Initially, I did not intend to completely stop my project immediately before and during my exam period, like I ended up doing. I had planned to do some, albeit
much less, research and reading during this time, as well as keep my project log up-to-date. In fact, I massively underestimated the impact of the intense
revision and exam preparation that was needed for my AS exams. Ultimately, the Extended Project Qualification is less important to me than my AS-levels;
compromised AS grades have a much larger negative effect on my university applications than a compromised EPQ grade. Considering this, overall, I spent the
same amount of time on my project as I had originally intended.
Gantt Chart
The chart shows that my project started off well, with the planning and proposal elements finishing on time or ahead of schedule. The exam break then caused
my research to finish over a month late, which had a knock-on effect on everything else, pushing it back. This caused me to rush the writing of a short draft of
my project to meet the deadline, although I dont think this had any negative effect on its quality, as I felt the time I spent on it was sufficient.
Also, the fact that I had to complete my A2 Maths coursework during the months of June and July was another factor affecting the time taken for research and
recording researched information.
I had planned to write my project during the massive amount of free time I thought I would have had during the college-free summer break. This didnt
happen, firstly because the collating of information wasnt yet finished (I couldnt begin writing without this being fully completed), and also because of an
extremely unproductive summer due to it being much busier than I had expected. The combination of nice weather, the distraction of the internet and general
laziness produced a lot of procrastination.
I didnt finish recording all of my information until a couple of days before restarting college. This caused the final weeks of my project from the beginning of
September to the 10th October deadline date to be very intense indeed. However, the fact that I had been very thorough and clear in the OneNote document
in which all my information was collated made it possible to complete the writing of my report in less than three days.
The evaluation of my sources was quite a large job that took a lot of time. I had to dedicate a week specifically for this because I decided not to evaluate each
source as I went along and also, I put priority on recording all of my information as quickly as possible after I collected the last source (in hindsight, I think
this was a good decision).
The presentation element was also quite rushed, although producing it took much less time than I thought it would.
The final week was used for putting the finishing touches (proof-reading, format-checking) on all the documents I would submit, printing these off, and
completing the final couple of elements of the production log.
Although the final few weeks felt quite rushed, I dont think this had any negative impact on the quality of any elements within my project. As a whole, time
management during my project was very good in that I met all deadlines and time was not a limiting factor of my projects quality. However, there was a very
big difference between the planned schedule, and the actual timings. This was due mainly to external factors, as opposed to just not following the planned
schedule.
