An artist might rely on any
number of stimuli to direct

his creative process. In my
case, the medium of transparent watercolor is that
stimulus. The fluidity of
the suspended color and its
active attraction to the paper
is a dynamic field of energy
that pulls the work through
the hand of the artist. Attention to the inherent properties of these materials is key
to allowing the medium to
assist with the act of painting a watercolor.

beautiful scenery in the world. This experience, more than anything, cemented his lifelong love for landscapes, the outdoors, and the
West. After receiving the Artist Award at his High School graduation for most outstanding artist, Steve went on to Miami University
where he focused on a business degree. Yet while studying business, he was still able to squeeze in seven semesters of ceramics
to continue to live out his passion for all things artistic! Always learning, Steve regularly takes classes at the Indianapolis Art Center
and has painted under the tutelage of many well known Indiana artists. Steve now resides in Carmel, Indiana with his wife and three
children. His inspiration and passion for painting comes from his lifelong experiences in the outdoors, his family, and his faith. I feel
Gods pleasure when I paint, says Steve. As the verse from Exodus shows, God is able to inspire the work He sets before us. Its an

Biography
If asked, Jerry would say that he has been a doodler all his life. In 2006, after retirement from Indiana University, he enrolled in his first watercolor course and has never de-enrolled. He loves the
Bloomington Watercolor Society: the camaraderie, the monthly meetings, the sponsored workshops,
and the opportunity to learn from and with others. Dr. Harste holds the rank of Distinguished Professor
at Indiana University. As a professor, now Emeritus, of the Department of Culture, Literacy, and Language Education, Jerry continues to be an advocate for arts-based education and an expanded view
of what it means to be literate in the 21st century. Dr. Harste is the co-author of several professional
books on literacy learning as well as several picture books, including It Didnt Frighten Me! (Powell &
Harste, 1980). Jerry continues to do research, speak in public, and conduct art-based workshops for
teachers in the United States and Canada. His water media art has been juried into several national and international competitions. Jerry is a member of the Indiana Watercolor Society, the Hoosier
Salon, and holds Signature Member status in the Bloomington Watercolor Society and the Missouri
Watercolor Society. As a child advocate and an expert in literacy and literacy learning his advice to
parents is that if they want their children to read, give then a crayon and let them draw; if they want
their children to write give them a picture book to let them read. Supporting children as artists is easy:
Make sure there is paper and crayons constantly about and in childrens way.

My paintings are inspired by the realistic beauty of the natural world as well as the emotion of color. Through symbolism I hope to communicate with the viewer a message of
celebration for the world we live in. Through abstraction I enjoy pushing the boundaries
of realism to create images that are closer to the sub-conscious than reality. My work
is very much inspired by the work of the Contemporary Impressionist and Symbolist
movements. It is my intention for each painting to share a moment in time or place as
I experience it. I greatly enjoy plein air outdoor painting because it enables me to more
fully experience a space. It is my goal to share with the viewer an appreciation for the
graceful beauty of nature.

Artist Statement
Ive spent nearly 30 years as a photojournalist: in the US Navy,
freelancing and newspaper work, and this has provided me
the medium and the time to develop a keen insight into composition, an eye for the truth and a penchant for uncovering
the hidden details in a story. My paintings have been recently
featured at the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art; Artlink of Ft. Wayne;
the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, OR; the National Museum
of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL; and the Air & Space Museum in San Diego, CA. I am a member of the American Society
of Marine Artists. There is more than one way to tell the story in
art. Over time, I found I wanted to portray these stories beyond the soul-bearing detail of photography and express them
through the flow, the quiet elegance and dignity of oil. The
stories of journeys, ancient days and just yesterday, spill into
the canvas to invite you on your own journey.
Biography
Samuel Hoffman enjoyed a 10-year adventure as a Photographers Mate in the US Navy before returning to Indiana to
complete a photojournalism degree at Indiana University.
Since 1990, his day job is as a staff photographer at a Midwestern paper, but since 2004, he has been capturing his
memories of the sea and his wanderings on canvas. His paintings have been recently featured at the Ft. Wayne Museum of
Art; Artlink of Ft. Wayne; the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay,
OR; the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL;
and the Air & Space Museum in San Diego, CA. He is a member of the American Society of Marine Artists.

I paint for my own joy and pleasure. So I paint to create beautiful images and
I hope others share my perceptions. Portraiture, animals and nature settings
are a specialty and when I can I like to have a story told through the image.
Lois Davis inspired me when I took a class from her about thirty years ago,
while I was still China painting. I then took classes in watercolor for about
twenty years, until moving to Urbana, Illinois to be near my grandchildren.

Ruth has been a daughter, wife,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, but most of all, she is an ARTIST. Ruth feels she has been given a
gift by God to be able to paint bright
colorful paintings. She paints to bring
joy to herself and to share with others
her unique view of her world.
Ruth paints mostly with watercolors,
she just cannot resist the way the
colors have a life of their own, mixing
and resisting each other on the paper, creating a glow that just cannot
be found with other mediums. She
enjoys painting abstract paintings,
finding inspiration in the shapes that
form when she drops colors on the
paper, then finding a painting out
of random shapes. She particularly
enjoys designing geometric compositions, using circles in particular. She believes that is because a
circle is a continuing line, line being
an important part of a composition,
that continuing line symbolizes life
encompassing all aspects of her life.
Life, having a husband and a family,
losing her husband and her daughter
to cancer, circling back to the family
and friends that surround her now,
circling around her art completes her
life in a way she would not have if it
werent for her art. So, she paints,

My art education has been a life-long passion. As a child, I was always experimenting with unconventional materials. Today my playfulness is a bit more focused and refined. Since retiring as an elementary art teacher in June 2008, I have concentrated on creating
a portfolio of my original intaglio and relief limited edition art prints. I now teach printmaking and work with a cadre of accomplished
printmakers at the Indianapolis Art Center. I am also artist-in-residence at Robin Run Village, Indianapolis where I work with a group
of talented seniors. Mentors have played a huge role in my own fulfillment and success, passing on skills and providing me with new
opportunities for exploration. I was trained as a metal smith in the 1970s under the tutelage of Alma Eikerman, Distinctive Professor
of Metalsmithing at IU, Bloomington. Eikerman instilled in me a ferocious dedication to the skills of masterful craftsmanship based
on a solid understanding of design principles. I participate in many local, regional & national juried exhibitions and work as a free-lance
curator. My 2011 etching, Field & Stream, was a 2013 Delta National Small Print Exhibition purchase prizewinner and is a part of the
Arkansas State University Art Museum permanent collection. I am a member of the Indiana Hoosier Salon, Indiana Artists Club, Indianapolis Museum of Art Print Study Group, Indianapolis Art Center, Eiteljorg Museum Guides, Dayton Printmakers Co-op, Mid- America
Print Council and Southern Graphics Council International. In February 2014, I held a solo show at the Ivy Tech Waldron Arts Center at
Bloomington, Indiana. I am just now exploring the artistic possibilities and professional opportunities that I dreamt about years ago.

One big problem in approaching an exhibit like this is to try to limit the number of my paintings to be shown. A daunting task. Ive tried
to pick something of interest from my travels throughout the world. But there are many more works still waiting to be shown. Oh,
well, at least one can get an idea of my approach in trying to capture the moment on canvas in various exotic places. These works are
all acrylic on canvas. I paint ferociously fast, and that medium lends itself to my pace. If I had to wait for oils to dry, I probably would
be worn out pacing back and forth! When on site, I often do ink and watercolor drawings to get something down on paper. I also snap
away with my Sony camera to help my senior memory with the details of a scene after I return home. One common theme in my
works is brightness, color, movement and optimism. I want the viewer to be uplifted by my works and not come away from the exhibit
saying, What in the world was that all about?

Twilight in the Bog / watercolor
Biography
Kaldahl is a nationally known artist, composer, lecturer and award winning vocalist
and pianist. Part of a family lineage deeply rooted in the arts, she too found her
artistic passions and completely immersed herself. She studied classical piano with
a Doctor of Music from the Music Conservatory of Chicago. By the age of 13, her
piano studies were complete, including instruction on both the organ and clarinet as
well, and she had already received several piano, vocal and clarinet awards. It was
during this time that she also began composing her own music and writing poetry.
It wasnt until her late twenties that she was able to completely focus on painting.
She received private oil and watercolor instruction and took workshops from some
of the most highly respected artists in the country. Honoring her fathers artistic lineage by combining his innovative faux painting techniques with her unique flair, she
created a style that is fresh and exclusive. Her art has been featured in numerous
exhibitions, collaborations, featured artist events, juried shows and art fairs.

Josephine Keenan
Josephine Keenan, a retired actress in theatre, film and television, a director in theatre, and currently a writer of young adult books, did her first oil painting when she
was 24. She loved the ocean and in the beginning she focused her art on seascapes
and capturing the power of waves breaking on sandy beaches. Busy with marriage
and career, Josephine laid aside her brushes until 2005, when she was captivated
by a Frank Schoonover painting in the Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY. Something
about the magnificent painting inspired her to once again begin working with oil
paints. Seeing her work, friends urged her to pursue painting as something more
than a relaxing hobby. She enrolled at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, attended workshops with local groups, and studied with Tina Tammaro, a Cincinnati-based artist
whose work is often shown in local galleries. Josephine finds painting to be another
medium with which to express herself through storytelling. Josephine and hubby
Frank have a home in Cross Plains, Indiana, which was originally a hewn log house
dating back to 1845.

Biography
Art, in one manner or another, has been an important part of my life since childhood. As a boy I loved
to draw, in high school I took all of the art classes I
could, and while in college I realized that teaching art
was my destiny. For the past 30 years I have been
teaching high school art, and to this day I still love
watching students develop their skills and passions
within the world of art.
Watercolor has always been something that I enjoyed, but in 1997 I took a painting workshop that
completely changed my views and passion for this
wonderfully spontaneous medium. Since that time I
have been painting seriously with a focus on still life
and portraits. My style is somewhat different than
traditional watercolor painting. I still use the time
proven techniques of multiple washes, wet on wet,
wet on dry, glazing, and so forth, but I use these
techniques in a very tightly controlled manner. I like
to think of it as controlled spontaneity.
Its exciting for me to see watercolor, a fluid medium, used in a realistic manner. Whether an artist is
working in oils, acrylics, graphite, charcoal, colored
pencil, watercolor, or anything in between it takes a
special commitment and dedication to work in this
style. Realism has withstood the test of time. As
other styles come and go realism continues to reassert itself over and over.

Biography
For as long as I can remember, Ive always dreamed of becoming an
artist. My appreciation for beauty within nature came naturally having
been born and raised on a farm. From childhood, I was continually
surrounded by the subtle beauty of Indianas rural landscape and have
often felt Gods presence within the serenity and grandness of nature.
From an early age, I began to feel I was blessed with a God-given talent for the arts which continue to fuel my artistic and inward journey.
In 1975, my first oil painting was influenced by Steve Swagerle: my
high school teacher, who was living in one of the houses on our farm. I
was so inspired when I walked into his home to find every room filled
with oil paintings stacked three and four deep. It was then that I knew I
wanted to paint with oils.
I began to work from photographs rendering realistic works, and for a
short while I studied drawing and design at Purdue University before
the duties of life called me away. I never abandoned my dreams of
being an artist and I continued to develop my skills both technically and
from within. It was not until I studied under the award winning artist
Hilary Eddy, that my artistic journey took me on a new path of self-exploration. Instead of earth tones, which I now refer to as my umber
days, my painting started to explode with color. I was later influenced
at a T.C. Steele Historical site paint out, where I discovered the joy of
painting en plein aire. I was transported with the freedom discovered
by painting nature in the open landscape. That freedom of painting outdoors also began to liberate my brushmy strokes became more fluid
interpretations of light and shadow. My paintings are now impressionistic and full of movement and color.
Art is continual learning. I believe I have learned more from teaching
painting than my students have learned from me. I also give credit to
all of the artists with whom I have worked and shared the experience
of interpreting the many beautiful landscapes of Indiana. As an artist,
I look forward to painting more and learning more. I am on an artistic
journey and gladly follow the path that illuminated my dreams as a
young boy. Follow and keep your dreams because dreams can come
true.

Learning to paint has been a life-long pursuit for me, but learning how to paint professionally has taken on greater urgency
in recent years; since my semi-retirement, Ive begun to focus

Putting down the brush and picking up the palette knife seems

exquisite use of color. When I first saw a painting
by Matisse, it was at the Art Institute of

of strong colors during his association with an

that Matisses cutouts too decorative and flat.
I knew that I wanted to use their bold colors in

I tell stories. I design, and I craft things carefully.
I love a good challenge, and am engaged by the work of others who love to confront difficult problems too. I find little sustenance in
art that is either based on a single clever idea or that doesnt require much of a skill set. If the work cant be described by a line like I

I paint visual poems of what I see
by arranging shapes and color rhythmically in space. While my paintings
represent reality, they are more
about the putting together of artistic
elements than about the actual subject matter.
