set free.
- He reported of tortures and other cruelities
