MVR System: Principle of MVR System

1. The MVR system compresses salt solution vapors to a higher pressure using a blower and transfers the heat from the compressed vapors to the solution in a heat exchanger, generating more vapors. 2. Key equipment includes a blower, concentration vessel, two heat exchangers, circulation pump, and feed and hold tanks. 3. The operating procedure involves preheating the solution, starting the blower when the solution reaches 104°C, maintaining temperatures and pressures, and concentrating the solution until it reaches 25% NaCl before transferring it for further concentration.

MVR system:

Principle of MVR system:

The Vapours evolved during the concentration of salt solution is compressed to
Higher pressure by using a positive displacement compressor and fed to the Heat exchanger (as a steam).
As the saturation temperature of compressed Vapour is higher than the boiling point of solution, heat flows
from Vapour to solution and more vapours are generated.
Equipment involved:
1.

Twin lobe blower (MOC:CS; Capacity: 3200 M3/hr).

2.

Concentration vessel (MOC:MS; Capacity: 19000 litre).

3.

Heat exchanger 1 ( MOC :MS ; Capacity: 120M2).

4.

Heat exchanger 2 ( MOC :MS ; Capacity: 200 M2).

5.

Circulation pump ( MOC: CS ; Capacity : 140M 3/hr).

6.

NaCl solution hold tank (MOC:MS ; Capacity: 20000 litres)

7.

NaCl solution Feed pump (MOC:MS; Capacity: 10M3/hr)

8.

Blower cooling (Oil circulation system, 0.5Hp).

Operating procedure:
1. Receive NaCl solution in the concentration vessel, circulate and sample for NaCl content and
specific gravity.
2. Add 250 grams of Sodium sulfide ( Na2S). This is added to reduce the corrosion rate.
3. Then start steam supply to the chest of the heat exchanger and raise the temperature of salt
solution by circulating it through heat exchanger using pump.
4. During the pre heating period keep the Concentration vessel vent open and keep the blower
suction and discharge line isolation valves closed.
5. When the NaCl solution temperature reaches 104C, stop the steam supply, circulation pump
and close the concentration vessel vent.
6. Then start the blower .
7. Before starting the blower check the following things,
1. Suction and discharge line isolation valves should be kept in fully open condition.
2. Oil circulation in blower jacket and sufficient qty. of oil in
Sump.
3. Trap pot in suction line to blower should be empty.
4. Pot in discharge line to blower should contain water (25% of its capacity).
5. Vent in Heat exchanger should be kept partially open.
6. Steam trap and bypass line isolation valves should be kept open.

8.

Close the heat exchanger vent line isolation valve once the blower current got stabilized. Also
adjust the steam trap bypass line isolation valve according to the discharge line pressure (not to
exceed 0.5kg/cm2) and the current load.
9. During the initial and mid stages of salt concentration maintain concentration vessel
temperature, ideally in between 102C to 104C.
10. Also maintain the steam temperature to the heat exchanger chest at 108C to 110C by
adding water in discharge line pot.
11. At the end of concentration stage of concentration (i.e. when the thermo siphoning stops and
suction line pr. Increases beyond 200mmHg) raise the reaction vessel temperature to 108C
and start circulation using and continue concentration till NaCl concentration reaches 25% or
above.
12. Stop the blower when the NaCl concentration is above 25% or the salt solution in the
concentration vessel is below level indicator. Then close the blower suction and discharge line
isolation valves and transfer the NaCl solution for further concentration in evaporation pond.

Check points:
a. Blower motor current should not exceed 120Amp
b. Oil circulation in blower jacket.
c. Steam temperature at the inlet to heat exchanger should not exceed 110C, apart from
the preheating period.
d. Concentration vessel temperature should be maintained at 102 to 104C during the initial
stages of concentration.
e. Blower suction and discharge line isolation valves should be kept at fully open condition.
f.

Heat exchanger vent isolation valve should be kept open during starting and stopping of
blower.

g. For getting maximum condensate recovery following things are to be taken care,
i. Suction and discharge line pressure should be maintained at 0.0Kg/cm2 and
0.5kg/cm2 respectively.
ii. Concentration vessel temperature should be maintained in such way that blower
suction line pressure should not drop below 0.0Kg/cm2.
iii. During the initial and mid stages of concentration, Inlet steam temperature
should go beyond 110C.
