Loan Management of Nabil Bank

CHAPTER - 1
1.1 INTRODUCTION
1..1.1 Definition of bank:The word bank is derived from Latin word Bancus
which refers to the Bench on which the bankers would keep its
money and his records, some person trace its origin to the French
word Banke and the Italian word Banco which means a Bench
keeping leading and exchanging of money or coins in the market
place by money lenders and money exchanges.
Generally, an institution established by law, which deals
with money and credit is called bank. It is obvious that in a common
sense, an institution involved in monetary transaction is called
bank .A bank simply carries out the word of exchanging money,
providing loan ,accepting deposit and transferring the money. A
person or a company carrying on the business of receiving money
and collecting draft for customers subject to the obligation of
honoring cheques drawn upon them from time to time by the
costumes to the extent of the amount available on their current
accounts.
It is very difficult to give definition to any particular
subject matter. It is really a difficult task to express and give
meaning of any subject in few words. So different scholars have
presented the definition or meaning of the same subject matter in
different ways, which are as follow:C. R. Crowther"A bank collects money from those
who have it to spare or who are saving it out of their incomes, and it
lends this money to those who require it."
Prof. Kinley"A bank is an establishment which
makes to individuals such advance of money as may be required
and safely made, and to which individuals entrust money when not
required by them for use."
The Commercial Bank Act 2031"A commercial bank is a bank, which
deals in exchanging currency, excepting deposits giving loans and
doing commercial transactions."
From the above definition we can understand the
following features of bank:1) It deals with money; it accepts deposit and advances loans.
2) It also deals with credit; it has the ability to create credit by
expanding its liabilities.
3) It is commercial institution; it aims at earning profit.
Therefore, a bank is an institution which accepts
deposit from the public and in turn advances loan by creating

- 1 --

credit .Therefore, it should be differentiated from other financial
institution as they can not create credit, though they accept deposit.
So we can say that any institution offering deposits subject to
withdrawal on demand and making loans of a commercial or
business nature is a bank.
1.1.2 Meaning of Commercial Bank:The commercial banks are those banks who pool
together the saving of the community and arrange for their
productive sue .They supply the financial needs of modern business
by various means. They accept deposit from the public on the
condition that they are repayable on demand or on short notice.
Commercial banks are restricted to invest their funds in corporate
securities. Their business is confined to financing the short term
needs of trade and industry such as working capital, financing. They
can not finance in fixed assets. They grant loans in the form of cash
credit and overdrafts. Apart from financing, they also render
services like collection of bills and cheque, safe keeping of
valuables, financing advising etc to their customers.
Section 2(a) of the Commercial Bank Act 2031(1974),
Commercial
bank means a bank which operates currency, exchanges
transaction, accepts deposit, provide loan; performs, dealing
relating to commerce except the banks which have been specified
for the co-operative, agricultural, industry of similar other specific
objectives.
Blacks Law Dictionary,
Commercial bank means a
bank authorized to receive both demand and time deposits, to
engage in trust services, to issue letter of credit, to rent time
deposit boxes and to provide similar services.
Hence the term commercial bank, Joint stock bank
and credit banks are frequently used interchangeably. For e.g. in the
context of English banking system the terms Joint stock banks and
commercial bank are Member banks. Now a day mean
commercial banks as distinguished from investment banks although
this distinction is often bussed in practice
In this way ,Commercial bank is different from Central
bank and the distinction between the two terms is essentially based
on their objects, while the primary objective of a commercial bank is
the maximization of profit, the central bank is primarily concerned
with the effects of its operation on the functioning of the
economy.Moreever, while their may certainty be many competing
commercial bank, their may central bank comes out it any ordinary
banking business for the general public in complete. It confines itself
mainly for controlling the operation of the banking system in a
country.

1.2 Problem of Study:-while keeping all the data I have to face

problem of new and improved data. But in my research up-to-date
data was not in my own place like in Internet and Bank offices.
1.3) Objective of study:Before doing something everybody must have
the knowledge about the objective of his study. If he has not made
objective or without objective the work is meaningless. objective is
the matter which motivate a man to spread his mind so there are
also some objective behind this study and selection of the topic
Loan management in banking sector we have many objective
about this topic like the meaning of bank, their position in Nepal,
meaning about loan, their rules and regulation, principle, criteria,
collateral and other many more. Although there are uncountable
objectives behind this study but the main objective of this study are
as follow:1) To have the practical knowledge about banking system.
2) To have knowledge about purpose of loan.
3) To know the management system of Nabil Bank.
4) To have in depth knowledge on Letter of Credit.
5) To have the knowledge to increase the goods of assets.
6) To asses the role of loan in development of nation.
1.4 Need of study:Today knowledge is the biggest assets and
valuable resource of mankind. Without knowledge, we are
handicapped in every share of our life. Knowledge which has been
accumulated over the centuries is the result of the continuous quest
of mankind to know more about themselves and about the ever
changing social phenomena and the environment which surrounds
them .The world; there is the repository of vast knowledge.
Knowledge can be acquired through various
sources. However research is the prime source of knowledge
generation. Research opens new frontiers of knowledge. It is
through research that new evidence is discovered, old evidence is
recorded, new facts are gathered and new insights are brought to
light .Research thus provides broader and deeper understanding of
phenomena.
We, the student of BBA 5th sem. need this study
by completing the research process to get the knowledge about the
related sector. Due to it we can understand about their sector, their

- 7 --

Loan Management of Nabil Bank

condition, their position, their environment, working style and also
helps to increase our mental ability. Due to this study we can also
get some practical experience related with that topic.
So far as the study of Loan Management of
Nabil Bank is concerned, First of I felt the need of Nabil Bank
because it is the first joint venture bank and it is one of the
developed bank of Nepal, its transaction is wide and transparent
and I felt the need of this study to know about banking position of
Nepal, their management system, loan and credit policy of Nepalese
bank, loan and credit policy of Nabil Bank, position of Nabil Bank
their process and many more. To know all about these things we
need this study.

1.5 ) Limitation of Study:Following are the limitation of study:a) The study is limited to Nabil Bank Ltd, Birgunj
b) The study focuses only the loan management of Nabil Bank Ltd.
c) Unavailability of sufficient data.
d) Data may contain error because all data we have used are
secondary in nature.

1.6.1 Meaning of Loan Management:The core function of commercial bank is the

granting of credit. Although banks offer a wide spectrum of financial
service, lending has traditionally been their main function. Banks
proffers experience, expertise and flexibility in lending which gives
them a clear competitive advantage over all other financial
institution. Bank credit has been responsible for the development
and growth of many small and moderate size business that
otherwise would have withered and died .By providing credit banks
have contributed to the growth of their respective communities and
the advance of local well being.
Apart form public services, bank lending is a
profitable activity .In fact, it is the most profitable activity of
commercial banking and hence the greatest contributor to bank
profit, on the other hand, lending is instrument in creating and
maintains good deposit relationship which is essential for the
furthering of bank lending. Banks provide loan to the needy
customer for the productive purposes against the security of patent

- 8 --

Loan Management of Nabil Bank

gold, solver and other fixed property. Sometimes, it can also give in
terms of overdraft for a maximum period of three month. The bank
charges interest on all forms of loan and interest rate charged by
the bank is set by the central office which keeps on changing upon
various factors. Bank provides loan for the business customer to
meet their working capital and long term requirement. Personal
customer takes loan against their fixed deposit and for consumer.
Small loan productive purpose is also given to personal customer.
The commercial banks are inspired with the
motive of gaining profit. To fulfill this objective they should widely
manage and improve its banking sector .They must pay much more
attention to the flow of loan .Regarding loan policy it should make
clear to its policy and view. In fact the bank should follow the credit
policy which would match the economic policy of Nepal Rastra bank
or country to gain more and more profit .Otherwise the bank cant
be success in its goal.
The main business of banking consists of providing
credit to manufacturers, traders engaged in inland business and
export and import business in the form of loan and credit. For
lending eyes and ears are important. For a purposeful and objective
lending for social and economic causes, the inward eye is most
important. Head alone was being considered important in old
methods of banking whereas heart is more important in the modern
social banking.
Critical appraisal is the critical examination of
various
available information
.Credit assessment is
the
determination of right amount of finance for the right man at right
point of time, nothing more and nothing more and nothing less
.Lending is an art in the sense that with the available information
.One has to take decision either in favor of or to decline a proposal
which depends upon the merits and demerits of case.
Hence the bank always should pay its attention
to make its investment wide and to lead the bank towards the way
of economic consolidation by creating the good environment to
recover the amount invested with the interest.

ones own experience and conviction. There can not be 100%
correct approach or solutions. Ultimate result is the indicator of good
or bad of loan approvals and from such experience that one has to
arrive at a proper credit policy. General Principals of sound credit
policy involve among other things to extend a most courteous and
sympathetic service to all eligible and deserving borrowers as a duty
cast on the banker. A banker has to follow a cautious policy and
conducts the business of lending on the basis of certain sound
principle. Principles of credit policy are really important to a bank.
These policy or principles are as follows:1) Principle of safety of fund
2) Principle of Liquidity
3) Principle of profitability
4) Principle of security
5) Principle of purpose of loan
6) Principle of National interest

- 11 --

Loan Management of Nabil Bank

1.6.4 Criteria for providing Loan:

A bank has to set some criteria for providing
loan. Person who come to a bank for the purpose of demanding
loan, the bank should not provide loan of random choice not by
examining and investigating. If a loan is provided without proper
investigation it will loss the principal and interest .There for the bank
always has to follow some criteria for providing loan. They are as
follow:1) Personal character
2) Capacity or Competency
3) Capital
4) Security
5) Credit information
6) External environment
1.6.5 Loan approval process:The bank approval process and working method
of a bank are really important .The person or business organization
come to borrow loan so a bank should know the process and
working method about it .Loan approval process depends upon the
types of security ,type of loan ,period of loan thought, it is approved
by the approving authority. But it is approved only after being
convinced that the loan will be repaid together with interest .There
are some steps to approve the loan by the bank. These steps are as
follow:1) Loan application
a) Name of the borrower
b) Legal status of the borrower
c) Address
d)Qualification
e)Experience
f)Purpose
g)Profitability
h)Security
i) Business worth
2) Interview
3) Inspection
4) Enquiries
1.6.6 Loan administration:The administrative frame work for carrying out the
lending function is an integral part of loan policy .In other words,
loan policy making extends to the establishment of an effective
lending organizational structure and adoption of the necessary
procedures for the proper execution of the lending function so that
the issue of the loan and advances moves smoothly to maximize the
benefits to the bank. Moreover, the top executives of bank must
determine the organizational structure of the lending function, set

- 12 --

Loan Management of Nabil Bank

procedure for the review of the loan application and identified the
steps to be taken when the borrower fails to meet contractual
responsibilities.
The lending administration is a long term
process. The administration of a particular loan ends when it is
recovered. But the process never ends until the bank exits.
Basically, we find the following functions as the part of loan
administration in a bank:1.6.7 Rules & Regulation of Loan Management:Following rules and regulation should be
implemented to manage the loan effectively:1) Asking for application and collectives
2) Conduct the interview
3) Credit analysis
4) To identify and investigate the personal character
5) To examine all things which are relating capacity for borrower
6) To examine the economic condition
7) It should not accept the proposal of loan from the proponent
8) Determination of depth structure
9) Forecast and risk rating system
10) Determination of written schedule
1.6.8 The management for providing Loan:The following functions fall under the
management for providing loan;1) Proposal for loan
2) Deed of loan
3) Securities
4) Granting loan on the basis of guarantee
5) Commitment deed
6) Contract of indemnity
7) Invoice

- 13 --

Loan Management of Nabil Bank

1.6.9 The management for loan recovery
After loan is provided, there is mechanism to
recover interest and the principal. It is very necessary to know all
the function wise methods, which are to be followed after the grant
of loan .The following processes, are continued until its interest and
principal is recovered.:1) Audit of credit
2) Recovery of interest on loan
3)) Hand over of securities
4) Process of recovering the date expired loan
5) Maintenance of data
1.6.10 Collateral
In assessing the collateral aspect of loan request,
the loan officer must examine whether the posses the adequate net
worth or own a sufficient amount of quality assets or other items of
value to provide adequate support for the loan .The loan officer is
particularly sensitive to such features as the age ,condition and
degree of specialization of the borrowers assets .The security is also
viewed own economic growth, such as consideration of
marketability, valuation and other economic consideration. The
validity and enforceability of the security is also considered
primarily.
The borrowers collateral should be accepted
to the bank since it is the ultimate assets from which the bank
recovers its loan by converting these assets into cash if the
borrower defaults in making payment of the loan. The full set of
documents submitted by the customer to cover a loan is loan as the
security documents. The loan can be secured in two ways- Collateral
security and Primary security.
1.7Researchmethology
1.7.1) Research Design:The research design is less descriptive but more
prescriptive because the historical secondary date has been mainly
employed for analysis. For the conceptual framework and literature
part more practically observed books are followed as for basic
knowledge about this report. For the analytical purpose, some
questions have been asked to the concerned personnel, who are
considered as primary data and the secondary data includes the
annual reports published by the banks, financial statements of the
bands by NRB, review material collected form the different
concerned magazines, newspapers, library etc. Such datas
information has been processed through various processes like
auditing, tabulating and result have been interpreted in the form of
ratio percentage and different types of diagrams for clear view.

- 14 --

Loan Management of Nabil Bank

Basically, this research design in prepared for the
student of Banking & Insurance practical fieldwork report of BBA 5 th
semester. Research can be done by the following ways;-

Conceptual framework

Preposition

Data analysis &

Interpretation

Hypothesis/
Research Question

Empirical
Observation

Data Collection Method

In the above figure, the researcher in the very

beginning of the task have developed the conceptual framework
which carries the theory and literature and in order to justify and
support the frame work some research question has been developed
by the researcher under hypothesis building, and to test the
hypothesis, the investigator collects the needed data monthly from
secondary and few from primary sources due to lack of time and
other reasons. After the data are collected then they are o be
analyzed and interpreted as well with due support from various
statistical tools such as pie-chart, bar diagram ,tables and so on
.After hypothesis building some imperial observation has been done
for the effective support which helps in the generation of proposition
(Reanimation & Suggestion to problem ) for testing the conceptual
framework.
In this ways research design is done by the researcher.

2.10 Analysis of Data
2.10.1 Trend Analysis:The statistical tool used in this study is least
squared method. This statistical tool is used to describe the trend of
any variable whether it increase or decrease with the passage of
time .This method of statistical mostly used by Manager, Engineer,
Doctor, Professor, Controller, Projector to forces the future value
based on time components. The time components are years,
months, seasons, weeks, quarters, days, hours, etc.
The formula for least square method is:
YC=a+bx
When, a=Y/N
b=xy/x2
Here YC is used to designate the trend value to
distinguish for the actual value a is the Y intercept or the computed
trend figure of the trend line or the amount of change in Y variable
that is associated with a change of one unit on X variable. The Y
variable represents the time.

Now,
Putting the value of a & b in tend equation time, i.e.
YC=a+bx
For 2063/64=9083.66+1596(-1) =7487.66
For 2064/65=9083.66+1596(0) =9083.66
