GRADUATE RESEARCH INTERNS 2015

What is Mitacs Globalink?

Would your research team benefit from the insight & perspective of an international student?
Would you like to introduce top-ranked international students to the Canadian research &
innovation landscape?
Are you interested in expanding your research network to countries like Brazil, China, India, Mexico,
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Vietnam?
Would you like the opportunity to evaluate potential graduate students in a hands-on lab setting
and access funding to help support them?

Mitacs Globalink offers Canadian faculty members in science, engineering, mathematics, humanities,
and social sciences the opportunity to work with exceptional senior undergraduate students from Brazil,
China, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Vietnam over a 12-week research project from May to
September 2015.

Provisions for Globalink Research Interns (GRIs)

With a fully-funded internship program, GRIs are provided the following supports by MITACS:
Reimbursement for plane tickets and work/study permits
Bi-monthly stipend for the duration of their internship
Full medical coverage
Accommodation and housing
Globalink Student Advisors (GSAs) mentor the GRI interns for the duration of their stay in Canada

Professional skills workshops


Meetings with professors, government representatives, and business leaders

Application Form

Faculty members may submit as many projects as desired. Fill in the online application form on this link
by June 18, 2014.
Mitacs Globalink Program will use the information provided in the application form to facilitate
matching with the most appropriate student. It will be made available to the public online for viewing by
potential Globalink students and other interested parties:

Matching Process and Selection

Upon assessment of scientific merit and program applicability, projects submitted by professors will
be made available into an online database to be viewed by students during their application period.
The Mitacs Science and Technology team scores each student application based on criteria
including, but not limited to, GPA, university, and research experience, and ranks students based on
their score.
A list of possible matches is generated by combining the lists of professors submitted by all students.
Each match is weighted based on the students score and ranking. Please note that approved
projects are student-driven. If a professors prospective project is not selected for consideration by a
student during the application process, it will not be assigned a Globalink Research Intern.

Important Dates
April to June 2014

Canadian professors submit research projects to Mitacs. All accepted


projects are made available to student applicants in an online database.
Professor project proposals are due June 18, 2014 for Globalink 2015.

July to September 2014

International students submit applications and select research projects


from the online database. Students must select a minimum of 3 and a
maximum of 7 research projects from the online database.

October to December 2014

Mitacs provides Canadian professors with proposed student participants


for their project, including application details, statement of research
interests, CV, and transcripts. Professors then choose to contact or
interview the suggested students and ultimately inform Mitacs of their
decision to accept or decline a proposed student.

January to April 2015

Mitacs announces the result of the matching process to the UMs Office
of International Relations (OIR), professors and students. Professors and
their accepted student(s) arrange pre-project details while Mitacs
oversees logistics.

May to September 2015

Globalink Research Interns arrive in Canada and work with supervising


professors for 12 weeks on the research project

Roles and Responsibilities of the Supervisor

Host professors must ensure the following is in place for their Globalink Research Intern prior to the
start of the internship (as required):
UM invitation letters for visa application process (template attached). Letters to be copied to OIR
and Mitacs when sent to GRIs
Research supervision
E-mail and internet access
Lab and/or office space
Software or hardware
Any safety or orientation information required for the project

GRIs are expected to work 40 hours per week on their research project. During the duration of the
project, GRIs may be invited to attend industry and/or government relations events, professional
skills training workshops, or conferences. Supervising professors will be notified of their interns
potential absences as far in advance as possible, and every attempt will be made to schedule these
events outside of working hours.
