WELCOME TO CONGRESS

March 2015
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Welcome to the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress 2015! I am happy
you have chosen to join us to take this opportunity to know Jesus better, and to
grow in your faith.
The theme for this years Congress, SEE, is taken from the beautiful story in
St. Johns Gospel about the blind man who is healed and also receives the gift
of faith.
Pope Francis, speaking of this passage, says it is the story of our lives, too. We
too, he says, must open ourselves to the light of Christ in order to bear fruit
in our lives ... so that, as St. Paul reminds us, we may act as children of light,
with humility, patience and mercy.
This year, we must also take a moment to recognize the many years of service
that Sr. Edith Prendergast, R.S.C. has given to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
and to the Religious Education Congress. It will be hard for all of us to see her
go, but Id like to thank her for her generosity and dedication over the years,
and to wish her well in whatever the Lord has prepared for her in the future.
I pray that your participation in these days of formation, fellowship, prayer,
and worship will deepen your understanding of our Catholic faith and enrich
your relationship with Jesus Christ, so that He may be always the center of
your lives and ministry.
I entrust our time together to the Blessed Virgin Mary and ask God to bless
you abundantly throughout this weekend.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
WELCOME
General Info
WELCOME
Dear Friends,
Once again it is my privilege and joy to extend to you a heartfelt welcome to Congress 2015.
Each year you bless us with your presence, your enthusiasm and your ongoing commitment to
share the Good News of our rich Catholic story and traditions.
The theme chosen for Congress 2015 See inspired by the blind mans extraordinary
encounter with Jesus (John 9:1-41) challenges us to See anew, to peer beneath the surface and
see more deeply and broadly. We are invited to open wide not only our physical eyes, but also
the eyes of the heart, the eyes of our memory and perceive Gods presence in all of life, in joy,
in pain, in struggle.
As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious
Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling
15 students to pursue a masters degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2014
Congress Saturday night liturgies together with registration contributions added $50,256 to this
fund. We thank for your ongoing generosity.
The amazing and ever-growing variety of workshops, liturgies, entertainment opportunities
and resources provided throughout the weekend are wells of enrichment and spiritual growth
for you and for your communities of faith. Come and be inspired, stretched and renewed by the
wisdom and the insights shared by national and international speakers.
In the midst of the many activities offered, there is also opportunity to spend time in the quiet
atmosphere of Sacred Space, walk the Labyrinth, linger at the Art Exhibit area and avail of the
sacrament of reconciliation.
It has been a great privilege and blessing for me to direct Congress with the support of great
staff and volunteers for the past 27 years. As I prepare to retire and take time for sabbatical, I
want to express my deepest gratitude to each of you for your remarkable dedication, faithful
support and your passion to bring the vision of the gospel into every sector of the human race.
You will always be in my thoughts and prayer as I cherish great memories of this marvelous
gathering.
Again, I thank you for your openness to the life-changing light of Christ and I look forward to
greeting you at Congress 2015.
Sincerely,
CONGRESS SPOTLIGHT

Verse 1 Through the mountains, through the prairies, Wakan Tanka, speak to me.
Through the dry lands, through the rolling hills, Wakan Tanka, speak to me.
In the gliding of the eagle, Wakan Tanka, speak to me.
When the wolf cries in the howling wind, Wakan Tanka, speak to me.

Boundless love was promised as your vow, a promise from ancient time,
that your love would be mine. Before the mountains were designed,
before the heavens were aligned, your sweet voice awakened my name.
You found me in my shame, and called me out of my pain.
Boundless love embraces day and night. This grace I cant comprehend,
a love that has no end. When storms arise you are near,
when danger comes, who shall fear? You enfold me in your embrace.
The vision of your face, no dream could ever replace.
Boundless love, receive my humble life, receive my soul all my days,
that I may know your ways. My song shall travel near and far,
to claim the beauty that you are; words of truth and love are sown;
that you, most high, alone, are source and cornerstone.

ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS
The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the ongoing
training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for Directors of
Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers to pursue graduate studies. It is our hope that
every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given the opportunity to receive a masters
degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies.
Those who registered online could contribute to this Fund, as well as those who made an additional contribution through
mail-in registrations. As of February 1, 623 people responded with contributions totaling $9,052. We sincerely appreciate
and acknowledge their contributions. Because of thoughtful contributions year after year, we have passed the $1 million
mark, and are currently enabled to offer financial assistance to 15 lay ministers involved in Parish Catechetical Ministry
and related areas in Youth, Young Adult and Adult Formation.
