Holiday is a very important event in every familys life. Parents spend their
working time to earn money so they eventually could go on a perfect vacation. But are all
of the places suitable for family vacation? A city people go should have activities for
every single person, a child, a teenager and an adult. Is Sydney, Australia is one of
those cities?

Australia is the worlds largest island - but smallest continent, it is also the only
continent that is considered as a single country. The oldest, largest and possibly the
most beautiful city in Australia is renowned for much more than its famous landmarks.
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia with
4.429 million habitants. (The World Factbook, n.d.) Sydney is a city of contrasts.
Beaches, lush national parks, the beautiful harbor and a modern cosmopolitan city are
all in close proximity. (Sydney Overview, n.d) More than a third of Australians live in New
South Wales, and Sydney is the nations largest city. As a visitor to Sydney you are
almost always looking for great beaches that are easy to get to. As well known children
really love beaches, they [beaches] are a heaven to them. They can build sandcastles,
dig holes in the sand, and find different kinds of shells; kids do know how to have fun.
And for parents relaxing on a chaise lounge on the beach near their children and, for
example, reading a book is truly a pure pleasure. Bondi Beach is considered as one of
Australia's most famous beaches and well known worldwide. Also it is a place where you
can learn how to surf. A person at any age can try himself at surfing, but obviously he
should be physically well prepared. Manly Beach is the perfect Sydney beach for the
whole family. There is sheltered swimming in a netted ocean pool, an aquarium filled
with creatures of the deep, great fish and chips and plenty of ice-cream shops. It is
another of Australias most popular suburban beaches along Sydneys long stretch of
northern coastline. Many of Australias champion surfers learned at Manly Beach. At its
southern end, a pathway curls from the Manly Surf Lifesaving Club to Shelley Beach that
is a popular track for joggers, cyclists and locals. Other popular activities include beach
volleyball, kayaking and scuba diving. It also has some lively music venues. (Manly
Beach, New South Wales, n.d.) That would be a great activity for the whole family after
dinnertime. Cycling is the best way to explore the beautiful coastal town of Manly with
Manly Bike Tours. With more than 20 kilometers of bike paths to discover, the kids can
1
take in a variety of wildlife, pass by marine reserves and sandy beaches at their own
pace or catch a ride on the back of your two-wheeler. (Tours for kids in Sydney, n.d.)
Sydney enjoys a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate all year round with more
than 340 sunny days per year. Summers are long, warm to hot and winters are short and

mild, with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year. In summer (December February), average maximum temperatures are around 26C. It can also be
humid at this time with an average humidity of 65 per cent. Average maximum
temperatures in the winter months (June-August) are around 16C. Sydneys rainfall is
highest between March and June. (Weather in Sydney, n.d.) That means families can
travel to Sydney all year round and enjoy a good weather and outdoor activities without
being afraid of getting stuck in a hotel, hiding from a bad weather.
There is wide availability of affordable family friendly hotels with interconnecting
rooms, which can be found on http://www.sydneyforkids.com.au/accomodation.cfm .
Good hotel locations make it easier to enjoy all the activities around the city like harbor
and beaches. For example, Vibe Hotel Sydney reflects a great family lifestyle: stylish
rooms, delicious food and locations, which provide the best family, escape that Sydney
has to offer. Hotel provides kids menu at Curve Restaurant, free meals in the Curve
Breakfast Buffet for children under ten years and making your own pancakes at
breakfast at the pancake machine will surely amuse a child for days. (Family Friendly
Features, n.d.) Apartment options can be found on
http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/nsw/sydney/sydney-city. Depending on
activities chosen it is better to find a nearest option to those [activities]. Somehow,
apartments may be considered as a better choice, as family will be in closest to their
usual atmosphere. Parents can cook by themselves food to which they are used to if
they dont want to try anything new.
On the other hand, families who would love to change their usual eating habits
can find something special. Australian cuisine offers various dishes from the homegrown
kangaroo to simple fish 'n' chips, some dishes are clichd, some are obvious, some may
surprise. Australia has the third largest fishing zone in the world. The clean waters
around the country provide abundant seafood for export and domestic consumption.
2
Fishing and aquaculture, which supplements the main ocean species of salmon, lobster,
prawns and tuna, are an important part of the country's agricultural industry. The iconic
image of Australian eating is that of a barbecue under sunny skies. Most homes have a
barbecue and they can also be found at beaches. Australians are one of the world's
biggest consumers of fast-food. As in most western countries, take-aways and fast food
reflect a wide range of cultures. There are a large number of Chinese, Indian and other

Asian restaurants in Australia's major cities offering take-away food. Australian fast food
restaurants serve hamburgers, fried chicken, kebabs and fish and chips. (Australian
Cuisine, n.d.)
If visiting Sydney in winter make sure to join a whale-watching cruise departing
from Circular Quay. To see a whale jumping out of the water on the videos is already
truly fascinating, and to see this scenery in front of you can cut your breath for some
time. Taking a Half Day Photo Safari with a professional photographer will be a great
opportunity to get the best pictures possible out in the open ocean. Your Photo Safari
cruise begins in Darling Harbour, Cockle Bay Marina at 2pm with a flexible return time
after the sun has set. (Half Day Photo Safari / Sunset Cruise, n.d.) Alive with activity day
and night, Darling Harbour is hugely popular especially with children. Visit the National
Maritime Museum and Chinese Gardens, take in a movie at the IMAX cinema, or
recharge at either Cockle Bay or King Street wharfs. Close by is the Powerhouse
Museum, in the district of Ultimo, and Sydneys bustling Chinatown. The youngsters will
also love Taronga Zoo even getting there on a short ferry ride from Circular Quay is
fun. There are koalas and kangaroos, a chimpanzee enclosure, regular bird- of-prey
flight displays, a nocturnal animal house, and sensational harbour views. Taronga Zoo is
home to thousands of exotic and native species including native animals such as
Kangaroos, Koalas, Tasmanian Devils, Platypus, Wombats, Wallabies, Quokkas, Emus
and Crocodiles. Exotic species include rare Western Lowland Gorillas, Sumatran Tigers,
Snow Leopards, Sun Bears, Chimpanzees, Giraffes, Zebras, Thai Asian Elephants.
(Taronga Zoo Mosman, n.d) Not a long time ago chimpanzee colony at Sydney's
Taronga Zoo has welcomed a new member. The chimp, believed to be male, was born in
October and is the second baby for proud mum Kuma. (New chimp for Sydney's Taronga
Zoo, 2013)
3
In conclusion, considering all sightseeing possibilities and activities traveling to
Australia with a family can be really a fascinating experience and no free time will be
wasted vainly. A chance to see this beautiful city, enjoy all of its attractions and activities
may not be given to everybody as of the large amount of money supposed to be spent
on the trip. In the end, Sydney may be a place, which is hard to reach, but when one

eventually will all the memories will last for a lifetime.
